OVERVIEW FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

In 2018, Res Artis turned 25 years old! To celebrate, we rolled out a year-long campaign of communications, stories, interviews and images that captured some of the highlights. Members contributed personal memories, first-hand insights from their artists in residence, and talked about the value and impact of being part of our growing international community. My talented team of staff collated this footage into a 15-minute documentary, featuring an interview with Founding President, Michael Haerdter. Please view here: https://vimeo.com/277096527

Our 25th anniversary was also celebrated in-person at the Res Artis conference held in Finnish Lapland. During Exploring Sustainability Under the Midnight Sun, around 180 participants from 30 counties discussed different aspects of sustainability under 24 hour daylight! In partnership with the Arts Promotion Center Finland and City of Rovaniemi, the intensive 3-day program focused on Indigenous residencies, ethical tourism, and intersections between the arts residencies field, science, technology, and the environment. Participants engaged with Sámi culture and undertook excursions to nearby arts residency centres, the Circle, and even met Santa Claus!

Last year Res Artis reached some impressive targets. In 2018 we welcomed 61 new members, taking our total network number to 719. We doubled the number of members in , and saw significant increase in the and also. This increase in members was reflected in our communications reach too. Our social media channels achieved increases of 1.6% for Facebook; 26% for Twitter; 21% for LinkedIn; and Instagram almost tripled its follower base. We communicated 1,218 open calls on behalf of our members, and did you know our website registered 3,918,039 overall page views?!

Such impressive and rapid growth in our network, requires the right tools. In 2018 we commenced work on new IT systems and a brand new website. The new site will retain our existing functionality, but will be enhanced by new capabilities. It will showcase our residency members in a more visual and easily navigated way.

To ensure diversity within the Res Artis Board to best serve our global membership, Res Artis welcomed 3 new Board Members in 2018. Artist, Curator and Founding Co-Director of Indonesia’s first contemporary art space, Mella Jaarsma (Netherlands/Indonesia); Clymene Christoforou, Director of D6: Culture in Transit (UK); and Frederik Hardvendel, Director of Danish Art Workshops, who hosted a Res Artis conference in 2017 (Denmark).

As the peak organisation for the arts residencies field, Res Artis is proud of the collective achievements of our organisation and network over the past 25 years. The field has grown and evolved exponentially during that time, and we look forward to remaining responsive to developments and achieving many more milestones with you. Res Artis exists because of our members, and we thank you for your support and the ongoing role you play in our journey.

Eliza Roberts Executive Director, Res Artis

Customised Services for our Members In addition to our general promotion efforts, we put a strong focus on providing our members with solid guidance and feedback regarding their Res Artis membership. The online survey revealed that online visibility is one of the most important aspects for our

members. As a service to our members, we carried out profile screenings for our entire membership base in order to provide our members’ profiles with an effective online positioning. For 89% of our members we saw possible improvements and gave individual advice on how to improve their Res Artis public profiles. Not only does a more complete and attractive page express professionality but several profile fields also translate into parameters for our search filter. Complete and detailed profiles better

position a page in our search engine and allow visitors to filter and find a residency.

- Res Artis Node: We also reactivated our Members Only Facebook Group, the Res Artis Node, encouraging our members to join and become active in this unique discussion platform bringing together colleagues in the artist residency field from all over the world. In 2015, the Res Artis Node counted around 300 members. Group topics were ranging from conferences and calls in the field of artist residencies, over resources concerning cultural mobility to discussions on structures of different residency places such as the special needs for writers in residence and the use of a residency garden.

Res Artis Artist Residency Handbook We launched a new edition of the Res Artis Artist Residency Handbook. The handbook provides emerging artist residencies with useful information on things to consider when starting an artist residency, while at the same time offering inspiration for improvement for more established organisations. It contains a multitude of examples we received from the Res Artis community providing our members with real-life experiences and hands on material from the field. The handbook is not for sale but only available to Res Artis members.

2018 Overview and Financial

Summary from the Treasurer

Dear Members and Patrons of Res Artis,

The fiscal year of 2018 was marked by the achievement of a remarkable milestone. We have

- moved out of negative figures and achieved a profit of €4,427.53. At the end of financial year 2018, we have a recorded positive equity of €830.12. Although the amount might be small, yet it reflected the encouraging result of our constant resolve to exercise financial prudence in managing expenses. Despite this achievement, we are aware of the constant challenge in sourcing for funding and 2018 is no exception. As such, the constant support from members and patrons remain critical to the continued success of Res Artis.

In relation, we have made a noteworthy growth in our membership income, with respect to the increase in membership fee. As compared to the previous year, we generated an increase of 22.1% in membership income. The details of our Profit and Loss Statement can be viewed in the Members Only section of our website: http://www.resartis.org/en/member_area/res_artis_facts__figures/financial_reports/

In addition, we also managed to achieve important targets such as increasing the salary of our Communications and Operations Manager; implementing a new website and IT systems; and expanding our reach through the MENASA Cluster office in Iran. These improvements will help us better serve our members.

I like to take this opportunity to thank all our Members, Patrons and Staff for their dedicated support to Res Artis.
