Spring Term 2018 Haygrove Headlines

Schools Will Rock You BBC Schools Report Duke of Edinburgh Sport Relief During the Spring term, a team of Year 10 students researched, wrote and prepared a number of news stories to put together and present for the BBC School Report 2018. The BBC School Report aims to give young people in the UK the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience. With support from BBC staff and partners, teachers help students develop their journalistic skills to become School Reporters. These budding journalists spent several lunchtimes preparing their stories and scripts ready for when they had to go out on location and report about the news! For this year's submission, the students decided to Visit our website or tackle the following stories... YouTube page to see Local Story: Hinkley Point C and Traffic Across the finished report! International Story: The Doomsday Clock - 2 Minutes to Midnight School Story: 80th Anniversary of the School Site

Once all the filming was complete, the footage was then edited together and uploaded to an interactive map for the BBC to see. The BBC then choose their favourites to focus on during the local news broadcast. Visit the BBC website to see Haygrove on the interactive map and see what other local schools have been looking into.

Upon hearing about our involvement, the news anchors from the team (Nathanial and Eve) were invited to visit the BBC Radio Station in Taunton to look around and talk live on air about the project and their experiences! They both did the school proud by talking so brilliantly about the experience.

All of the students involved were absolutely brilliant throughout the project. The professionalism, creativity and enthusiasm displayed by the Year 10s was fantastic and we are very proud of what they have achieved. A massive thanks to Miss Hardy ad Mr Dibble for helping to organise and guide the team. Students involved were: Nathaniel Warren, Eve Tottle- Venton, Hope Jones, Lianna Ring, Sebastian Fitzmaurice, Dylan Parker-Stephenson, Patrick Lockyer and Racheal Dinham. Spring Term 2018

BRONZE AWARDS EVENING 2018

Following months of dedication and hard work, 50 of our Year 10 students proudly walked onto stage to finally accept their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Having started the programme in 2017, these committed kids embarked on multiple challenges in order to obtain this prestigious award. This includes hours of volunteer work, documenting the learning of new skills, taking up a sport, and a long expedition which was reminisced with fond memory on the night. Firstly, the audience were treated to a fantastic violin performance from Bronze achiever Patrick Lockyer. Ex-student Laura Gallagher, who is now the 2017 British trampoline champion and World & European medallist, also gave a motivational speech about the struggles of her journey to success. Presented by Head of Year Miss Mitchell, Mrs Clark, Laura and special guest Marjorie Rigby (Leader of the Marjorie Rigby DofE Bursary) the students accepted their certificates and badges in the school hall as proud parents applauded to celebrate their brilliant achievements. “The award can be challenging to all students. Some may find learning a new skill difficult whereas others might not be used to the physical aspect of the programme. Employability Skills! A group of Year 10 students, who are studying on our Vocational Pathway programme, travelled to the Langport offices of the Somerset Business Agency to present their ideas for two food products to local business people and be assessed for their Enterprise course. The enterprise project challenged the students to invent and bring to market a new food product using entrepreneurial skills such as logo design, branding and sales tactics. The students worked fantastically together in teams and did a brilliant job!

Amazing Musicians

Congratulations to our very own KS4 band: Tuxedo Movement for taking the top spot at the YMCA Somerset Coast Battle of the Bands!

This talented team were put forward to enter after winning Haygrove's 'School of Rock' concert in December. Also competing were our younger KS3 band. They also performed brilliantly despite a recent injury.

"I was very proud of ALL performances from our students and a particular mention to the dedication of Maria who hobbled on stage and performed fantastically, not wanting to let the other girls down! A great evening and our students did us proud. Lots of positive comments from supporters of other schools!" - Mr Whiteoak, Head of Music On the last week of term, our talented students took to the stage as they came together as a cast to perform, for three consecutive nights, the musical production of "Schools Will Rock You". As those that attended will already know, the show was absolutely phenomenal. The singing, acting and dancing talents of our students never ceases to impress. For some students this would have been their first time ever performing on a big stage, but you would never have guessed! It was fantastic to see so many talented young people getting involved and trying something new. The levels of enthusiasm and support on and off stage were absolutely brilliant. We cannot express how proud we are as a school of our young performers as they got up on stage and really gave it their all!

"The cast this year should be exceptionally proud of what they have produced. They have come together as a company for the first time, working with different students and staff across the school. Their commitment and dedication to creating a show for you to enjoy is highly commendable."

Miss Joseph, Director/Head of Drama

"Sensational Performance! It is impossible to

capture the benefits for the students but they were clear from looking at their faces.”
