2009 ASC Men’s Basketball All-Conference Teams, Awards Announced

RICHARDSON, –– senior forward Bryan Johnson and University of Mary Hardin-Baylor senior guard Tilmon Gaddy have been named division players of the year to AMERICAN headline the 2009 American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference and All- Division selections, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (March 3), following a vote of the SOUTHWEST league’s 15 head coaches.

CONFERENCE The 6-7 Johnson (Jackson, MS / East Central CC) averaged an ASC East Division-high 19.4 points per game and led the league with a 65.2 field goal percentage. He was ranked in the conference’s top 10 in offensive rebounds per game (2.2) and led the Choctaws to the title game of the ASC

Hardin-Simmons University East Texas Baptist University sophomore post Josh Chambers (Mexia, TX / MHS) was named East Division Defensive Player of the Year after averaging a league-high 2.3 blocked shots per game. LeTourneau University guard JeLani Mitchell (St. Martinville, LA / SMHS) earned top freshman honors in the East, while LeTourneau’s Vanwright was named top newcomer. LeTourneau senior forward Josh Louisiana College Davis (Longview, TX / Brookville), University of Texas at Dallas senior guard Ernest Lowery University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Spring, TX / Klein Collins HS) and LC’s Johnson all shared the division’s inaugural Sportsmanship McMurry University Athlete of the Year award. Texas-Dallas’ Terry Butterfield was named East Division Coach of the Mississippi College Year after guiding the Comets to conference and division titles.

University of the Ozarks Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Gaddy doubled as West Division Defensive Player of the Year after also grabbing a league-high 5.6 defensive rebounds per game. Howard Payne University guard Braden Sul Ross State University Irwin (Thorndale, TX / THS) was named West Division Freshman of the Year, while McMurry’s Walker took top newcomer honors. Howard Payne senior forward Tom Hermann (Fort Worth, TX / University of Texas at Dallas FW Christian HS) was named the first West Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. UMHB boss University of Texas at Tyler Ken DeWeese took his third straight division coach of the year honor after guiding the Cru to its third Texas Lutheran University consecutive season with at least 19 wins.
