Thank you!

The last 2 weeks have seen our first two parents’ evenings of 2019 with both the year 11 evening and year 8 options’ evening extremely busy with mums and dads and the percentage attendance going through the roof. I can’t repeat enough times how important it is for our students to see how much their parents value education by attending and showing so much interest in learning progress at these events. Huge thank you to you all. Thank you too, for the many lovely comments and good wishes too that have come my way after my surprise announcement the other week. It has been a strange experience, but a very proud one, showing prospective candidates around our fantastic school and discussing my own job! Some of the stories surrounding my retirement have amused me greatly especially the ones from parents and other schools that I’m on my last legs and gravely ill! I am a very fit and healthy 61 year old and that is exactly why it is the right time for me to consider, hopefully, the remaining active and fun filled years of my existence by taking a well-earned break and leaving our school in a brilliant position for the next Head teacher to keep flying high.

Have a smashing weekend.

Mr Jones Head Teacher

Nicola Powell produced an outstanding piece of writing in preparation for her English Language GCSE exam. Mr Meadows was extremely impressed with her writing and awarded her a band 5! Well done Nicola.

Technology ‘evolving or devolving’? Evolving or devolving? Is the society that we live in slowly melting away into our phone screens, computers and television screens? I think so. Each year, technology stores are scabbing our money more and more on worthless, detrimental devices that are, slowly but surely, destroying our mental health. Nowadays, young kids are demanding the latest iPhone, whereas in the early 2000s, the best entertainment was smearing PVA glue on your hands and peeling off once dry! I understand that technology can allow distant family members to stay in contact, but social media also allows cyber-bullying – cowards hiding behind their screens, giving hate to others, leading to people despising their own lives. I believe that technology has evolved majorly over the years, going from flip-up phones to ‘unlock your iPhone XS max with your face identification’. Are you a phone lover? Spending hours per week, sat gormlessly staring at a screen, ruining your mental health? If you are, you should spend less time online, and you should get out of the house more (and not just to look for Pokémon on the beloved game ‘Pokémon Go!’. The online world that we love so much is ruining us up to the point where you walk around, watching everyone with drooped heads, phone in hand. 82% of doctors have said that technology is the main destroyer of your mental health, closely followed by drug abuse. Parents, how would you feel if your teenager was sent to a mental hospital, not from the consequences of drugs, but their latest Christmas present: their new 32” TV? Yes, technology has its cons, but I’m not denying that tech is all bad. Technology is a quick and easy way to be entertained; just by the click of a button. The amount of apps out there, swimming on people’s screens, allowing us to have all types of fun – from Netflix to Snapchat, the world’s most used app for contacting friends! One problem is that some apps do contain some long, boring, teeth-grinding ads… I’m sure that 98% of people listening to my speech have been forced to endure a 30 second ad on health diets, interrupting your game of Candy Crush! It’s the worst thing in the world! Social opportunities through advertisements are inferior to your parents’ childhood social lives. A local parent claimed “When we were your age, we didn’t have phones, we would have to go out and have fun!” Aside from the fun tech brings, I think that technology is evolving in a bad way, as more and more children and teens are being influenced by violent video games like Call of Duty. I believe our maddening mobiles and treacherous TVs should have time limits for 2 hours at a time, as our society is becoming more and more dependent on technology. To conclude, what’s your view? Is technology evolving or devolving the human race? Thank you for listening. By Nicola Powell Year 11

On Wednesday 6th February the Year 9 boys arrived for their 11-a-side encounter at Stanley. The atmosphere was tense, but there was adrenalin aplenty in the air.

The game started at a frenetic pace and after some ferocious midfield battles, Jake Lawton rose and netted with a superb glancing header. In the first half Callum Harding was superb in goal, Brogan Lees and Aaron Beyer-Kay were solid as centre backs and Lewis Vos and Zak Day-Johnson were outstanding at left and right back respectively. Half Time – 1-0 Meols Cop. The Half-Time talk was delivered by Mr Eley who praised the lads for their excellent teamwork and resilience.

In the second half Deacon Hall and Ryan Todhunter entered the fray. Ryan put in a selfless shift, he ran non-stop snapping at the heels of the Stanley centre backs alongside the excellent Billy Tootle. At a corner with 15 minutes left on the clock, Deacon Hall converted after a Mr Eley –inspired set piece. 2-0 Meols Cop.

The response from Stanley was instant. The Stanley centre half delivered an exquisite lob from 20 yards. 2-1 Meols Cop, 10 minutes remaining.

There followed some intense end-to-end football and with 2 minutes remaining Filip Miskiewicz smashed an unstoppable 25-yard shot into the top corner following a typically powerful run. Filip and Jack Johnston worked tirelessly throughout in the engine room of centre midfield.

Mr Walsh from Stanley, who officiated the game flawlessly, blew the whistle and there were sporting handshakes all round. A well-deserved and hard-fought 3-1 victory for the lads.

Congratulations to all involved: Callum Harding, Lewis Vos (vice-captain), Zak Day-Johnson, Brogan Lees, Aaron Beyer-Kay (captain), Fran Navarro, Nick Navarro, Filip Miskiewicz, Jack Johnston, Jake Lawton, Billy Tootle, Deacon Hall and Ryan Todhunter.
