St Leonards Are Off to !!

St Leonards were crowned Ribble Valley Primary Schools Tag Rugby champions at Rugby Club on Friday in what was a superb advert for primary school sport.

The competition, in it’s eighth year, was jointly organised by Ribble Valley Council, the RFU and Clitheroe Rugby Club and attracted 16 teams together with teachers and supporters. Over 160 young players were in attendance in what is the borough’s largest junior rugby event.

St Leonards were dealt an early scare when they almost didn’t make it out of their group, only progressing due to tries scored. They edged out last year’s champions Pendle Primary School in the quarter finals 4-3 along with St Mary’s Langho, St Michael & St John’s and debutants Edisford Primary. St Michael & St John’s dramatically overcame a plucky St Mary’s side with a late winner to win 4-3 in the semi finals and St Leonards showed their strength by beating an unbeaten Edisford side – credit to the Clitheroe school for a strong showing on their first entry into the competition.

The final very tight with both schools scoring tries early on and no quarter given, however St Leonards strength slowly came to the fore and they secured the title of Primary School Tag Rugby champions late on in the game.

The Langho school now progress to the Tag Rugby finals where they will represent the Ribble Valley at Blackpool Sports Centre on the 19 th March.

Many thanks to the RFU and Clitheroe Rugby Club for providing volunteer referees who superbly ensured a fair and competitive competition throughout.

Clitheroe Rugby Club junior section train on a Sunday morning throughout the season at the club on Littlemoor Road from 10.15am and always welcome new players. Please visit the website for more information - http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/clitheroe/
