Good evening and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Croydon FC.

What a nice feeling to have a compeve football match for us to all look forward to. However much you try to get excited for friendlies (and I do) nothing beats a fixture with genuine risk and reward involved.

I am well versed in the clubs history in this compeon, and although I can’t claim we will be able to match the clubs cup winning season where during the early naughes we beat a full me Woking side in the final, we will do our best to get as far as we can and give people something to look forward to.Croydon of course will have their own ideas, and have a good manager and playing group that successfully came from 3-0 down last weekend to win in the 4-3.

It is a very strange me at the moment without the consistency of a connuous compeve campaign that we are all used to. Our player group, and even staff, have been struggling to stay as movated as usual and stay on the top of their game. I think one of the over riding quesons is what if we don’t start again?

We can only allow these thoughts to be for the most fleeng of moments and do our best to keep our standards. I think for all of us, players; management and supporters alike, it’s so important to keep a roune for our mental health, as much as hing the ground running when the campaign eventually resumes. That’s why I’ve done my best to ensure we are playing Saturday Tuesday to the best of my abilies to keep us all moving and our habits strong!

This period off has had some benefits though. One of these, is it has allowed us to get players back from injury (or closer to return). Our captain, Ma Bunyan returned with 45 minutes in the tank on Saturday. Dan Brown has now featured in all friendlies since lockdown. George Spires will be doing the warm up tonight and able to run in straight lines again. James Coee is only 2 or 3 weeks away from his return. Duffy managed to return last week aer his injury / niggles but is now isolang aer a posive case at the school he works at. Steven and his family are all thankfully safe and well you’ll be relieved to know.

We have also had the opportunity to look to add a couple more to our squad. Aer limping into

6 #ASHCRO ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com lockdown fielding a bare 11 of fit players for the previous 2 or 3 games (of which even in the 11 half of us couldn’t move) we thought with such a hecc schedule coming up when we return, we need more depth. Below you’ll find our 2 most recent signings. We are also looking at 2 other trialists you’ll have seen at games in the last week, who we hope will feature again on Saturday.

Players In: George Frise - Centre Mid. Frise was my U18s captain at Hartley and has been with me since he was 15 years old and lied the Hampshire Youth cup with us. He also was my Academy captain. He has spent the last 2 years in New Zealand and has returned looking a fantasc addion. He has clearly connued to develop and has earnt himself forms aer strong performances against Banstead, Reading City and Kingstonian. George will not be available tonight as we await internaonal clearance.

Dion Dublin - Striker - The keen eyed amongst you will have seen Dion on the bench for us against Kingstonian. Now well into his 40s, Dion has bags of experience having played at an elite level for many years.

Players Out: Tim Pi - We thank Tim for his me, he played a valuable part in our win against Harlow Town, but his brief snt is over and he wishes to pursue opportunies elsewhere. We wish him all the best.

Another benefit of this break, is it has allowed us to get more involved in the Youth / vice versa. I’m very proud over the course of the last few games that we have had 5 youth boys feature and all give good accounts of themselves. Credit must go to both them, and Paul Gower and his management team who have done such a good job with the boys.

I also need to give credit to the club, in parcular the likes of Nick, Alan and all the commiee, for finding ways to keep the club going. It would be so easy to give up and throw in the towell, but we always seem to find a way to make things work. There’s always a reason to carry on. There’s always a way we can get through these challenging mes. As you have a drink tonight in the bar (with your pie!) have a drink to the many at the club that have jumped through hoops and legislaon to make this possible.

So there we go. I hope you enjoy the game tonight. Up the Tangerines!!

Tuffs Xx

Club History Croydon Amateurs FC was founded on 17th April 1953 to provide senior amateur football at the newly built Croydon Sports Arena. And whilst the idea for a senior club carrying the town’s name had been mooted prior to the war, nothing had become of the suggeson and the catalyst proved to be the laying of the running track and the need for the football pitch to be used. At the inaugural meeng, Jack Milsted was elected Chairman and George Burrows Secretary, a strong partnership for the first twenty-years. At the me, the club had nothing, its inial funding being by way of public donaons. The Surrey Senior League suddenly found itself with a space to fill and this enabled the fledgling club to have somewhere to compete and ten years were spent in that compeon. The club was ambious and aer its annual rejecon by the Corinthian League, 1963-64 saw elevaon to the Spartan League where it won its first Championship. The original clubhouse was also erected during this season, having been obtained from a local building site. The extended Athenian League gave them the opportunity of further advancement in 1964 and the Division Two tle won in 1966. Four years later, there was relegaon followed by two successive runners-up spots which meant Premier Division football. But manager Jimmy Rose who masterminded those two seasons departed to Dulwich and the team broke up. A season of struggle followed and then the Isthmian started to expand although the club missed out on the first intake, a me when clubs could openly pay players. With the impending end of amateur status, the club dropped its suffix during the summer of 1973. Ted Shepherd took over as manager, introduced a much more professional atude and thus began one of the club’s most successful decades. 1974 saw elecon to the Isthmian League and in 1975-76 the team went undefeated in its league programme to gain promoon to the top table. There were four final appearances in the League, London Senior and Surrey Senior Cups, winning the laer in 1982. 1979 saw the club’s best run in the FA Cup, losing to Millwall in a Second Round replay at The Den. Shepherd was succeeded by Barrie Webb for the 1984-85 campaign and then Adrian Hill (1985-87) who took the club to its highest ever League posion – fourth in the Premier Division – in 1986. It was atthismethatfinancestookaturnfortheworse, money–orratherthelackofit–wastherootcause and seven seasons of struggle ensued. Maers weren’t helped when the local authority decided to redevelop the Arena, exiling the club and causing a massive loss in revenue.

Founder Chairman Milsted, together with two of the Club’s other elder statesmen, Alf Haylock and 12 #ASHCRO ashfordtownmiddlesexfc.com

President Charles Waters rered in 1990, and the years that followed under new management culminated in the Club’s name being dragged through the guer. There was lile stability either on or off the field. Five Chairmen and eleven team managers, mounng debts and threats of closure are ample evidence of that. The nadir of the mismanagement was 1993-94 but in stepped local businessman, Ken Jarvie at the eleventh hour. Phoenix Sun, his League side, stepped up nine levels of football to keep the Club’s name alive.

Jarvie’s arrival sparked one of the club’s most successful periods but there was a financial cost He tended to do things his own way which caused some fricon but he inspired loyalty from his players. He led the club to promoon from Division Two in 1996 and a nineteen match unbeaten run at the beginning of 2000 saw Croydon storm to their first league tle since 1966. In addion, the club reached its first cup finals since 1982. Defeat against Woking in the Surrey Senior Cup was forgoen a day later with victory over Purfleet in the Full Members Cup.

The club survived its first season back in the Premier Division winning the London Senior Cup but budget cuts led to the loss of a number of quality players and relegaon followed a year later. Jarvie stepped down suddenly during the summer of 2002 leaving Dickson Gill to begin a fieen year reign. The Club connued to struggle and was duly relegated to Division Two in April 2005. Money remained an ever present problem and 2006 saw a season of consolidaon and being placed in the Kent League in the big reorganisaon of the non-League game.

A third place finish in its inaugural campaign was the best. Maers stagnated and regressed, the one on-field success being in 2009 when the Kent League Cup and Charity Shield found their way west across the county border. There followed a short spell in the Combined Counes League before being directed back east to the newly re-tled SCEFL. Having cried wolf on numerous occasions, Gill eventually resigned in January 2017. Linking up with Kinec, the club started to move forwards once again under new Chairman Marn Burr but his was only to be a short reign and having died things up, he stepped down. A fih place finish augured well for the current campaign but then in May 2018, manager Harry Hudson succumbed to the advances of Whyteleafe and he disappeared with virtually all of the first team pung the club back to square one. His inial replacement for was Craig Davies who therefore had his work cut out but the challenge appeared insurmountable and aer seven league defeats on the spin, he fell on his sword.

Chris Brown took on the mantle and whilst he achieved two league wins, the annus horribilis showed no real signs of coming to an end. Miracle worker John Cumberbatch, who took over when Gill le two years ago had a short spell back in charge before Liam and Trevor Giles aided by John Gladwin took over with a damage limitaon exercise and a mandate to complete the season and prepare for the future. And just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, the clubhouse was burgled in March and a lot of needless damaged caused! Come the week before this season and a painng weekend saw a further raid and more senseless damage caused. The management intend that the Club should live within its means, not chasing fool’s gold with unsustainable big budgets but not the income to sustain such ambions.

SO, it's Marine against Mourinho. Who says the magic has gone from the FA Cup? Last week's glamour third round e, which pied the Northern Premier League Division One North West Mariners with Premier League leaders Toenham Hotspur – a difference of 166 league places to be precise – is a Christmas fairytale come true for Neil Young's men and indeed for all the football purists who vigorously defend the FA Cup's proud stance as the greatest cup compeon in the world. Who would've believed that Marine's modest Rosse Park - backdrop of the BBC live broadcast where presenter Mark Chapman chaed by Turner and other FA Cup heroes from Chorley and Stockport County - would soon play host to 'The Special One' and his star-studded Spurs side in one of the es of the century? And the wasn't just the Mariners being looked aer by the FA Gods. Stockport were also pied against Premier League opposion in West Ham United, Chorley were drawn with Wayne Rooney's Derby County and Boreham Wood got 2004 finalists Millwall. All at home, all undoubtedly in front of the TV cameras. It was stuff that dreams are made of. With five promoons as a manager under his belt – including three at former club Chester – not a lot fazes the wily Young in the world of football. But the humble surroundings at his new home at Rosse Park, however, clearly hold a place in his heart. Young talks openly of regularly bumping into the assistant referee as he leaps out of his manager's dugout and watching neighbours peer through the wire fence from adjoining gardens as his team take to the field. Indeed, ed to one of the aforemenoned wire fences in a sign with '29' on it, indicang which house to retrieve the ball from should it be hoofed over in that direcon. Imagine dear old Mrs Smith wrapped up in front of the fire and enjoying a peaceful aernoon's telly only to be disturbed by a fully-kied Harry Kane knocking at her door and asking for his ball back! The draw reminded me of my days as a cub reporter covering Farnborough Town and the year when they locked horns with the mighty Arsenal in a fourth round clash in 2003. The e was switched – and rightly so in my opinion – from Farnborough's humble Cherrywood Road stadium to Highbury on safety grounds, allowing around 9,000 fans (sll not sure where they got them all from) to make the trip up from Hampshire to north London to cheer on the minnows against the likes of Patrick Vieira, Sol Campbell and Dennis Bergkamp et al. To this day, Farnborough's solitary goal in a 5-1 defeat, scored by Rocky Bapste, remains the club's most famous ever, while full-back Michael Warner talks of the moment he gleefully upended flying French winger Robert Pires. A day never to be forgoen by all involved. Arsenal, and boss Arsene Wenger, did visit humble surroundings several years later when they were drawn against all- conquering Suon United in a fih-round e in 2017. Anyone who has seen the away dressing room at could understand what a humble experience it must have been for the likes of Wenger, Theo Walco, Alex Iwobi and Granit Xhaka but the Gunners oozed professionalism and class throughout, both on and off the field, to come away with a 2-0 victory. And how about Burton Albion, who welcomed the mighty Manchester United to their old Pirelli Stadium as a Non- League club back in 2006, holding them to a 0-0 draw despite coming up against the likes of Rooney, Crisano Ronaldo and Gerard Pique. Those two matches with United – the replay ending in a 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford - were heralded as the catalyst for Burton's meteoric rise up the football pyramid, while etched firmly in the memories of Brewers fans both young and old. While the probability is that the likes of Kane maybe afforded the weekend off with Marine's centre-halves desperate to lock horns with the England captain, other star names will be called upon to get the job done. Dele Ali, Lucas Moura, Harry Winks...all are likely to play a part in an occasion to remember for the Marine faithful on Merseyside. You can bet your boom dollar, however, that the Spurs boys are not looking forward to it one lile bit!
