Last month, three Buffalo congregations traveled together to Israel on a joint Buffalo Mission. Temple Beth Zion, Temple Beth Tzedek and Congregation Shir Shalom, along with their respective rabbis-- Rabbi Gary Pokras, Rabbi Perry Netter and Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein. These two pages include a message from Rabbi Pokras about the Mission, a poem by Rabbi Lazarus-Klein and photos by Robin Raphael and Marc Slonim. We will have more stories about this meaningful journey in upcoming Jewish Journals.

Dear Friends, Travel to Israel can be a remarkable and even transformative experience. I have been to Israel many times, but our Buffalo Community trip this Summer was unique in my experience. It’s not just that we learned so much about Israel, and had our own American Jewish assumptions and misconceptions challenged by our unusually talented guide, who I think is an educator of great ability. And it’s not the powerful emotional undercurrents that each person on the trip feels deep in our hearts, some of which we shared with each other during our farewell banquet. This trip was unique, and in the best possible ways, for several other reasons. First, we travelled as synagogues, but also as a community. To be honest, I was not sure how that would work. I wondered (before we left) how long it would take for us to ‘get on’ and then I wondered if we would. After only a couple of days I was delighted to observe how our preconceptions about each other’s synagogue communities had completely been forgotten, and how we had forged a new and special series of bonds as part of our larger Western New York Jewish community. I certainly hope that we will build on those connections to strengthen all of our synagogues and our larger community. Second, it was a real blessing to travel as part of a three rabbi team with Rabbi’s Alex Lazarus-Klein and Perry Netter. I enjoyed learning from my colleagues (and sharing my own bits) and I am sure that the participants benefited as well from our various bits of knowledge and our perspectives. This made for a very rich journey not only for the participants, but also for us as leaders. Third, thanks to the generous support of our local Jewish Federation, we were able to see first-hand how the funds we contribute through Federation is put to very good use in Israel, in really life-affirming ways. And in the middle of a tough and volatile neighborhood (the Middle East) we took tremendous pride in the many examples we encountered of people going to extraordinary lengths to help folks in need or otherwise at risk. For me that’s a real triple play, and I am grateful to be part of a community that operates in this way, and it is my hope that this is only the beginning of many more trips to come. Next year in Jerusalem!

10 www.jfedbflo.com | August 2015 Community Summer 2015 Jerusalem

By Rabbi Alex Lazarus-Klein

Over the sky of Jerusalem the sun exploded, literally - purples, blues, reds all combining.

The white buildings melding like a kaleidoscope with ripe, full color.

And then growing, growing with life and pleasure until settling over the old city.

There it stagnates, settles, and begins to boil.

The tourists struggle for shade, but even the shade is taking a time out.

Now the stones have become scarred. Their heat burns through the soles of our feet.

When will the sun set? When will the messiah come? We huddle inside the caves by the wall, like the ancient cave of Shimon Bar Yochai. Burying ourselves up to our necks didn’t seem like such a bad idea. We’ll plant a carob tree and wait.

Eventually the sun will go down and the Jerusalem sun will finally sleep before rising, magnificently, like a symphony in the morning sky.

18 www.jfedbflo.com | August 2015 Community must do all that we can to prevent this. While success, power, wealth, and fame seem idyllic, they should not be acquired at the cost of foregone friendships. Williamsville South, and Drama Club specifically have allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people with amazing stories. So much of that which I know I have learned from them, and they will continue to inspire me in everything that I do, and for that, I extend them my sincerest of gratitude. Our final lesson comes from Dorothy, who teaches us the importance of home. Yes, we are all about to part ways; we will be scattered across the country into our own brighter, more colorful, confusing and chaotic worlds, unsure of what mysteries may lie ahead. In doing this, we must remember to be rational and level-headed, to follow our hearts, to be strong and stand up for what we believe, and to remember that there will always be other people there looking out for us. If we do this, we are sure to find success in our futures, yet we must never let these futures cause us to lose sight of our past, of our time here in Williamsville and our time here at South. In the words of the great Wiz, “It is not enough to know where you’re going. You also have to know where you’re coming from.” Congratulations class of 2015”.
