Confronting the Shadow: a Power Electronics Praxis Michael Blenkarn Confronting the Shadow: A Power Electronics Praxis Michael Blenkarn Doctor of Philosophy The International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University August 2019 Abstract Confronting the Shadow is a practice-led research project based on composition and recording in the Power Electronics music modality. The submission comprises seven albums and a written thesis. Power Electronics is a confrontational form of music practice situated within the noise music genre. The purpose of the research is to use this modality as a vehicle for exploring relations between noise, the urban space and mental health. As practice-led research, these relations are accounted for in a written thesis that has been structured to support and map the recorded material. The discursive methodology described by Somerville as postmodern emergence is employed to describe how the ideas and arguments made in the thesis component have emerged from the process of creating the portfolio. Key ideas incorporated in this manner throughout the thesis are adapted from the psychoanalytic works of Carl Gustav Jung, in particular his confrontation with the shadow. Jung’s ideas are explored in conjunction with material from musicology (Hegarty, Novak, Keenan, Attali), social policy (Barham, Moon, Kearns & Joseph, Laurance, the Schizophrenia Commission, Rethink Mental Illness), psychogeography (Sinclair, Raban, Vidler, Coverley), psychology (Laing & Esterson), film studies (Balsom & Peleg, Rabiger), and more, to create a nuanced multidisciplinary mapping of the portfolio and its interrogation of noise, the urban space and mental health. Emphasis is placed on the context of deinstitutionalisation – the socio- cultural and political transfer of mental healthcare from institutions to the community in the late 20th century – that transformed the experience of both the urban space and mental illness in this period. The portfolio and its supporting discourse explore the role that different kinds of creative practice such as music and film play in the generation and mediation of ideas and attitudes towards mental illness and its care, and demonstrate how the conclusions drawn from this analysis have informed the continuing development of the practice in consequence. i ii Acknowledgements To Alex, without whose unfailing love, support and patience throughout this endeavour, and indeed most things, would never have been possible. These ‘Angry Hoovers’ are for you. To my family, for their incredible moral (not to mention financial) support throughout all my years of study and the various career shifts and mishaps along the way; a special thanks to my dad, Rob, for introducing me to two of the key books I have used here, thereby helping me to find the right path. To the Durning family, who have given me such a warm welcome, and are yet to ask me to haud my wheesht. To my supervisory team of Will Edmondes and Ian Biddle, whose enthusiasm, encouragement and keen eyes and ears have been invaluable throughout the many incarnations of this work, as I found my voice and discovered what I wanted to say. To Adam and Andrea Brunn, who invited me along on their trip to explore the Elswick Lead Works site in the first place, catalysing much of the research that followed. To Saulius Bielskis, who mastered much of this music through goodwill, and has provided great feedback and encouragement throughout my chequered career in horrible noises. To Winston Smith of Unrest Productions and Karl Rogers of Fall Of Nature, for ironclad support, encouragement and for believing in my music enough to invest their hard-earned time and money in it. To Jamie and Joanna at Food Nation, who helped me to juggle work and study for many years and were equally supportive when I eventually decided I had to put study first. To Brooke Johnson, partner in crime through many years of friendship, musical misadventure and brainworms; and to all my bandmates over the years, for sharing of passions, travails and ridiculous antics. To the much-missed Steven Black, whose philosophy of life I can only aspire to; I wish you were here to share this moment, to puncture my pomposity and put things into perspective as you always did. To Gus the cat, who helped. iii iv Contents Abstract ...................................................................................................................................... i Acknowledgements .................................................................................................................. iii Contents ..................................................................................................................................... v Introduction .............................................................................................................................. 1 0.1 An Encounter with the Other ................................................................................................ 1 0.2 Noise and Mental Illness ...................................................................................................... 5 0.3 Modalities for Madness ........................................................................................................ 8 0.4 An Emergent Voice ............................................................................................................ 12 0.5 Jung at Heart ....................................................................................................................... 14 Chapter 1. Their groundbreaking 1999 debut full-length, Calculating Infinity, is inarguably the essential technical-metal talisman for the 21st century, melding hardcore's blinding rage with a musical vision that made most progressive-rock bands sound positively lazy by comparison.

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. POSTMODERN ORIENTALISM William Gibson, Cyberpunk and Japan A thesis presented in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand Leonard Patrick Sanders 2008 ABSTRACT Taking the works of William Gibson as its point of focus, this thesis considers cyberpunk’s expansion from an emphatically literary moment in the mid 1980s into a broader multimedia cultural phenomenon. It examines the representation of racial differences, and the formulation of global economic spaces and flows which structure the reception and production of cultural practices. These developments are construed in relation to ongoing debates around Japan’s identity and otherness in terms of both deviations from and congruities with the West (notably America). To account for these developments, this thesis adopts a theoretical framework informed by both postmodernism as the “cultural dominant” of late capitalism (Jameson), and orientalism, those discursive structures which produce the reified polarities of East versus West (Said). Cyberpunk thus exhibits the characteristics of an orientalised postmodernism, as it imagines a world in which multinational corporations characterised as Japanese zaibatsu control global economies, and the excess of accumulated garbage is figured in the trope of gomi. It is also postmodernised orientalism, in its nostalgic reconstruction of scenes from the residue of imperialism, its deployment of figures of “cross-ethnic representation” (Chow) like the Eurasian, and its expressions of a purely fantasmatic experience of the Orient, as in the evocation of cyberspace.

  • Woundsissue1.Pdf Download
Shit The Editor Says Welcome to the first “issue” of Wounds of the Earth. I started this thing on almost the very same date 6 years ago in 2006. That seems like such an impossibly long time ago now. When Wounds began, it was just a stu- pid website I had thrown together to showcase some local acts that I was friends with at the time, and to give them a platform to talk about the ideas behind their music. I had no master plan for it, I just knew I wanted to do something to help the music that I loved. After going through several phases, numerous contributors, and losing our .com website & a ton of old information, I’m still here trying to do what I can to promote good, pro- gressive music. I decided to try out the “actual magazine” format aftering reading one of my girlfriend’s old Gothic Beauty mags, ironically enough. Something about looking through the pages and seeing all the ads for in- dustrial labels when they were releasing good music, combined with the art and fashion stuff made me yearn for more material like that which brought together all the positive components of the culture and promoted it as one. It seems that everything in society is stuck in this “charge more, provide less” mindset - every business and service expects more from its clients while doing its best to provide whatever in an increasingly cheaper, more basic form. Fuck that. I knew that is what I was doing with the blog, no matter how I tried to rationalize it - giving less because it was easy, cheap, convenient.

  • Notes from the Underground: a Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music
Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Stephen Graham Goldsmiths College, University of London PhD 1 I declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Signed: …………………………………………………. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.
