Appointment of Science Technician Kelvinbridge

The Academy The Academy is the oldest continuously independent school in Glasgow. It is also a dynamic, forward-thinking, modern and friendly school which looks after the needs of around 1,530 young people aged 3-18, and employs around 250 staff. The Academy has occupied its Great Western Road site on the banks of the for well over a century. Its catchment area, however, extends well beyond the boundaries of the city, helped by the excellent transport links which the school enjoys. Kelvinbridge underground station and bus stops are within a few moments’ walk and the M8 motorway is only a quarter of a mile away.

We are passionate about developing the talents and potential of young people, and we seek to be constantly improving in the ways in which we do so. Central to this are academic and co-curricular excellence, and staff and pupils having a 'can do, will do' approach. We have high expectations of the children in our care, and we nurture them and believe in them so that they rise to those expectations. Our aim is to create a very purposeful, civilised, welcoming and mutually supportive community which both challenges children and develops in them the confidence and self-knowledge to succeed. We want each boy or girl to discover and develop his or her talents and to strive for high standards.

We encourage our young people to make the most of the outstanding opportunities on offer at , be they in scholarship, music, drama, sport, public speaking, outdoor activities, serving the community or clubs and societies. The Glasgow Academy is a happily busy, ordered and hard-working community, where we strive to put achievement, respect for each other and integrity at the centre of our life. We encourage our pupils to strive to succeed and to enjoy helping others and giving to the wider world.

We want our young people to be focused, well-rounded and above all happy individuals. We aim to develop in them the love of learning and the ability to think for themselves and to go on learning which will prepare them for the fast-changing world of their adult lives. We are concerned not with turning out types, but with enabling individuals to fulfil their individuality and with giving them the best possible start in life.

We very much value our partnerships with parents and the family feel of our school. The Academy is big enough to offer opportunities to all and to challenge even the exceptionally gifted, but small enough to be a very friendly community.

Science Technician

The school has invested over £25 million in new or improved facilities over about a decade: these include a Prep School building at Kelvinbridge opened in 2008, the new Saunders Centre Technology Building opened in 2015 (which won a series of architectural awards, including Best building in 2016), and hockey and rugby facilities used by Commonwealth Games teams. Our ambition is to be the very best we can be.

The Prep School We believe that we offer children a tremendous start to their education in our Preparatory School. They experience a caring, personal environment which blends the best traditional values with today’s most up-to-date teaching methods. The children benefit from specialist teaching in Art, Music, PE, Games, French/Spanish and Learning Support.

The Glasgow Academy’s Prep School operates on three sites: Kelvinbridge in the West End of the city, Milngavie and Newlands.

The pupils at Milngavie and Newlands transfer to the Kelvinbridge site at the end of Prep 4. Each of the sites has a slightly different ‘feel’, while sharing a harmonised curriculum and a common set of values and beliefs. The Prep School has excellent after-school and out-of-school care provision. This service, managed by our After-school Care Manager, provides ‘wrap-round’ care between 8.00am and 6.00pm at Milngavie and Kelvinbridge and from 7.30am to 6.00pm at Newlands.
