Associate Editor Donation doesn’t discriminate! Due to the fact, that many in the LGBT community Ben Martin are not allowed to donate blood, it is a common misconception that they cannot be organ donors too. This is not tru e— Anyone can register to be an organ donor. Each organ is evaluated by our clinical staff at the appropriate time. Don’t rule yourself out! With over 117,000 individuals on the national waiting list for an organ transplant, it is our goal to maximize the potential for donation so that more lives can be saved.

OUR MISSION

Improving lives through organ,

eye and tissue donation.

OUR VISION

We envision a day when everyone

who needs a transplant will be

able to get one.

This was the first time that LifeShare participated in the Charlotte Pride parade. Our intent is to make sure everyone knows that donation does not discriminate and that no matter who you are, your age, race or who you love, you can still be an organ donor.

God, each day you give is precious; it’s a joyful thing to live! NATIONAL TOTAL 116,508 We are stewards of the wonders of these bodies that you give. North Carolina 2,861 In our heartbeats, in our breathing, in our walking, in our sight, We are blessed to be a blessing, and your grace is our delight. South Carolina 1,004

Yet when tragedy is sudden, when we’re faced with pain and death, Based on OPTN data as of Sept. 3, 2017. When a body is too broken to receive another breath, When it seems that none can cheer us, when a loved one is too ill, In these times when death is near us, life becomes more precious still.

We are grateful for the vision of the ones who have prepared: Who have made the firm decision that, in death, life must be shared, For when earthly bodies fail them, as they’re welcomed into heaven, Others here will know a blessing from the life these saints have given.

God, we thank you for the families who, in saying their good-byes, Seek to end their neighbors’ suffering, giving hope and changing lives-- And for resurrection glory, we give thanks and praises, too. Death can never end our story, for you’ll make us whole and new.

We are made to make a difference, we are made to laugh and dance, So we thank you for each person who receives a second chance. For they know that life is precious; they can see another dawn. They are blessed to be a blessing as the joy of life goes on.

Local churches promoting organ donation have permission for free use of this hymn. Tune: The Sacred Harp, 1844. Harm. James H. Wood, 195

WE PASSED!... WE ARE HAPPY TO REPORT WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN OUR ACCREDITATION FROM ASSOCIATION OF ORGANIZATIONS (AOPO). WE ARE STILL AWAITING WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATION OF  AMERICA (EBAA) AND THE UNITED NETWORK FOR ORGAN SHARING (UNOS). BUT WE ARE OPTIMISTIC WE WILL GOOD NEWS FROM THEM TOO.

The field of donation and transplantation is the most highly regulated field of medicine and at any time we know we are subject to inspection by any number of regulatory agencies, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In preparation, our staff works hard to make sure our charts are in order and that our policies are in line with local, state and national standards. "Accreditation and regulatory compliance can be challenging, but it is a valuable opportunity to ensure that we continue to serve our donors, their families and transplant recipients the best we possibly can. Our staff works diligently throughout the year to follow the guidelines and rules that were designed to make sure we maximize each precious gift,” said Sarah Seiler, LifeShare’s Chief Operating Officer. We would like to give special kudos to our Quality Department that works especially hard to get ready for site surveyors. They are: Brandy Dooley, Ericka Harrison and Christy Hudson. Those three inspections are over for now but we know it won’t be long before another one comes. When it does, we’ll be ready. We would like to give special kudos to our Quality Department that works especially hard to get ready for site surveyors.

fact Statistics from the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations in late July showed that out of 57 organ procurement organizations nationwide, LifeShare was the 5th busiest in the country. We are on track for 2017 to be our busiest year with more lives saved than ever before!

Five Marathons in Five Days The First Heart Transplant Run Takes Place November 1 2–16

Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Usain Bolt, the Road Runner, Steve Prefontaine, Ted Frank. What do they all have in common? They are all famous runners. Well almost. Dr. Ted Frank, the last person on the list, is better known for his work as a Transplant Surgeon and as the Medical Director of the Sanger Clinic Heart and Pulmonary Hypertension Program. Over the years, he has performed hundreds of heart transplants. Some of you are the beneficiaries of his work. Dr. Frank is always in search of a challenge. He has run over 30 marathons and ultramarathons as a seasoned long-distance runner. His latest challenge is to run five marathons in five days to raise funds to benefit the patients whose own endurance has inspired him. That’s a total of 131 miles! Each day, November 1 2–16, 2017, Dr. Frank will run a 26-mile course around noon starting at the fountain in Charlotte’s Freedom Park. He is asking people to join him to run OR to walk the last mile each day. He and his wife, Cynthia, are sponsoring the inaugural Heart Transplant Run, but they hope to get additional sponsors, both corporate and individual. 100% of the proceeds will be used to help heart transplant patients with their expenses. To see a cute video they created for the event, visit www.thehearttransplantrun.com. There, you can see Dr. Frank run, watch his beard grow and more importantly, learn more about how you can donate to the cause and/or join him in the last mile on one of the five days.
