Gary supplied some beach balls with the Bates Beach logo on them which were batted enthusiastically back and forth across the pool. After a few intense games of volleyball on the south lawn, Kevin organized several rounds of Frisbee Golf. Kathy Robinson won the women’s golf category and first place in the men’s category was taken by Mike Muller. The manager told us we were the neatest and friendliest group they’ve had there in a long time, and she hoped we would return next year.

Members and guests from three Southern California clubs mingle poolside at Palm Springs event. A WONDERFUL AFTERNOON ATTRACTS LARGE TURNOUT TO PALM SPRINGS PARTY One of the most successful parties SCNA has ever hosted took place Saturday, May 10, in Palm Springs as members and guests converged at Casa de Monte Vista, the former home of actor Robert Stack, for an afternoon of sun, pool play, competitive games, and great food. The weather was perfect (high 80s) with just a slight breeze to make the desert air more comfortable. The high green foliage around the yard blocked the gusty winds that often kick up in Palm Springs during the afternoon. Also attending were club members from the NitOC club in Orange County and the Camping Bares of San Diego. Even a couple from Avila Beach/Pirates Cove in San Luis Obispo drove down to be with us. Total head count: 72, the second largest party SCNA has held (the record remains Peter’s 2010 party in Camarillo, where 83 attended). NitOC set up their day tents on the lawn adjacent to the pool, and it became the social center for the day. Being next to the and all that pot luck food also made it an idea location to meet and greet old friends. Several of the old timers there said the party ambiance reminded them a lot of Elysium Fields before it closed in Topanga Canyon in 2000. It did have the same energy and friendly warmth we remember from there! The SCNA’s mascot Gnudie the Gnome greeted people at the food court. The pot luck table was absolutely overflowing with amazing dishes worthy of any cruise ship ! Someone brought a yard-long deli sandwich, and someone else brought empanadas. There also was a Texas caviar , homemade macaroni and cheese, and so much more! Someone else made an amazing fruit salad of mango, pineapple, and coconut. The were bountiful and MORE PHOTOS NEXT PAGE overflowing with various cookies, brownies, cakes, and pies. And let’s not forget Paki’s homemade cheesecake shooters (along with Rolf’s home-brewed ). We observed it was a smaller turnout than in previous years, possibly due to the overcast morning, but that just meant more places to sun around the pool and fewer competitors for the annual auction of useful household things donated by the residents for the benefit of the Kids Activity Fund. There was also a dunk tank down below which was pretty active all afternoon. The park also had booths to sell leftover Burro Run T-shirts and backpacks. While we were in the lower section, Becky was enthusiastically hawking packages of homemade peanut butter or macadamia nut cookies to anyone walking nearby (and doing an excellent !). Becky had her “energizer bunny” batteries going all day, helping Bobby prepare the evening feast and also serving it in a very timely manner just before the Pirates Show began at dusk. Many people dressed for dinner as temperatures dropped with the sun. Bobby prepared an excellent of his famous baby back ribs, baked potato, corn on the cob, and side salad. Becky finished off the meal with her special strawberry cupcakes.

HOW TO RSVP AND PAY FOR SCNA PARTIES AND ACTIVITIES Payments by cash or check are accepted, but we prefer members pay by credit card through our on-line PayPal (you don’t need a Pay Pal account yourself to use ours). We accept MasterCard, VISA, Discover, and American Express. Party cancellations are also accepted no later than 48 hours before the start of the event because that is when we buy the party supplies and food. No Refunds are given after that deadline.
