To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Crowan in the County of and also to John the younger Poor’s Rate Collector of the said parish –

This is to give you and each of you Notice that we the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Wendron in the said County do intend to make application to Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace assembled at the Guildhall in the Borough of in the said County at 10 O’Clock in the forenoon of Saturday the 31st day of July instant for an Order to remove Susanna Jenkin Widow and her five Children from our said parish of Wendron to your said parish of Crowan AND we hereby further give you and each of you Notice that you or some one of you produce and shew forth to the said Justices on the hearing of such application the Book or Books in which all the rates made for the relief of the Poor of your said parish from the year 1841 to the year 1847 both inclusive are entered and contained

COUNTY OF CORNWALL The Board of Guardians of the Poor of the Helston Union, do hereby HELSTON UNION certify that on the third day of July 1847 Susanna Jenkin the Widow of James Jenkin deceased and Susan about eleven Jane about five John about four and James about two years of age and Thomas aged about three months her Children by her said Husband became chargeable to the Parish of Wendron in the said Union, and are now actually chargeable to and in receipt of relief from the said Parish of Wendron

In testimony whereof, the Common Seal of the said Guardians is hereunto affixed at a Meeting of their Board, this 31st day of July 1847

31st July 1847 Examination of Susanna Jenkin (Wendron‐Crowan, re Susanna Jenkin & children)

County The Examination of Susanna Jenkin of the Parish of Wendron in the County of of Cornwall Cornwall Widow taken upon Oath at Helston in the said County before us The to wit Reverend John Rogers and the Reverend William Thomas two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, of, in, and for the said County, this thirty first day of July in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven touching the place of the last legal settlement of the said Susanna Jenkin and her five Children and also taken upon the complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Wendron unto us the said Justices, at Helston aforesaid, this day made that the said Susanna Jenkin Widow of James Jenkin deceased and Susan about eleven, Jane about five, John about four, and James about years of age, and Thomas aged about three months her children by her said deceased Husband have not, nor has either of them, resided in the said Parish of Wendron for five years next preceding this day, or the making of this application for an Order or Warrant for their removal therefrom, but have lately come to inhabit and are now inhabiting in the said Parish of Wendron not having gained a legal settlement therein, nor having produced any Certificate acknowledging them to be settled elsewhere, and that on the third day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty seven the said Susanna Jenkin and her said five Children became chargeable to and from thence hitherto have been and now are actually chargeable to the said Parish of Wendron and now are receiving relief therefrom but which relief was not made necessary by sickness or accident

The said Susanna Jenkin for herself saith as follows. I am the Widow of James Jenkin deceased. I was lawfully married to my said deceased Husband in the parish Church of Wendron in this County thirteen years ago next November since which Marriage I have had by him five Children namely Susan now about eleven, Jane now about five, John now about four and James now about two years of age and Thomas now about three months old, my said Husband died in the parish of Crowan in this County about six months since, we had lived in that parish several years previous to his death, I came first to reside in the said parish of Wendron with my Children about four months since, I am now with my said Children residing in and chargeable to and in receipt of Parochial relief from the said parish of Wendron but did not so become chargeable in respect of relief made necessary by sickness or accident. At Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and forty two my said deceased Husband took to rent of Mr Benedict Common who now resides in the said parish of Crowan a small tenement situate at Bolitho in the said parish of Crowan at the yearly rent of Fifteen pounds, that tenement consisted of a separate and distinct dwelling House and seven acres of tillable land and several acres of Croft Ground, my said Husband was Tenant of and resided on that tenement and had the sole occupation thereof as such Tenant under such yearly hiring from Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and forty two to Christmas one thousand eight hundred and forty six and paid the full rent annually for the same during the whole of such Tenancy and during such Tenancy my said Husband was assessed to and paid the Poors Rates charged on and payable out of the said tenement, for the last year’s tenancy namely from Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and forty‐five to Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and forty six I paid the said Benedict Common for my said Husband the sum of Fourteen pounds and I paid all Poors rates payable for the said Tenement during that year, my said Husband never afterwards did any act to gain a Settlement in his own right. I have done no act to gain a Settlement since his death.

The said John Perry for himself saith as follows. I am an Assistant Overseer of the Poor of the said parish of Wendron, the said parish of Wendron is within and part of the Helston Union in this County. I now produce a Certificate of the actual Chargeability of the said Susanna Jenkin the Pauper now here present and her said five children to the said parish of Wendron which Certificate is hereto annexed and marked ‘A’. I also produce a Notice signed by the Churchwardens and Overseers of Wendron aforesaid addressed to Mr John Trevenen Rate Collector and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the parish of Crowan in this County and calling on them or some or one of them to produce here this day on the hearing of this application all the Books in which the rates made for the relief of the Poor of the said parish of Crowan from the year 1841 to 1847 are entered and contained and which Notice is hereto annexed and marked ‘B’. I served a Duplicate of such Notice on the said John Trevenen and also on the Overseers of Crowan aforesaid on the twenty ninth day of July instant and which Books are not now produced although the said John Trevenen and the said Overseers are now here present and have been called on so to do, and that they stated that they now have the said Books in their possession

Cornwall THE COMPLAINT of Bennet Johns to wit one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Wendron in the said County of Cornwall, made on behalf of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Wendron and with their assent, unto us The Reverend John Rogers and the Reverend William Thomas two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, at Helston in the said County, this thirty first day of July in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty seven who saith: That Susanna Jenkin Widow of James Jenkin deceased and Susan about 11, Jane about 5, John about 4 and James about 2 years of age, and Thomas aged about 3 months, her children by her said deceased Husband have not nor has either of them resided in the said parish of Wendron for five years next preceding this day or the making of this application for an order for their removal therefrom but have lately come to inhabit and are now inhabiting in the said Parish of Wendron endeavouring to settle there contrary to Law, not having gained a legal Settlement there, nor having produced any Certificate acknowledging them to be settled elsewhere, and that on the third day of July in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty seven the said Susanna Jenkin and her said five Children became chargeable to, and from thence hitherto have been relieved, and are now receiving Relief from the said Parish of Wendron but which relief was not made necessary by sickness or accident and he therefore prays that the said Susanna Jenkin may be duly Examined as to the Place of her Legal Settlement, and be further dealt with according to Law.

Parish of Wendron in the County of Cornwall

To the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Crowan in the County of Cornwall TAKE NOTICE, That the above‐named Susanna Jenkin now residing at in this Parish of Wendron has with Susan about eleven, Jane about five, John about four and James about two years of age, and Thomas aged about three months her Children by James Jenkin her deceased Husband become and now is chargeable to the said Parish of Wendron and is now receiving Relief from the said Parish of Wendron and that an Order of Justices has been obtained for their Removal to your Parish of Crowan as their last place of legal Settlement (a duplicate of which Order, and Copies of the Examinations on which the same was made are herewith sent). AND TAKE NOTICE, That unless Notice of Appeal against the said Order be received by us within Twenty‐one Days from the sending hereof, the said Paupers will be removed to your said Parish of Crowan in pursuance of the said Order. DATED this second day of August on the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty seven

31st July 1847 Removal Order Wendron to Crowan (Susanna Jenkin & children)

County of To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Wendron in the Cornwall County of Cornwall, and to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the To Wit Parish of Crowan in the County of Cornwall and to each and every of them

UPON the Complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Wendron in the County of Cornwall made this day at Helston in the said County unto us The Reverend John Rogers and The Reverend William Thomas whose Names are hereunto set and seals affixed, being Two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, of and for the said County of Cornwall and one of us of the Quorum, that Susanna Jenkin Widow of James Jenkin deceased and Susan about eleven Jane about five John about four and James about two years of age and Thomas aged about three months her Children by her said deceased Husband have not nor has either of them resided in the said parish of Wendron for five years next preceding this day or the making of this application for this Order but have come to and now do inhabit in the said Parish of Wendron in the said County not having gained a legal settlement there, nor produced any certificate owning them to be settled elsewhere, and that on the third day of July last past the said Susanna Jenkin and her said five children became chargeable to and from thence hitherto have been relieved and are now actually chargeable to and in receipt of relief from the said Parish of Wendron in the said County of Cornwall and that such relief was not made necessary by sickness or accident We the said Justices, upon due proof thereof, as well upon the examination of the said Susanna Jenkin and John Perry upon oath, as otherwise, and likewise upon due consideration had of the premises, do adjudge the same to be true; and we do adjudge that the lawful Settlement of her the said Susanna Jenkin and Susan, Jane, John, James, and Thomas her said Children is in the Parish of Crowan in the said County of Cornwall THESE are therefore to require and we the said Justices do hereby Order that if within Twenty‐one Days after you, the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the said Parish of Wendron shall have sent, or delivered unto the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Crowan a Notice in Writing of the said Susanna Jenkin and her said Children being so chargeable as aforesaid, together with a Copy or Duplicate of this Order, and a Copy of the Examinations on which this Order is made, no Notice of Appeal against this Order shall be given by the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Crowan that then you the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Wendron or some or one of you, or some proper person or persons to be employed by you, do remove and convey the said Susanna Jenkin and her said five children from and out of your said Parish of Wendron to the said Parish of Crowan and them deliver, together with this our Order or a Duplicate or true Copy thereof, unto the Overseers of the Poor there, or one of them, who are hereby required to receive and provide for them according to Law.

GIVEN under our Hands and Seals, at Helston, in the said County of Cornwall the thirty first day of July in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Forty seven
