Featuring an international collection of objects and specimens (including more than 50 human and animal mummies from Europe, Asia, Africa, the South Pacific and South America),Mummies of the World shows how mummification—both through natural and intentional processes—offers unprecedented insights into past cultures and forgotten civilizations. Step inside Holiday Junction this winter and discover a world of engineering, locomotion and heart-warming holiday traditions. Watch the Duke Energy Holiday Trains as they pass by on miniature displays, meet Santa, say hello to local train collectors, complete hands-on crafts, participate in activities and ride through a holiday scene on our riding train, The Cincinnatian!

Learning Labs Investigate topics like dinosaurs, simple machines, archaeology and astronomy in our interactive labs that inspire all ages to learn and participate. Choose from several Learning Labs, some of which include suggested OMNIMAX® pairings and guided tours of Museum exhibits. Designed for pre-kindergarten through grade 12. You’re the Scientist! Grades 4 through 10 Channel your inner scientist, test your critical and analytical thinking skills and complete experiments in this fast-paced lab. Due to the use of sharp instruments and advanced technology, teacher and chaperones must assist with experiments as needed.

Fantastic Physics Grades 4 through 12 Measure distance, energy and force while launching table top trebuchets! Make dancing non-Newtonian fluid, explore nano science applications and discover more in this physics-based class.

Interact with Chemistry Grades 9 through 12 Create chemical and physical changes and explore acids and bases. Gain an understanding of the elements on the periodic table and learn about the behavior of atoms and molecules.

Meet Stuffee Learning Lab Meet Stuffee, a nine-foot-tall, blue-haired, smiling anatomy doll! Feed Stuffee lunch then unzip him to identify a number of organs, discuss their functions and learn how our body works. Also available on Mondays.

My Rainforest Adventure Learning Lab Take an imaginary tour of a rainforest canopy to learn about the animals and plants that live there. Pairs well with OMNIMAX® filmIsland of Lemurs: Madagascar.

This Little Dinosaur* Learning Lab Discover a tale of exploration that’s 65 million years in the making through replica dinosaur fossils, footprints and other evidence. Also available on Mondays.

Will it Float?* Learning Lab Is water heavy or light? Does air have anything to do with buoyancy? Experiment with the basic principles of water as you test objects that either sink or float.

Cave Dwellers* Learning Lab Discover the delicate ecosystem of a cave and investigate the animals that call it home. This program includes a guided experience of our replica limestone cave inside the Museum of Natural History & Science. Pairs well with OMNIMAX® filmJourney into Amazing Caves.

Dinosaur Discovery* Learning Lab Become a junior paleontologist and work with your team to discover fossils wrapped in a crate! Then investigate the properties and characteristics of the fossils to identify them. This program includes a guided experience in the Museum of Natural History & Science’s Dino Hall.

Simple Machines at Work (and Play) Learning Lab Learn the basics of simple machines then analyze and engage with the machine stations in the Duke Energy Children’s Museum’s Energy Zone. Discover the function of each station and see how we use simple machines to accomplish jobs. This program is not available on Mondays.

Cincinnati in Motion Learning Lab Cincinnati’s been a hub of transportation throughout history. Discover canoes, steamboats, trolleys and trains and see how the movement of people and products has always been at the heart of the city. This program includes a guided experience through Cincinnati History Museum’s transportation related exhibits with an emphasis on the Cincinnati in Motion exhibit.

Coming to America* Learning Lab The 19th century brought people from all around the world to Cincinnati’s doorsteps. Explore factors that might influence an immigrant to leave their home and learn how these groups impacted our local community. Identify the push-and-pull factors that made the U.S. the Land of Opportunity and discover how these groups influenced Cincinnati’s rich cultural history. Recommended for grade 3.

Life on the Ohio River Learning Lab Take an imaginary ride down the Ohio River and learn what life was like for Native Americans and early settlers. Explore how the river has affected, and been affected by, changes in lifestyle and travel throughout history. This program includes a guided experience in Cincinnati History Museum’s Settlement to 1860s exhibit. Recommended for grade 3.

20 MUSEUM LIVE! Programs

Step outside the classroom for one-of-a-kind learning experiences that engage audiences of all ages. Our inter-disciplinary dramas and programs accommodate large groups, Scouts and buses full of students. Theater LIVE! Theater LIVE! programs are designed to engage both students and adults. This program uses varied learning styles, promotes personalized learning and reinforces proficiency goals through interdisciplinary live dramas. Lewis & Clark: Meet the Press Grades 3 through 12, max 245 students March 17 through 20, 2015 Reservations start at the top of any hour between 9 a.m. & Noon. Experience history front-row and join us for a theatrical blending of past and present. Become the press and interview Lewis and Clark during a mock press conference. Learn what sparked their desire to set about on this famous expedition, discover the preparations that were made and learn about what President Jefferson hoped would be discovered during their westward passage. This hour-long program shares the expectations, discoveries, mishaps and triumphs of these two great explorers and their Corps of Discovery.

$11.50 per person includes a ticket for Lewis & Clark: Meet the Press and a ticket to an OMNIMAX® screening of Lewis & Clark: Great Journey West. Tickets are available independently for the Theater LIVE! experience for $6. Theater LIVE! and OMNIMAX® run 1 hour independently or 2 hours for the package. Scout Programs All Scout Programs include private demonstrations, discussions and exploration of the Museum after the program takes place. Join us for this two-hour bus tour that brings the past to life and immerses your students in the growth and history of Cincinnati through Cincinnati Museum Center’s Heritage Programs. $70 per tour for each bus.

Walk Over the Rhine! Presented by Cincinnati Heritage Programs Grades 9 through 12 September, October, April & May (weather permitting) Monday through Friday; 9 to 11 a.m. or 10 a.m. to Noon maximum 30 students per tour group

Visit downtown Cincinnati’s 19th-century German neighborhood and walk by Old St. Mary’s Church, Weilert’s Beer Garden, St. Francis Seraph Church, Emery Auditorium and the Germania building. Overnights at Museum Center Ever dream you’d be sleeping inside Union Terminal? Grab your sleeping bag and pillow and experience what USA Today called one of the top 10 Museum Overnights in the country. Pick one of our themes and spend the night exploring and learning at Museum Center. In the morning, enjoy breakfast and an OMNIMAX® film. Academic content standards are available upon request. $30 per person. 7 p.m. to 10 a.m. Caves Journey through our manmade replica limestone and ice caves and discover how cave ecosystems operate and thrive! Then play games, create cave-inspired art and meet bats and other animals that live in caves. Cincinnati in Motion - Explore Cincinnati’s urban development via a model of Cincinnati, circa 1900 to the 1940s, complete with working trains, trolleys and inclines. Get a closer look at some of our region’s most famous neighborhoods, including downtown, the West End, Mt. Adams, Price Hill, Over-the-Rhine and Northern Kentucky.

Cincinnati in Motion - Learn about life on the home front in Cincinnati during World War II. Discover how local businesses and industries converted to wartime production, how civilians helped and coped with the war effort and how Cincinnati citizens served their government at home and overseas.

Early Settlement - Trek through the woods of the Miami Purchase and encounter a surveyor working on mapping the land and the beginnings of Fort Washington. Learn about the interactions between traders, settlers and Native Americans and then rest-up at Dunlap Station, one of the farthest settlements from Fort Washington, to see how people lived on the fringe of the frontier.

Regional Capital - Rediscover Cincinnati as a center of education, religion, the arts and commerce. Step back into the early 1800s and hear boomers and boosters discuss Cincinnati’s early growth, successes and some of the issues facing the city. View works of art by Hiram Powers and John Caspar Wild and see how Cincinnati’s culture, religion and education flourished during this era. Try your hand at our interactive Canal Gallery and help move goods down the Miami Erie Canal with small boats, cargo and locks.

La Belle Riviere - Take a trip down the Ohio River and experience people travelling to and settling in Cincinnati during the early 19th century. Step on board a flatboat which has been pulled up onto the river bed and is being disassembled to build a house in our Flatbed Gallery. Try your hand at turning a flatboat into a home and while you’re at it, try on the clothes settlers would have worn!

Cincinnati History Museum (continued)

Queen City of the West - Pass through the galleries and experience a recreated section of the city as it appeared during the onset of the Civil War, representing the city’s busy commercial and industrial center. This exhibit features two galleries, Immigration and Public Landing, and is anchored by the Queen of the West, a full-sized steamboat docked on the riverfront. Kids’ Town - Walk into an interactive exhibit that includes a grocery store, post office, diner, veterinarian’s office and other places to imagine and pretend. Water Works - Make it rain, observe flood plains and control a river’s flow! Interact with hydraulic learning stations that demonstrate water as a force of nature and source of energy. Use the power of water to set machines in motion and test unique boat designs that encourage cooperation and problem-solving.

Animal Spot - Study specimens from Cincinnati Museum Center’s collections, learn about the needs of living creatures and discover how each living organism is intricately connected to its environment. Touch a cast of an elephant skull, feel a real dinosaur fossil, finish a three-layer fish puzzle, observe live fish and explore how animals move, live and eat.

Children Just Like Me - Look at life-size photos and representations of children’s homes from around the globe. Meet 11 children from around the globe, along with their families, houses, pets and friends. Discover their toys and make music by playing instruments from different countries. Focus on the commonalities that all cultures share and learn to value what makes each one of them unique.

Kids at Work - Put on your safety vest and step into a construction site that provides spaces to design and build a variety of structures. Work cooperatively to find tools, move rocks, finish a house or build a catenary arch. See how simple shapes work together to make more complex structures.

Energy Zone - Have a blast with ball-propelling stations that highlight cause and effect relationships, energy forces and simple and complex machines. Analyze which path a ball must take to reach its destination and determine the simple machines or energy forces that may help get it there.

The Woods - Hike into the wilderness and explore our indoor tree house, caves and crawling tubes that challenge your physical abilities and spark your imagination! Follow animal tracks, climb a rock wall and discover hidden treasures buried deep within the Earth’s layers.

Little Sprouts Farm - Learn about the natural world through activities that engage the senses, encourage physical development and stimulate thinking skills. For infants and toddlers up to 4 years old. Due to the intimate nature of this exhibit, Little Sprouts Farm is only available to groups between 9 and 10 a.m.

Get up close with our education animals including our colonies of Big Brown Bats and Madagascar hissing cockroaches, and learn how to properly collect and document natural items in Nature’s Trading Post. STEM Discovery Lab - Step into a science lab where you do the science! Use creative thinking and problem- solving skills to complete hands-on, inquiry-based science experiments and challenges individually or in teams. Discovery Lab classes feature STEM concepts like biology, chemistry, physics, sustainability and more. See class listings for details. Nature’s Trading Post - Explore the natural world through respectful observation and responsible item collecting. Bring in natural items like plants, shells, exoskeletons and fossils and tell us what you’ve learned about them. When booking your field trip, inform our staff if your group is interested in trading. Pathways to Change - Journey through four different cultural time periods spanning the Fort Ancient period to the 1990s. Explore the relationships and adaptations found in nature and discover the symbiotic relationships that we share with our environment. Preschool Sandplay - Bring your preschoolers to our coral reef Sandplay area for developmentally appropriate science activities and early childhood learning experiences. Designed for children five years and younger, accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

27 Earth Stories - Learn the ins and outs of museum operations in this audio exhibit that provides a behind-the- scenes peek at our collections and curatorial processes. Earth Works - Interact with this digital video exhibit that guides you on a virtual tour of the ancient earthwork complexes that were discovered throughout the Little Miami Valley in southwest Ohio.

Space Exhibit - See a replica of the flight suit worn by Astronaut Neil Armstrong aboard the Apollo 11 Mission and the tools used to collect samples of lunar soil. Armstrong presented Cincinnati Museum Center with the lunar sample located in this exhibit.

The Cave - Investigate the world beneath our feet through 500 feet of darkened passageways inside our man-made replica limestone cave. Walk on the advanced trail and experience a waterfall, underground streams, a formation chamber and the bat chamber, home to the Museum’s own Big Brown Bat colony! The beginner’s trail is wheelchair accessible and provides lookout points to the lower advanced trail.

The Science of Mummies - See how science unravels the story of Umi, the mummy of a young Egyptian boy. Learn about the elaborate painted cartonnage wrapped around his body and the 24 amulets hidden within the wrappings, revealed by CT scans taken at the UC College of Medicine/UC Physicians-Radiology.

Cincinnati’s Ice Age - Experience the Tri-State region as it was 19,000 years ago and interact with exhibit components to discover clues about the last great ice age. Don’t forget to stop by the Glacial Geology Room and learn how glaciers move, grow and help form the landscape. NEW! Climate Change & Us See global warming from a new perspective and learn how to minimize its effects in Climate Change & Us, a new exhibition space inside the Museum of Natural History & Science. This exhibit is #CincinnatiSmart and was made possible through our partnership with the University of Cincinnati.

Lost Voices - Visit our Paleo Lab and watch Museum staff prepare dinosaur bones and other items collected on recent digs. Meet some of the marine, flying and land-dwelling animals that lived during the Mesozoic Era. Some of our prized specimens include a pterosaur skull and wing and the only complete Apatosaurus skull.

Egg-cellent Eggs - Explore bird eggs and learn about their shapes, sizes, colors and nests through hands-on activities. Learn about the other animals that lay eggs and crack open an egg to find out what’s inside. From the Backyard to the Barnyard - Use puppets to investigate animals that might live in backyard or barnyard habitats. The Reasons for the Seasons ES Grades 1 through 5 Why are spring and summer warm while winter and fall are cool? Your Heart, Your Blood, Your Health ES Grades 2 through 6 Learn about how the heart is packaged, the way it works, the way it sounds, to which system it belongs and what it pumps. Get a closer look at capillaries, run a little race, test your food pyramid knowledge and share some giant microbes.

Experimenting with Physical Science ES Grades 3 through 6 What shapes do bubbles take? Does sound vibrate? Explore bubbles, sound, electricity, magnets, motion, light, color, mirrors and optical illusions in this inquiry- based program. Create hypotheses, perform experiments, draw conclusions and share your discoveries.

Tour the Solar System Grades 3 through 6 Soar through the solar system and marvel at recent images from Mercury, Neptune and beyond. Touch real meteorites and rocks of the type found on our Moon. Create impact craters and observe the crushing effects of air pressure.

Geology Rocks ES Grades 4 through 7 Transform into a geologist for the day! Learn all about rocks and minerals while viewing and handling impressive specimens from our collections. Test your knowledge of everyday uses of minerals then examine, test and classify specimens to learn their true identities. Chemistry in Your Hands ES Grades 4 through 8 Heat it up and cool it down! See and feel the evidence of physical versus chemical change. Watch your experiments change color as you create acids and bases. Learn chemistry basics and practice lab safety. Beware—the results you take home may be slimy! NEW! Exploring Nano Science ES Grades 4 through 8 From clothes to household products and computers, nanotechnology’s all around us. What’s nano science? It’s science on the scale of the nanometer, which is one billionth of a meter. Learn about how we use nano science to study things that are too small to see, like atoms and molecules. Complete up to six experiments and explore the behavior of atoms and molecules on the nano scale. Strong reading skills are necessary to follow directions and perform experiments. Science of the Dead Sea Scrolls—Then & Now! Grades 4 through 8 Learn about the science of the past and present involved in the Dead Sea Scrolls. Explore the history and science behind Iron Gall Ink and ancient and modern manuscript materials. Recreate a message using a concordance, the same method scholars from the Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College used in the past to recreate sections of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Taxonomic Detectives ES Grades 4 through 8 Classification isn’t as mysterious as it sounds! Start off with some simple classification activities, then use clues based on eye placement and teeth type to inspect real animal skulls. Read a dichotomous key to determine the skulls’ taxonomic order and species. ABC: Arches, Bridges & Construction ES Grades 5 through 8 Work in teams to build arches, a suspension bridge and a truss bridge you can crawl across. Learn about the components that make bridges sound structures, including anchors, beams and compression. Explore the concepts of live load, dead load and environmental stress. Forensics: The Science of Crime ES Grades 5 through 8 Analyze human skull replicas to determine the gender and ethnicity of a fictional victim. Combine clues from the skull with crime scene evidence to determine the identity of a missing person and speculate as to the cause of death. Program can be expanded to include human evolution. The North Star Tour Grades 3 through 4 The Underground Railroad was a term used for the covert network of people and places who assisted fugitive slaves as they escaped from slavery. Learn about how this network operated and discover the inspirational stories of those who escaped and risked their lives to secure the freedom of others. Building the Underground Railroad: Geography, Economics & Slavery Tour Grades 5 through 8 The roots of the Underground Railroad centered on the buying, selling and movement of enslaved human beings. Uncover how the Internal Slave Trade of the United States shaped the foundations of the movement known as the Underground Railroad.

45 The Civil War Tour Grades 5 through 8 What were the causes of the Civil War? While we may never come to a universal agreement, the war did help lead to the end of American Slavery. Find out how freedom was defined and about the individuals that risked their own lives to secure this freedom. Becoming a Modern-Day Freedom Fighter Tour Grades 8 through 12 Did you know that slavery did not really come to an end over 150 years ago? In fact, there are more people enslaved today in our world than in any other time in human history. Come and learn about how a historic Underground Railroad movement is needed today to finally eradicate modern-day slavery.

49 Learn More about Our Permanent Exhibits ESCAPE! Freedom Seekers and the Underground Railroad concentrates on the period between 1830 and 1865, and focuses on the brave and clever actions of men and women who resisted slavery. Brothers of the Borderland immerses guests in a thrilling flight to freedom, showcasing the courage and cooperation of John Parker and Rev. John Rankin as they aid a woman risking all to flee slavery. The Slave Pen, built in the early 1800s, was recovered from a farm in Mason County, KY, less than 60 miles from the Freedom Center. From Slavery to Freedom portrays three centuries of slavery from its introduction into the Americas to its abolition at the end of the American Civil War. Invisible: Slavery Today offers a comprehensive examination of slavery in the modern world. It explores the causes of slavery, the economic forces that have contributed to its growth, and the response of government, the justice system and the general public. Everyday Freedom Heroes celebrates individuals from all walks of life whose extraordinary choices at key moments paralleled the courageous actions taken by participants on the Underground Railroad. The Solomon Northup Tour was created specifically for the film12 Years a Slave and provides historical context for what Northup might have experienced in his time in slavery.
