GLENGUIN: HUNTER VALLEY, NSW

Glenguin Estate was first planted in 1988 and is close to the village of Broke in the Hunter Valley, home of Australia’s two oldest wine styles made from Semillon and Shiraz. In 1999 a few acres of Tannat was planted in ironstone soils on the hill at Glenguin. The vines at Glenguin average 20 years of age with a small plot of 50-year-old vines in Pokolbin. Sustainable viticulture has always been practiced at Glenguin. No pesticides are used and only fully biodegradable applications are made in the vineyard that is like a garden with native grasses growing between the vines

THE WINNERS TANK: LANGHORNE CREEK, SA

Winner’s Tank has been a recent phenomenon that highlights what can be accomplished when talented winemakers get their hands on some premium Langhorne Creek fruit. Winner’s Tank commenced in 2004 with Reid Bosward consulting on the project with winemaker David Knight. The name relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. In true Aussie Spirit, a strong rivalry exists between the three neighbouring towns in the local Australian Rules football competition. Each year the winning team heads out to the vineyard to paint the tank in their team colours.

BEAUTIFUL ISLE: DEVIOT, TAS

Beautiful Isle was inspired by Cynthea Semmens family vineyard on the Tamar River in Deviot, Tasmania. When her parents purchased the property in 1979 the front orchard was an abandoned pear/apple orchard which no longer shows signs of its heyday. A tribute to the vibrant and colourful Apple art of the 1930’s when Tasmania was THE Apple Isle. Now Tasmania is the wine isle! They want the wines to be fresh fun and exciting but not too costly. The wines are made seriously but not taken seriously!

DOMAINE SÉGUINOT BORDET: CHABLIS

Domaine Séguinot-Bordet dates from 1590 and is now managed by the young Jean-François Bordet who has recently taken over from his grandfather Roger Séguinot. Most of the 16 hectares of vineyards are located on the right bank of the Serein river benefiting from a perfect south / south-east exposition. Jean-François Bordet practises coolish fermentation and allows his wines to mature for 3-5 months on their lees; this maximises the contact and promotes a luscious style to the wines. His approach is clearly contemporary, but it delivers very stylish wines which fully express both the fruit and terroir.

LA POTAZZINE: TOSCANA

Potazzine is the Italian word for very colourful and vivacious birds which inhabit the Tuscan countryside. In Montalcino, grandparents and parents alike often use Potazzine as a term of endearment for children. In fact, it was their maternal grandmother who affectionately gave this nickname to Viola and Sofia who are the daughters of Gigliola Giannetti. The link with the two Potazzine not only features in the name of the winery, but also in its entire evolution. It was created in 1993, when Viola was born, and expanded by a further two hectares in 1996, when Sofia came along. This brought the total area registered for the production of Brunello and boasted by the estate today, to five hectares.
