2 Society Notice Board

Editor’s Comments: As stated last month we headed south in glorious weather and we managed to keep ahead of the deteriorating weather behind and to the west of us, 4 days in shorts…what a sight. It all came to an abrupt halt Monday night, the 3rd October, but by then we had reached the outskirts of Eastbourne and had visited 15 preservation sites, albeit some were only a couple of items of stock but that has added another 1200 photos to my collection. What with editing 40 pages now I’m struggling to caption them all, only about 7000 behind, so just doing the ones relevant to the next issue. Strange how your life can turn on its head and emphasizes the need to ‘do it’ while you can, whatever that is. The continual monthly long distance travel is great for visiting preservation sites, only really accessible by car, but the days of rail travel and having the time to stand on a platform and gather info for Location ‘Spot’Lights as I did for 3 years…no chance at the moment. This again is why I urge those of who can get out and about and are recording the day to day railway to send in info and photo.

As you will see those that do send in stuff will get featured and receive my full editorial polish, so don’t overly worry if the grammar and spelling ‘aint write’ !! Remember as long as you also send photos at a high resolution and not compressed by the email, I can always edit ones that are dark or skew-whiff.

Another plea for help is for fresh blood on the wagon front. As you may have noticed, I have been personally providing more in Freight Corner of late. This is due to Martin Hall being so busy with his other demanding projects he has had less time to devote to ICRS. There is therefore an opportunity for someone to step forward and make Freight Corner their own and be an important part of the editorial team. Wagon and freight news is an important part of the railway…without something to pull there would be no locos !! Anyone interested should either email or telephone me anytime for a chat. If someone can to write wagon reviews I can often provide supporting photos if not provided by the author. I must thank Martin for his efforts since taking on the role back in Jan 2006 and I’m sure he will still provide guest articles in the future as time permits.

Out and about several members, myself included, have recorded what was a busy period for Galas on preservation railways, made all the better by the weather. Together with Dave Spencer’s excellent vintage photos in Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast this means there is a feast of nostalgia with not only photos of steam but photos of all the following heritage diesel and electric loco classes (17 in total) 03/05/08/12/14/20/21/25/26/31/37/37/42/45/50/55 & 83 plus a few heritage units for good luck. One article that will be held over until next issue is about the Stainmore Railway and the completion of the heritage centre and new platform at Kirkby Stephen East. With the preservation scene largely shutting down for the winter there will be more on the current scene in coming months.

The cascade of units continues involving LMT, NR & FGW in particular with Cl.150s moving away from LMT, replaced by Cl.372s. Also more EMU carriage orders are expected to be placed with Southern looking for 130 probably Cl.377 and LMT (8) plus FTPE (10) after Cl.350/3s, the latter confirmed with Siemens. FTPE will use them to replace Cl.185 DMUs running on the northern section of the WCML allowing them to cascade to the core trans-Pennine services.

7 Network News - 1

Miscellaneous News: The transport job in government is always seen as a stepping stone and therefore we never get a long term resident. So it is again with Philip Hammond moving on in the cabinet re-shuffle to be replaced by unknown Justine Greening as Secretary of State for Transport. Welcome to the post. Cargo-D and its trading arm Rail Blue Charters has gone into administration. Its assets include 55 coaches stored at various locations including Barrow Hill. Abelilo the subsidiary of Dutch State Railways, Nederlandse Spoowegen has won a 29 month contract to take over the Greater Anglia franchise currently run by NExEA. Abelilo already operates Northern Rail and Merseyrail. DRS has applied to start a Mon-Fri daily service for workers between Carlisle and its plant at Sellafield. It will call at all stations en route and will comprise 4 Mk2 coaches t&t by Cl.37s. General public may also be allowed to use the train if agreement is reached with local operator NR. The outward southerly departure will be 05.20 with a return somewhere around 15.45. The service will end in 2013 so as not to cause conflict with West Coast franchising.

East Grinstead / Bluebell Railway Waste Removal by Trevor Roots: The East Grinstead branch is being upgraded to increase capacity to accommodate 12 car formations involving the lengthening of platforms. Some stations on the branch have already been completed.

At the terminus of the line at East Grinstead work also started in July on doubling the track by removing the short section of single lead approach before lengthening work could start (the ‘missing’ double track can clearly be seen from the April cover photo). The doubling was completed in late October and platform lengthening is planned to be complete by the December timetable change. The photo below shows ongoing work on the 12th October to double the track on the left of GBRf 66721 ‘Harry Beck’ approaching with MRA empties on the Bluebell Railway (BBR) waste train at 13.40.

A full report of the BBR waste removal was given in the April issue. To update the situation, the current operation, the fourth so far started on the 26th September and finished 5 weeks later on the 29th October. With greater flexibility in pathing, the waste is now transported to Appleford near Didcot where it can be processed more efficiently. The timings down the East Grinstead branch remain unaltered and at least 66721, 66728 and 66731 have been used. Interestingly the temporary trackwork has not been extended further west into the tip, the tip is being moved eastwards and it is not easy to visualise the vast quantity being moved. However trackwork at the current northern extension has been partially lifted to allow clay capping to be stored via a ramp down from the eastern face of the tip, under Imberhorne Lane Bridge. The clay capping will be re-used elsewhere on the BBR. Compare the view right from Imberhorne Lane with that on page 11 in the April issue. The clay can be seen stored to the left of the track. Once a channel has been cut through the tip then the ultimate alignment of the track can be assessed and a plan made to remove the remaining waste before the landfill tax bites from 1st April 2012.

8 Ramblings of a Rail Enthusiast by David Spencer – 1964 Part 4

Just so you don’t blame Dave if there are errors, I always add the extra info on photo captions, other than number, date and location, to complete the story of the item of traction, ed.

As mentioned last month, the end of May was given over to a trip around Scotland with a Freedom of Scotland pass, I hope the editor shows the ticket…I have, ed) and just look at the price, just six guineas, £6-6shillings (£6.30) and I reckoned I saved a bomb even on my privilege ticket rate.

Prior to starting my Scottish trip I popped along to Birmingham Snow Hill on the 20th May to witness BR Type 4 1Co-Co1 Peak D59, only 23 months old, being named ‘The Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers’.

later classified Cl.45, D59 was re-numbered 45104 under TOPS and was cut up in June 1988 at Vic Berry’s scrapyard in Leicester

The start of my journey north began on 23rd May with D230 taking me to Stafford, E3099 onto Crewe and D316 to Carlisle. Being a Saturday there was a late train on the Silloth branch, which outward I did in daylight although it was dark on my return.

English Electric 25kv Bo-Bo E3099 (later 83014 under TOPS) (w/d 07/83) less than 23 months old, so still carries the original double pantograph, Stafford, 23 May 1964

My ticket started on Sunday 24th with D220 to Glasgow Central and in those days travel on Sunday in Scotland was very limited so I stayed in the Glasgow area (I don't think they had invented Strathclyde

10 by then). I first went to Gourock and on the ferry to Dunoon and then back to Port Glasgow with a DMU. 73055 then took me to Wemyss Bay and a ferry to Rothsey and back and I returned to Glasgow behind 42259. The EMU blue train network then took over and I covered the inner Cathcart circle, then successively Motherwell, Pollockshields East, Neilson, Milngavie, Springburn, Balloch and Bridgetown before returning to Glasgow

Overnight D5321 took me to Aberdeen and a DMU to Fraserburgh, and another onto the St Coombs branch. This was a real of a railway with every station including the terminus an earth bank and wooden platform edge and some very rudimentary shelters, it’s no wonder few folk used it! There being no Peterhead train mid morning I had to go back to Aberdeen by DMU and then get D6149 back up to Maud Junction. D6148 was the Peterhead branch engine and D5365 returned me to Aberdeen.

11

North British Type 2 Bo-Bo D6149 (later Cl.21) (w/d 12/67) note cab tablet catcher & Birmingham RCW Type 2 Bo-Bo (later Cl.26) D5316 (26016 under TOPS) (w/d 10/75 the second to w/d after D5328 & first re-numbered), Fraserburgh, 25 May 1964

Time here to visit Ferryhill shed before a DMU to and from Ballater finished off the day. I must have been tired after two nights without sleep but I don't know where I slept as I was on the 04.55 train to Forres which left behind D6137 some thirty one minutes late but was early by Elgin. I returned to Elgin with D6147 and then D6140 took me to Craigellachie to one of the scenic delights, a rail bus on the Speyside line in both directions to Aviemore and back. I was now deep into the editors country now as I got a DMU to Cairnie Junction this was one of those strange railway use only stations like Trent or Dovey Junction and others that were used only by passengers changing trains and there was no public access. From there I got D6147 again to Tillynaught and changed for Banff, I never understood and 78054 duly took me to the terminus where I had almost an hour and a half. I knew Macduff was close by so I went to discover and crossing the river I found Banff Bridge station and just round the headland was a beautiful Great North of Scotland Railway terminus. The track had been lifted but everything else was (almost) like the day it closed, including the overall roof and two track engine shed, a joy to behold. Returning to Tillynaught I caught a coast line train through Buckie back to Elgin in a DMU and another DMU onto Inverness….other than the Aberdeen – Inverness line, sadly nothing remains of the tracks David used in Aberdeenshire, though some of the infrastructure remains, ed.

Another overnight train this time double-headed with D5130 and another to Perth, then just half an hour later D5341 and D5322 took me back to Inverness thus saving another night’s accommodation. I then treated myself to a trip in the observation car on the Kyle of Lochalsh line behind D5125 which after a ferry trip to Kyleakin and back returned me to Inverness. For the second night running I caught the 23.20 south, this time to Gleneagles with D5122 then back to Perth behind D289. I had time to visit the shed and for contrast photographed 60023, 70007 and 55204. I then took a DMU to Stirling via the pretty Devon valley route with the delightfully named stations, Crook of Devon, Rumbling Bridge and Dollar. D5368 then took me onto Dundee West where I hopped across to Tay Bridge to catch a Tayport train. One could see the Tay road bridge being built, which was the death knoll for the branch which at the time was the only way across the Tay for people to work and shop in Dundee. The return DMU took me onto Arbroath where I saw the palandronic 46464 shunting. D369 returned me to Dundee where again I found time to visit the shed before heading for Edinburgh.

12 I cannot recall why, but I changed at Thornton Junction and Inverkeithing, I assume to go anti clockwise round the Fife circle. From Waverley I walked to Princess Street to get back to Glasgow and then walked to St Enoch to do the Kilmacolm branch. All these last journeys were by DMU.

Into the 29th and another overnighter on the 23.10 to Carlisle behind an unidentified English Electric type 4 and then returned to Gleneagles behind D298. Here was another little steam enclave and 80061 took me to Crieff and 44960 onto Comrie. The same engine returned me to Perth and a DMU on to Ballinluig Junction and the Aberfeldy branch. D5117 (later 24117 under TOPS w/d 02/76) was the branch engine, a train of one coach, two wagons and a brake van, a true mixed train (see photo below).

I did not understand at first why when it took just 19 minutes to reach Aberfeldy it took 33 minutes to get back until on the return journey the engine uncoupled in the platform at Grandtully whilst the engine did some shunting to add some freight wagons to our coach. We returned to Ballinluig Junction as another mixed train. It was back to DMU haulage for journeys to Perth, then Edinburgh and to and from Musselburgh. Brush D1518 then whisked me down the East Coast line to Berwick where I changed to 78048 for the Kelso and St Boswells train. After the engine had run round at Tweedmouth I asked the driver if I could have a ride with him and he agreed so I had a cab ride as far as Maxton when he got a bit twitchy about me being on the engine on the main line and I got back in the coach 13 for one stop into St Boswells. My Waverley line trip back to Edinburgh was behind D5304 to catch another overnighter the 23.30 Princess Street to Carlisle behind 45137 and 44972 to Carstairs and an unknown EE type 4 onwards. My last day started with a three hour doss down at Carlisle and the 04.42 to Hawick behind D23 and a quick shed visit where I found Jubilee 45670 ‘Howard of Effingham’ with A3 60052 ‘Prince Palatine’ passing by on a freight.

To kill time I carried on up the Waverley line as far as Stow behind D5312 whilst D5304 returned me to Riddings Junction where I changed for the Langholm branch. 43028 did the honours in both directions returning me to Carlisle. Back into Scotland as D305 took me to Carstairs and 44935 onto Lanark and from there a DMU to Muirkirk. It was raining stair rods by now and I didn't get out for a photograph and was never to return, I did try again later in the year but only got as far as Douglas West the second time.

Ivatt 4F 2-6-0 43028 (w/d 11/67) Langholm, 30 May 1964

On returning to Lanark another DMU took me into Glasgow, to match the blue trains north of the Clyde the Lanark and Hamilton tines were marketed as green trains at the time I don't know how they think these things up! Crossing to Queen Street I got what I think was rare haulage, but it might have been regular, EE type 1 (Cl.20) D8072 on a Kirkintilloch train, I have a photo but it was dark inside Queen Street so it will not be shown! We returned to Lenzie and a DMU to Haymarket. All week I had made every connection and everything had run like clockwork but here I had a minus one minute connection and failed as my connection pulled out on time. However I did not lose the Corstorphine branch as I had time to get a bus and catch the booked train back and through to North Berwick. With my return to Waverley my holiday was at an end and I walked to Princess Street for the second night running to catch the 23.30 which again was double-headed with 44952 and 44953 as far as Carstairs with D292 then onwards and home to Birmingham New Street …a total of 3287.25 miles and not one night in a bed! all photos by David Spencer (to be cont)

'The Magnificent Seven', Locomotion Shildon, 8th-9th Oct. 2011 by Neil Dix: 'The Magnificent Seven' were on display at Locomotion, Shildon over the weekend of the 8th & 9th October 2011. But this was not Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen and Co. this was a meeting of every surviving Cl.55 Deltic including the prototype. For anyone with an interest in these fine locos it was an event not to be missed and possibly, never to be repeated. I attended on the Sunday and began by purchasing the event programme. The programme seller was none other than Murray Brown, Chairman of the DPS and editor of Rail Express. After a quick chat, I walked over to the Deltics. They were lined up well for photographs; 55002 ‘King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’, 55019 ‘Royal Highland Fusilier’ and 55022 ‘Royal Scots Grey’ in BR blue, D9009 ‘Alycidon’, D9015 ‘’ and D9016 ‘Gordon Highlander’ in two tone green and ‘Deltic’ prototype in its striking light blue livery. For anyone wishing to go for a brake van ride, the resident Cl.03 D2090 was on hand. On display in the yard outside were Dutch 08 663 and steam locomotive 65033. Inside the museum were numerous stalls and model layouts along with plenty more locomotives and rolling stock. Of particular interest for me was the Turkish 8F 45170. Elsewhere the prototype APT (PC1, PC2, TC1 & TC2) looked pretty impressive and with a good mix of steam, diesel and electric there was something for everyone....see Days Out report in July issue for more on Shildon, ed.

London King’s Cross by Trevor Roots:

With ongoing works transforming King’s Cross, natural light has been shed on the concourse end of platforms 2 – 9 with the removal of cladding to reveal the new refurbished glazing, as can be seen below above Hull Trains 180111 in platform 3. Platform 2 alongside is currently closed.

Ribble Steam Railway Diesels Weekend, 1st - 2nd Oct.2011 by Trevor Roots: Over the first weekend of October the Ribble Steam Railway (RSR) held a diesel traction event using its operational resident fleet of ex-BR shunters. I decided to head for Preston where the railway has been based since moving from Southport in 1999.The railway is off Chain Caul Road and has been open to the public since 2005 and is somewhere I have wanted to visit for some time. We ‘planned‘ to go on the Saturday on our monthly trek from one end of Britain t’other. However our itinerary had been booked for some time and before I realised there was an event. Therefore we were travelling down the east coast, stopping in Sedgefield on the Friday night and Grantham on the Saturday. This meant a long outward cross country trip through the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria but with glorious weather, as most of you will have enjoyed, the journey was lovely taking in some fantastic scenery on the way. We also managed to call in at Shildon, being only 10 mins from the Travelodge and at Kirkby Stephen East the home of the Stainmore Railway. This was to see the great strides made in opening up the heritage centre and the building of a platform (an article will appear next month).

third in line, D2595 is heading off to the right of Chorley level crossing frame box (which is to the west of the station) to stable up in the running shed after its stint.

D2148 setting back onto the rear of the last service of the day with D9539 to follow onto the front (see photo opposite)

The result of these stops did mean it was going to be mid afternoon before we reached Preston to catch the last couple of services. However approaching from the north off the M6 we hadn’t bargained on major roadworks blocking the approach to Preston Docks with closed roads. It didn’t help that signing was non-existent, just one temporary sign, some way it proved from the railway. Fortunately we got a drawn diagram from a local resident but it still took 45mins negotiating Preston. As a former principal traffic engineer who signed the whole of Eastbourne and its approaches, paying particular attention to tourist attractions, I despair at the competence of some authorities to provide sufficient signing. I won’t go into the legalities and finances of how signs are provided but I always saw it as in the towns interest to not confuse visitors and in so doing the whole town benefits, not least from motorists wandering lost in unfamiliar suburbs trying to find out of the way attractions…as is the case with RSR. We eventually made it with 15 mins to spare before the last train was due out. As the 21 incoming train had yet to appear and with 50 locos on site spread between several buildings, I started haring around. The site composes Preston Riverside station, a four track large museum adjacent the station including shop and café, a four track running shed with workshop to the rear and another shed out of bounds to the east of the station. All the building are relatively new with finishing work still in progress. Other locos and rolling stock were to be found in sidings between the museum and the running shed and between the station and the east shed (for want of a definitive description).

D2595 stabled in the running shed

The shunters in operation were Cl.03 D2148, Cl.05 D2595 and Cl.14 D9539 only recently overhauled after being out of use for several years. In trying to see everything in the hour we had left before closure, I missed the incoming train hauled by D2595 as I was talking to a very friendly volunteer in

22 the workshop. This came off and eventually stabled in the running shed. Whilst it was doing this, D2148 and D9539 positioned themselves for the former to tail and the latter to top the last service at 16.00. Getting back to the station I was in time to actually catch all three in one photo (see overleaf).

Having watched the last service depart, there being no time to take the 35 min round trip, I continued dashing round all the exhibits. As mentioned above there are a lot of locos on site and is one of the largest collections in the UK though only 7 are former BR locos, 5 diesel shunters including non- operational 08628 (recently arrived), 03189 under restoration and 2 steam tender locos 46441 and 1300 (see photo and descriptions below). The steam locos were static exhibits in the museum whilst 03189 was in the workshop. Also in the museum was Dutch ‘08’ 671, one of seven of this type in the UK (a future article on these locos is planned).

An impressive collection, but a site protected by security fencing and therefore only accessible on opening days. RSR is a working railway mid week (see Wagon Review) with a connection to NR metals. With ambitions to build a station at the eastern extent of the line near Strand Road level crossing and therefore more direct access to the town centre, the future can only be bright for RSR

Nene Valley Railway, Autumn Diesel Gala, 1st - 2nd Oct. by Neil Dix: For many years now the Nene Valley Railway have been having a Spring and Autumn Diesel Gala, however for 2011 there was just the one which took place over the weekend of October 1st & 2nd. Visiting locos included 37503, 56303, 31190/D5613 and 08622 along with a number of others. Also on show after a long period out of sight, stored in the tunnel, was Cl.14 D9518 owned by the Iron & Steel Traction Group and still in its National Coal Board livery, numbered No.7....drat, not seen this one yet and was only up the road, but was heading east to Norfolk via another Cl.14 D9537 at Rippingale Station, ed. The weather was glorious with temperatures across the country breaking records. The advertised GBRF Cl.66 could not attend due to work commitments however it was still a decent event and the turnout commendable. 24 visiting 31190/D5613 double heading with resident 31108

25 Severn Valley Railway Diesel Gala, 6th Oct. 2011 by James Holloway: I caught a local Cl.150 from Solihull and changed at Stourbridge Junction where 139002 was working the town branch service. 172339 then took me on to Kidderminster arriving at 10.45.

This was the first time I had visited a gala on a Thursday and it was noticeable for the lack of children which gave it a more business like feeling. At 11.00 the action started and I stayed at Kidderminster for 3 hours to photograph as much as possible. The visiting locos were D306, D5613/31190, D7612, 50049 and D9520. I particularly came for D9520 since I had never seen it or any Cl.14 working before, it was used on the return service to Bewdley. SVR resident diesels in service were D821, D1062, 37906, 50031, 50044, D8059 & D8188. It was pleasure to see all 3 Cl.50’s working on the same day. Diesel shunters lined up in the station were 12099, D3022 and D3201/08133 (no number), see photo below.

resident D8059 visiting D7612

A good place to photograph or just watch the action is the footbridge between the station and the carriage shed, this is an easy walk by turning left out of the station, then first left into Comberton Place, at the end of the road follow the sign for Aggborough on a path taking you past the back of some houses to Stadium Close. After walking past 2 factory units on the left, turn left onto the path to the footbridge.

After eating fish ‘n’ chips and having a pint at the station I realised that I did not have enough time for a trip on the line, so I’ll do that next time. I returned home on 172340, much quieter and roomier than the Cl.150 Sprinters they have replaced. all photos by James Holloway

27 Gloucestershire Sightings by Nigel Hoskins

The following sightings are mostly from Gloucester Station, but also include workings on the avoiding line southeast of the station between Barnwood and Gloucester Yard Jncts. Light Rail, Metro & Tram News

Manchester Metrolink: Though the original 1992 built fleet of 32 T68 trams were due to have a life of 30 years, it has been agreed by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority to retire them early rather than refurbish them for the remaining 10 years. Therefore 12 additional new M5000 trams have been ordered to make an eventual single type fleet of 74. The timetable for phasing out the T68s has yet to be developed. Docklands Light Railway: With the Canning Town to Stratford International Station section now open (reported in last issue) DLR 43+50+59 are seen below at Stratford Regional Station in platform 17, formerly platform 2 of the original North London Line.

Tyne & Wear Metro: A new livery is being applied to refurbished cars as they go through a refit at Wabtec. The first car so treated is 4041 returned to North Shields depot on the 7th October. London Underground: New ‘S’ stock undertook daytime testing on the 9th October sporting ‘New Train’ stickers over all doors and windows to prevent the public trying to board. The 8 car set has been temporarily shortened to 7 cars. 31 Railway Globetrotters by Ray Smith

th th JAPAN, 12 – 27 May 2011 – Part 3: Saturday 21st May 2011: This was intended as a free day. The culture section were going to the Tori Gate at Miyajima, this marvellous structure is built on the shoreline and at high tide appeared to be floating in the sea. I saw it when I was in Japan the first time so I was happy to go with the rail section. We have our Japanese rail pass that cost £478.00 for 14 days unlimited travel, first class. We have already had more than our monies worth. Alan and Gordon, two of our group, who had also been to Japan before had already looked at the possibility of going to Kyushu, the third of the four islands. After Alan had spent more time with his timetable he had worked out that it was possible to go right down to the bottom of the island to Kagoshima. Nine of our party set off. To reach Kyushu from Honshu the line uses a tunnel under the Pacific. We have now crossed over and travelled under this ocean !.

We arrived at Hakata, the station for Fukuoka and had just over an hour there before travelling down to Kagoshima. We had 90 minutes there before catching a train to Kumamoto for one hour before returning to Hiroshema. On Kyushu we found more colourful classes of units that we had not seen so far. We travelled over 1000km that day and using our pass it cost us nothing.

The day was still not finished. The next station east out of Hiroshema (for some reason I did not write its name down) is the base for the bankers that assist the eastbound freights. We went there and saw 10 locomotives before returning to our hotel for a good nights rest.

Sunday 22nd May 2011: Main line steam. Our destination today is Matsue which is north east of Hiroshima. We are going the long way round. A last ride on the trams before boarding a Shinkansen to Shin Yamaguchi. Shin means new and in the station context applies to the Shinkansen stations as they are new compared to the original stations. Shin Yamaguchi is south west of Hiroshima, a journey time of one hour eleven minutes. Some of the earlier Shinkansen sets have been withdrawn with the better condition vehicles being reformed into six car units for shorter distances (see photo right). This now means that the vehicles do not share the same last numbers. 122 5005 heads a reformed set at Hiroshima, 22 May 2011 33 Once there we walked to original station where our train for the two hour journey to Tsuwano was already in the platform with Pacific C571 in charge (see photo left). After the obligatory photographs we boarded the train. We were now heading back north east. A spirited departure passing the depot to the right where diesel DE10 1514 and some units were stabled. Arriving at Tsuwano on time we had time to watch our locomotive head to the coaling area and turntable for the return journey. Outside the station, plinthed was 2-8-2 D51 194. We then continued to Matsue. Not a busy station at all.

Monday 23rd May 2011: We had a morning boat trip on the castle moat before departing for Kyoto via Okayama and Shin Osaka. The next station (another name I did not write down, Old age memory loss!) down the line had a large shed adjacent to the station. I got a few numbers but if I had known I would have gone there yesterday and from the platform I could have seen a lot more. We carried on to Kyoto where I spent some time on 6 car ‘Bullet’ 121/122, Okayama, 23 May 2011 the platform before food and beer time.

34 Days Out

Chinnor & Princes Risborough Rly. 16th October 2011 by James Holloway: My visit started at Chinnor, the only station on the line available to passengers, and is a very attractive station with good parking, shop and refreshments of snacks and drinks. I particularly went to see recent arrival 69621, which is an LNER Cl.N7 0-6-2T, a type I never saw when spotting in steam days. The loco is on hire until the end of October from the East Anglian Railway Museum, Chappel & Wakes Colne. The journey is a 7 mile round trip towards Princes Risborough, but at present stops half a mile short of the main line station. Plans are in hand to extend the line to the Chiltern Railways station. The service train was top and tailed by 69621 and Cl.08 D3018 with BR Mk1's 1845, 4584, 34671 and 35337. An excellent cream tea is served in the catering coach. The stock sidings are not accessible to visit or photograph. From the adjacent housing estate road I was able to see D8568, 31163, 37116 and DMU 55023. Plans for a new stock shed at Chinnor were passed in July 2011 and will cover some of the existing storage sidings.

Nothing to report

FREIGHT NEWS by Trevor Roots Spoil traffic from the Olympic site at Bow ceased on the 10th Sep. DRS has started a new service with SuperLow 45 wagons, manufactured by WH Davis. They can carry 9’-6” cubes to places previously inaccessible by rail due to clearance issues. The flow is between Teesport and the Widnes Depot of Stobart five days a week. Another new flow from Teesport also started in early Oct to the multimodal terminals of Malcolm Grangemouth and Elderslie, Glasgow operated by DRS and Malcolm Rail. DBS intends to operate regular European services soon on HS1 when 5 Cl.92s are equipped to be compatible with signalling on the line. One loco is already fitted. A new Tues – Sat intermodal service is now operated by GBRf from Felixstowe to the Roadways terminal Trafford Park, Manchester. WH Davis has converted another rake of HYA coal hoppers, by adding covers, for transport of pelletised biomass to Drax PS, Selby.

WAGON REVIEW

TIA Bogie Bitumen Tank Wagon Up until the recent introduction of coal trains along the Weardale Railway to Wolsingham (future article) the Ribble Steam Railway (RSR) was the only preserved line in the UK to operate regular revenue-earning freight trains. Considerable efforts were undertaken by the RSR, and its revenue- earning subsidiary Ribble Rail (who are responsible for the operation of the freight trains), to reinstate the bitumen trains, last run in 1995, between Lindsey Oil Refinery and the Lanfina / Total Bitumen plant on Leeward Road, Preston docks close to the RSR museum and Riverside Station. Before reinstating the service, the level crossing which crossed Strand Road diagonally and previously operated by a flag man was upgraded to automatic half barriers. The removal of track into the plant also meant a pipeline gantry had to be constructed over Leeward Road to allow discharge.

The service is run three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays and managed over the branch by Ribble Rail. A DBS Cl.60 or 66 hauls up to 15 tanks off the WCML alongside and to the south of Preston station to the exchange sidings behind the Odeon Cinema, which is the limit of NR metals. Here usually using one of the RSR’s Sentinel 0-4-0 diesels, previously used for the bitumen traffic, the rake of tanks is split in two to be hauled over RSR tracks to the discharge point in turn. It is possible the newly arrived 08628, once repaired, will be used for this heavy task in future. The service heads down the branch at 07.45 returning back at Preston Station at 09.10.

Though the service started with existing tanks, 30 new purpose built bogie tank wagons were built by Marcroft, as reported in Oct 2009 issue. These were officially handed over to their owners in Dec 2010 and are numbered 35.70.7790.000 – 029 (plus check mark).

The new wagons eliminate the need for staff to access the tops of the wagons, and they have thicker insulation to reduce heat loss during transport. Bitumen needs to be heated to 180°C in order to flow easily, and the wagons are heated using a bespoke system of external heating coils rather than traditional internal heating. This makes it easier to clean the interior, with no risk of a steam leak into hot bitumen. A vacuum relief valve is needed to prevent the creation of a vacuum which could result in the tank imploding as a wagon is emptied. To eliminate the risk of this valve becoming jammed by solidified bitumen there is a positive vent valve fitted to the top of the tank, mechanically linked to the

36 foot valve and fitted with an indicator flag visible from ground level. The Axiom TF25 bogies require less maintenance and are lighter than previous models, increasing the payload by a tonne to 74 tonnes as well as cutting track access charges. Detailed design of the wagons was carried out by Lloyds Register Rail, with Clayton Commercials manufacturing the tanks and frames and Axiom undertaking assembly.

39 ICRS Publications

UK Locomotives, Diesel Units, Electric Units and Irish Railways are small print runs, so if you don’t want to miss out, order yours now. The individual books have additional carriage number to unit number cross ref tables, not found in the Combine and are very useful. As for future titles, an eagerly awaited updated Ultimate Sighting File is in preparation for release during 2012 and will combine all locos into one book rather than the 3 previously published.

Copies of all books can be either ordered via PayPal online at www.icrs.org.uk or by cheque (made payable to ICRS) direct from Carl Watson (see page 2 for contact details).

All books, except A6 Pocket Datafiles, are A5 wire bound printed on 90gm paper with laminated card covers allowing them to be laid flat.
