Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2015 © 2015 Subhashini Kaligotla All rights reserved ABSTRACT Shiva’s Waterfront Temples: Reimagining the Sacred Architecture of India’s Deccan Region Subhashini Kaligotla This dissertation examines Deccan India’s earliest surviving stone constructions, which were founded during the 6th through the 8th centuries and are known for their unparalleled formal eclecticism. Whereas past scholarship explains their heterogeneous formal character as an organic outcome of the Deccan’s “borderland” location between north India and south India, my study challenges the very conceptualization of the Deccan temple within a binary taxonomy that recognizes only northern and southern temple types. Rejecting the passivity implied by the borderland metaphor, I emphasize the role of human agents—particularly architects and makers—in establishing a dialectic between the north Indian and the south Indian architectural systems in the Deccan’s built worlds and built spaces. Secondly, by adopting the Deccan temple cluster as an analytical category in its own right, the present work contributes to the still developing field of landscape studies of the premodern Deccan. I read traditional art-historical evidence—the built environment, sculpture, and stone and copperplate inscriptions—alongside discursive treatments of landscape cultures and phenomenological and experiential perspectives. As a result, I am able to present hitherto unexamined aspects of the cluster’s spatial arrangement: the interrelationships between structures and the ways those relationships influence ritual and processional movements, as well as the symbolic, locative, and organizing role played by water bodies. -

The following is the outline of the legend. Once there was a king named Vena, who was so impious that the sages slew him. Since he had no son, the sages churned the left hand of the wicked king . Then from the left hand came out a short and black barbarian Nisada. They then churned his right hand and great Prthu was born. Brahma consecrated him as the first king (adiraja), and in the midst of the ritual, two bards, Suta and Magadha were born to praise him. As a result of Vena's evil rule, people had been emaciated for want of food. In order to restore prosperity to them, taking up his bow and arrow, Prthu pursued the Earth who had assumed the form of a cow. Then the Earth begged for mercy and she entreated him to provide her with a calf so that she could give milk out of affection. After adopting Svayambhuva Manu as the calf, Prthu milked plants and vegetables from the Earth-cow on its own surface . Almost all of these elements occur in every version of the Prthu myth . Regarding his ancestor the texts differ from each other. That is, the texts of this story can be classified into three groups according to genealogical accounts of king Prthu. Dhruva the Ancient Indian Pole Star: Fixity, Rotation and Movement
Indian Journal of History of Science, 46.1 (2011) 23-39 DHRUVA THE ANCIENT INDIAN POLE STAR: FIXITY, ROTATION AND MOVEMENT R N IYENGAR* (Received 1 February 2010; revised 24 January 2011) Ancient historical layers of Hindu astronomy are explored in this paper with the help of the Purân.as and the Vedic texts. It is found that Dhruva as described in the Brahmân.d.a and the Vis.n.u purân.a was a star located at the tail of a celestial animal figure known as the Úiúumâra or the Dolphin. This constellation, which can be easily recognized as the modern Draco, is described vividly and accurately in the ancient texts. The body parts of the animal figure are made of fourteen stars, the last four of which including Dhruva on the tail are said to never set. The Taittirîya Âran.yaka text of the Kr.s.n.a-yajurveda school which is more ancient than the above Purân.as describes this constellation by the same name and lists fourteen stars the last among them being named Abhaya, equated with Dhruva, at the tail end of the figure. The accented Vedic text Ekâgni-kân.d.a of the same school recommends observation of Dhruva the fixed Pole Star during marriages. The above Vedic texts are more ancient than the Gr.hya-sûtra literature which was the basis for indologists to deny the existence of a fixed North Star during the Vedic period. However the various Purân.ic and Vedic textual evidence studied here for the first time, leads to the conclusion that in India for the Yajurvedic people Thuban (α-Draconis) was Dhruva the Pole Star c 2800 BC. -

10. 10. 2019 Narada - Wikipedia Narada Narada (Sanskrit: , Nārada) is a Vedic sage, famous in Hindu नारद Narada traditions as a traveling musician and storyteller, who carries news and enlightening wisdom.[1][2] He appears in a number of Hindu texts, notably Devarshi the Mahabharata telling yudhishtra the prahlada story the Ramayana as Messenger of Gods warning Ravan. as well as in the Puranas.[2] Once God decided that it was time for Him to descend to earth to set matters right, most lesser Gods came down too as someone or the other to aid and enjoy a ringside view of epochal events. He is also referred to as the king of all sages or rishis, meaning Rishiraj. He was gifted with the boon of knowledge, past, present and future. Once his knowledge became a hindrance in God's designs. He was therefore cursed that although he would tell the truth and warn people, they would never believe him. In Indian texts, Narada travels to distant worlds and realms (Sanskrit: lokas). He is depicted carrying a khartal (musical instrument) and tambura with the name Mahathi and is generally regarded as one of the great masters of the ancient musical instrument. This instrument is known by the name "mahathi"[3][4] which he uses to accompany his singing of hymns, prayers and mantras. In the Vaishnavism tradition of Hinduism, he is presented as a sage with devotion to Lord Vishnu. Narada is described as both wise and mischievous in some Sage Narada humorous tales. Vaishnav enthusiasts depict him as a pure, elevated soul Affiliation Devotee of Vishnu, who glorifies Vishnu through his devotional songs, singing the names Hari Deva and Narayana, and therein demonstrating bhakti yoga. -

Kåñëa consciousness is not intrinsic in these curriculum guidelines but we have tried to select the most efficient and least harmful methods and materials which should make the injection of spiritual principles easiest. By following the guidelines suggested here, you can be reasonably assured that you will meet all legal requirements, have a complete curriculum, and that the students will get a good education. Although this book follows a logical order from beginning to end, you can skip through and pick what is of most value to you. Additionally, a lot of important material can be found in the appendixes. New educational material is constantly being produced. Suppliers come and go. Therefore, some of this information is dated. Please update your copy of this guidebook regularly. Ekadasi is the eleventh day of the fifteen-days of the bright half (Sukla Paksha) and is also the eleventh day of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of the lunar month. In the Sukla Paksha the moon grows from new moon to full moon and in the following half it diminishes from full moon to new moon. Ekadasi day is auspicious to Lord Vishnu. The Ekadasi day that falls during the Sukla Paksha of Dhanurmasa/Margahi (December middle to January middle) is very special. On this day, it is believed, that the gates of Vaikuntha are ceremoniously open for devotees to enter. This day is celebrated as Vaikuntha (Abode of The Lord Sriman Narayana) Ekadasai in all the Vaishnava Temples. Stories from Puranas say that Lord Krishna discussed the special significance of Vaikuntha Ekadasi in one of His conversations with Yudhishthira. The Lord says that there is no better fasting day than the Ekadasai of the light fortnight of the Margazhi (Dhanurmasa) month. Who so ever is able to strictly observe this sacred Ekadasai, with worship, meditation, and fasting achieves complete liberation from the cycle of life and death. In some Vaishnava Temples, they have Vaikuntha Dwaram (special doors that are symbolic of the doors to Vaikuntha) and are kept open on Vaikuntha Ekadasai day. Pilgrims pass through this gate on this auspicious day. -

VAISHNAVISM : Vaishnavism is one particular tradition or denomination within Hinduism, which focuses on the worship of Vishnu. It has become very popular in Britain in the last sixty years due to the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement. Vaishnava worship is based on the Upanishads, the Vedas and the Puranas, especially the Bhagavad Gita and concentrates on the concept of bhakti (personal devotion). Worship often consists of praying specific mantras (for example ‘Hare Krishna’) and the practice of repetitive prayer known as ‘japa’. Some consider Shiva to be a Vaishnava, and one well-known picture shows Rama praying before Shiva, that is, an avatar of Krishna praying before the god Shiva. Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? – Jagadananda Das – The relationship of the Madhva-sampradaya to the Gaudiya Vaishnavas is one that has been sensitive for more than 200 years. Not only did it rear its head in the time of Baladeva Vidyabhushan, when the legitimacy of the Gaudiyas was challenged in Jaipur, but repeatedly since then. Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote in his 1892 work Mahaprabhura siksha that those who reject this connection are “the greatest enemies of Sri Krishna Chaitanya’s family of followers.” In subsequent years, nearly every scholar of Bengal Vaishnavism has cast his doubts on this connection including S. K. De, Surendranath Dasgupta, Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, Friedhelm Hardy and others. The degree to which these various authors reject this connection is different. According to Gaudiya tradition, Madhavendra Puri appeared in the 14th century. He was a guru of the Brahma or Madhva-sampradaya, one of the four (Brahma, Sri, Rudra and Sanaka) legitimate Vaishnava lineages of the Kali Yuga. Madhavendra’s disciple Isvara Puri took Sri Krishna Chaitanya as his disciple. The followers of Sri Chaitanya are thus members of the Madhva line. The authoritative sources for this identification with the Madhva lineage are principally four: Kavi Karnapura’s Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (1576), the writings of Gopala Guru Goswami from around the same time, Baladeva’s Prameya-ratnavali from the late 18th century, and anothe late 18th century work, Narahari’s
