DACUSVILLE — Dacusville Fire department officials say a recently acquired truck will help in efforts to suppress wildfires in Pickens County. The South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) presented Dacusville Fire Department with a service truck Thursday afternoon. The truck was acquired from an agency in another state, which, according to officials, no longer had use for it. “This is a new program that was introduced about two years ago,” Dacusville Fire Chief Charles Hamilton said. “It has been helpful because it has given us a new truck that will allow us to better serve the community.” SCFC’s Firefighter Program reassigns equipment to outlying South Carolina fire departments in need of wildfire suppression vehicles. This Chevy is equipped with off-road capabil- ity and large water carrying/discharging capacity which will help control advancing fires in difficult terrain. “This is a service truck,” Hamilton said. “We will use it mainly when we are assisting other depart- ments with fires because it can haul extra equip- ment. Our trucks only hold about four air packs, so if you’re going onto a scene with 11 firefighters, you won’t have enough equipment. This truck will help us haul the right amount of equipment for each emergency.” In recent years, the community experienced an 80-90-acre wildfire. As development progresses, fire department officials say those living in the Wildland Urban Interface rely on equipment and personnel specifically dedicated to wildfire suppres- sion. The truck was acquired from an agency in another state, which, according to officials, no longer had use for it.
