  • How the Rolling Stones Amassed a Fortune Where Others Have Failed
How the Rolling Stones Amassed a Fortune Where Others Have Failed Last week Mick Jagger shared some video of his cardio workout routine. There he was dancing and moving to the music like only Mick can. Jagger was showing the world that, despite recent heart surgery, he is not slowing down. After years of hard touring and the excesses of the rock and roll lifestyle, Mick, Keith, and the rest of the Stones remain vital. During decades of near constant work, during which many of their contemporaries have failed, they have amassed fortunes. I described their investing process back in January of 2003. I wrote: Geezers in Wheelchairs… This year is the 40th anniversary of the world’s greatest rock & roll band—the Rolling Stones. Grizzled but game, the Stones truck on with their 15th North American tour. “Always precocious, the Stones at 60 look a lot like Segovia at 90: Keep the morgue on standby,” wrote the very funny Joe Queenan in the WSJ. The Stones are big business, real big business. As Fortune noted in its recent cover story, “The Stones have made more money than U2, or Springsteen, or Michael Jackson…or the Who—or whoever.” The topgrossing North American tour of all time was the Stones’ 1994 Voodoo Lounge tour. With a gross of over $120 million, these guys know how to make money and how to keep it. Jagger went to the London School of Economics. For me and perhaps for you, the really big news on the Stones is the recent hybrid (two layers) SACD release of the band’s pre-1971 material owned by Allen Klein and his ABKCO Records (the Stones’ longtime early label).

  • Introduction in Their Thirty Years Together, the Grateful Dead Forever
Introduction In their thirty years together, the Grateful Dead forever altered the way in which popular music is performed, recorded, heard, marketed, and shared. Founding members Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bob Weir took the name Grateful Dead in 1965, after incarnations as Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and The Warlocks. Despite significant changes in the band’s lineup, including the addition of Mickey Hart and the death of Ron McKernan, the band played together until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995. From the beginning, the Grateful Dead distinguished themselves by their preference for live performance, musical and business creativity, and an unprecedented dedication to their fans. Working musicians rather than rock stars, the Dead developed a distinctive sound while performing as latter-day American troubadours, bringing audio precision to their live performances and the spontaneity of live performances to their studio work. Side-stepping the established rules of the recording industry, the Dead took control of the production and distribution of their music. With a similar business savvy, they introduced strategic marketing innovations that strengthened the bond with their fans. This exhibition, the first extensive presentation of materials from the Grateful Dead Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, testifies to the enduring impact of the Grateful Dead and provides a glimpse into the social upheavals and awakenings of the late twentieth century—a transformative period that profoundly shaped our present cultural landscape. Amalie R. Rothschild, Fillmore East Marquee, December 1969. Courtesy Amalie R. Rothschild Beginnings The Grateful Dead began their musical journey in the San Francisco Bay Area at a pivotal time in American history, when the sensibilities of the Beat generation coincided with the spirit of the burgeoning hippie movement.

  • Bridges to Babylon Blessed Poison Here Is a Sketch of an Idea That Changed the Name of This Album from Blessed Poison to Bridges to Babylon
Bridges to Babylon Blessed Poison Here is a sketch of an idea that changed the name of this album from Blessed Poison to Bridges to Babylon. Mark Fisher’s sketch for the stage set's 150-foot cantilevered pontoon (the actual bridge was 160 feet long). This is the story of the tour that gave an album its name and its cover. Music Industry Economics In the old days the Stones would record an album and then do a tour to promote the album. That continued into the 80s and 90s when the Stones, like all bands, went on tour to promote their albums. They made their money through album sales. Set designer, Ray Winkler, said, “In the past it wasn't crucial to make large amounts of money from touring because record sales were very healthy, and that's how bands made their income. When that income stream diminished then bands wanted to increase their income stream from another perspective, and that was the touring perspective.” Technology changed the way we consumed music. Album covers became CD covers. People burned copies of CDs and shared them. Illegally sharing music with peer-to-peer file sharing software like Napster and downloading music all ate into record sales. Touring became a major source of revenue for bands. Then tours became spectaculars to grow the revenue even more. No longer were tours done to promote albums, albums were done to promote tours. Spectacular stages were an effective way of drawing crowds to concerts where the money made on tickets and merchandise supplemented record sales.

Bill Wyman begat Black Box. Allen Klein begat Metamorphosis, which vanquished Black Box. The Rolling Stones begat Made In The Shade. Necrophilia Metamorphosis is the album the Rolling Stones had nothing to do with and did not want to see released, it was also the culmination of a 3-year effort by the Stones to produce just such a compilation that began with Necrophilia. Hot Rocks 1964–1971 was a compilation album that had been released December 20, 1971 by London Records. It is also the best-selling release of the Stones’ career. In 1972, Andrew Loog Oldham, the Stones original manager, began compiling an album for release as the follow-up to Hot Rocks. It was entitled Necrophilia and it featured previously unreleased or, more accurately, discarded outtakes from the Stones' Decca/London period. Designed by Fabio Nicoli as a tri- gatefold album it used photos from Gered Menkowitz’s Between the Buttons photoshoot for the outer cover. The inside of the unreleased Necrophilia was recycled and used for the cover of More Hot Rocks (Big Hits and Fazed Cookies) in December 1972. 1. PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. In addition to hosting collection inventories and other information, www.publiccollectors.org includes digital collections that are suitable for web presentation, do not have a physical material analog, or are difficult or impossible to experience otherwise.
