Lister--source not identified: "George Embleton of the Parish of Wooler and Margaret Davidson of Berwick were married in this church by Banns this 28th day of July, 1802 by Hugh Hodgson, Vicar. This marriage was solemnized between George Embleton and Margaret Davidson, now Embleton in the presence of *John Darry and *Jane Bolton, Charles Embleton, Robert Davidson."

George Embleton and Margaret Davidson were married in 1802 in Eglingham, England in presence of Charles Embleton and Robert Davidson. They had ten children. Three children died in childhood. One daughter, Mary, married and stayed in England, and the remaining six children emigrated to Canada. George died in Wooler at age 56 years, and his wife Margaret died in Wooler at age 54 years. Ilderton Parish Bishops Transcripts: Thomas Herbert, Biddleston of the Parish of Allenton a batchelor and Isabella Embleton of the Haugh-Head of this parish, spinster, by Banns June 11. Witnesses: George Embleton, Elizabeth Reed, George Herbert. (Allenton was old name of Alwinton.) (The marriage information from Ewen Herbert of Victoria, Australia, who did research in England.) Thomas Herbert, his wife Isabella Embleton, and their children Margaret, age 12, Isabella, age 10, Robert, age 8, Mary, age 3, and Christina, age 1 year; together with Isabella's sisters Eleanor and Elizabeth Embleton, and brother Robert Embleton; and brother William Embleton and his wife Jane and two young sons George and James Embleton came to New Brunswick on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland in 1837. They were among the first settlers of Harvey Settlement. Thomas's occupation on arrival in NB was listed as Miller. Thomas first got Land Grant Lot #7W, first Tract, Harvey Settlement, 100 acres, and later added other property to his holdings. The 1861 Census shows that the Herberts had 300 acres of land--75 improved and 225 unimproved. Cash value of farm was 200 pounds, and value of implements and machinery was 15 pounds. They had 3 horses, 3 milch cows, 2 working oxen, 4 other neat cattle, 12 sheep, 2 swine, and slaughtered 350 lb. pork. They produced 150 lb. butter, 90 lb. cheese, 55 lb. wool, 15 ton hay, 15 bu. wheat, 300 bu. oats, 30 bu. buckwheat, 6 bu. peas, 5 bu. timothy, 12 bu. turnips and 80 bu. potatoes. Daughter Christina, age 1 year, is included in a listing of the family after they arrived in NB, but the 1851 Census does not list her (she would have been about 15 years old), so perhaps she died soon after their arrival in NB or sometime prior to 1851. (No record of her death.) 5. William Embleton. Son of George Embleton & Margaret Davidson. Born 28 Dec 1810 in Wooler, England. Christen 10 Mar 1811. Died 1 Dec 1875 in Harvey Sta. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. William and Jane with their sons George and James emigrated to New Brunswick in 1837 from Northumberland, England, with the first settlers of Harvey. They settled on Lot 5W, a hillside lot. The 1861 census lists William as a farmer/carpenter. He employed two males and one female, owned or occupied 30 acres improved land and 15 acres unimproved. Cash value of farm was 80 pounds, value of implements and machinery was 4 pounds. He had one horse, 2 milch cows, 3 other neat cattle, 10 sheep, 2 swine, and slaughtered 300 lb. pork. Produced 120 lb. butter, 25 lb. wool, 8 tons hay, 130 bu. oats, 60 bu. buckwheat and 60 bu. potatoes. William and Jane had ten children. Unsure who Jane's parents were, but it is quite possible that her father's name was James Runchman, and her mother's name was Cherry--maiden name unknown. There was a Cherry Runchman who immigrated to Harvey in 1842 with her son Edward Runchman and granddaughter Margaret Runchman. Cherry was born approximately 1774/1777 (Age in 1851 Census was 77 and age in 1861 census was 83 years) and died 13 Jan 1866, at age 88 years. They had the following children: 20 i. Eleanor came to NB in 1837 on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland with her sister and brother-in-law Isabell and Thomas Herbert and their five young children. Eleanor was 20 years old. Her sister Elizabeth, age 18, her brother Robert, age 16, and brother William Embleton with his wife Jane and two small children came to NB at the same time. There may have been another daughter, although she is not listed in 1851 or 1861 Census. 6 Elizabeth came to NB in 1837 on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland, with her sister and brother-in-law Isabell and Thomas Herbert and their five young children. Elizabeth was 18 years old. Her sister, Eleanor, age 20 years, and brother Robert, age 16 years, and brother William Embleton with his wife Jane and two small children came to NB at the same time. They were among the first settlers of Harvey Settlement. From N.B. Royal Gazette, 10 Feb 1841: "Married 4th inst., by Rev. Dr. Birkmyre, George Nesbit and Miss Elizabeth Embleton both of Kingsclear parish, York Co." From York Co NB Marriage Register B 1837-1850 (PANB): Witnesses to marriage were Robert Embleton and Margaret Herbert. From New Brunswick Courier, 30 Oct 1852: "Died Harvey Settlement, 3rd ult., Elizabeth, wife of George Nisbet, age 33; and on 13th, William, son of George Nisbet, infant." She married George Nesbitt, son of James Nesbitt & Elspeth, 4 Feb 1841 in St. Paul's Church, Fredericton By John Birkmyre, Presbyteria. Born 16 Feb 1816 in North., Eng. Died 1881/1891. Occupation Farmer. George at age 21 years came to NB on the brig "Cornelius of Sunderland" in 1837 with his widowed father James Nesbitt, sister Elspeth and brother James, and were among the first settlers of Harvey Settlement. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. (Another birth date for Robert is 22 Dec 1821, not sure which would be correct.) Robert came to NB in 1837 on the brig Cornelius of Sunderland, with his sister and brother-in-law Isabell and Thomas Herbert and their five young children. Robert was 16 years old. His sisters Elizabeth, age 18, and Eleanor, age 20, and brother William Embleton with his wife Jane and two small children came to NB at the same time. They were among the first settlers of Harvey Settlement. Robert and Betsy lived on Lot #13, second tier, in Harvey Settlement. The 1861 Census indicated they owned or occupied 45 acres improved and 105 acres unimproved land. Cash value of farm was 150 pounds, value of implements and machinery, 6 pounds. They had one horse, 3 milch cows, 2 working oxen, 3 other neat cattle, 8 sheep, and 3 swine. They slaughtered 400 lb. pork. Produced 200 lb. butter; 46 lb. wool; 16 tons hay; 200 bu. oats; 80 bu. buckwheat; 5 bu. timothy; 20 lb. clover seed; 100 bu. turnips; and 100 bu. potatoes. Robert and Betsy had eight children. Second Immigrant Generation ************************************************** 12. Margaret Ann Herbert. Daughter of Thomas Herbert & Isabel Embleton. Born 19 Jul 1825 in Haugh-Head, England. Christen 22 Aug 1825 in Wooler Presbyterian Church, Tower Hill, Eng. Died 10 Jan 1913 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. From York Co NB Marriage Register B 1837-1850 (PANB): Witnesses to marriage were Thomas Herbert and Robert Embleton.

From newspaper obituary - 1913: Mrs Margaret Little Harvey Station, Jan 13 -- Mrs Margaret Little, widow of David Little, and one of the oldest and most respected residents of this place, passed away on Friday morning after a short illness of bronchitis. She was in the 88th year of her age, but her mind and memory were unimpaired till the last. She was the oldest daughter of Thomas Herbert, one of the first settlers of Harvey and came here with her parents from Northumberland, England, in the year 1837. She resided with her husband on their farm at Little Settlement for nearly forty years and about twenty-eight years ago came to the Station, where she made her home every since. Her husband died about twenty years ago. She reared a large family, only four of whom survive her. They are Mrs Wm. E. Smith and Mrs M. Briggs, of this place, and Thomas and Eben of Coburn. She is also survived by about forty grandchildren. A considerable number of great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was a woman of strong character and much more than ordinary intelligence and of very amiable

8 disposition, and had a large circle of friends. She was always ready to help in times of trouble, both by word and deed and held a large place in the affections of the community. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended, despite the cold rainy weather which prevailed.

She married David Little, son of John Little & Janet Heughan, 8 Apr 1844 in Harvey Settlement By Daniel McCurdy, Presbyterian. Born 25 Aug 1816 in Dumfries, Scotland. Died 9 Oct 1892 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer. David Little came to NB in 1832 with his parents and siblings, and the family first settled in New Maryland, near Fredericton. David and his brothers moved to the Harvey area in the early 1840s and settled on land in the Little Settlement area, David and his wife Margaret settled on Lot D, in Coburn, and were farmers. David soon amassed a considerable amount of land--the 1861 Census shows that he owned or occupied 100 acres of improved land and 350 acres of unimproved land. The 1861 Census shows David as 45 years of age, Margaret as 39 years, and six children ranging in age from 16 years to 3 years of age. Two servants lived in their household, James Embleton, age 25, and Sarah Arbuckle, age 20 years. They had one horse, 5 milch cows, 2 working oxen, 5 other neat cattle, 45 sheep, 3 swine, and slaughtered 600 lb. pork. They produced 150 lb. butter, 110 lb. wool, 40 tons hay, 30 bu. wheat, 600 bu. oats, 50 bu. buckwheat, 10 bu. timothy, 50 bu. turnips, 100 bu. potatoes and 40 bu. carrots.

Last Will and Testament of David Little ( Probate Records F11788 PANB No. 444) Know all men by these presents that I David Little of the Parish of Manners Sutton, Co. York, and Province of New Brunswick, Farmer, being of sound disposing mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and Testament. 1st. I give and bequeath to my son David Allen the south side of the old homestead lot of land which he now occupies the bounds being placed by fences and well known. 2nd. I give and bequeath to my son Ebenezer Little the north side of the old homestead lot of land and also the south east triangle of a lot of land adjoining said homestead lot, said triangle being formed by a little brook on one side and two roads on the other sides containing about 5 or 6 acres more or less. 3rd. I give and bequeath to my son Thomas Little the lot of land known as the rear lot and on which the said Thomas Little now resides excepting the said South Eastern triangle willed to Ebenezer Little. 4th. Copied from a notebook kept by Ellie L. Skene, McAdam: An account of Harvey early, early settlers, told to me by Mrs James Little, Sr., York Mills. She said in the early days she and one of her sisters used to carry butter and eggs to Fredericton 25 miles from their home to exchange for groceries, etc. They would start early in the morning run all the way there and back until they came to a hill which they walked up, in order to get home before dark as they were so afraid of wolves which were at that time. Fifty miles over poor roads was a very long walk for one day. She also said her father, Thomas Herbert, had the first window in his cabin, which was a big event. He cut the frame with his jack knife and got the two or three panes of glass in Fredericton. Some of the farmers had to dig their potatoes up after planting for food. How very much we owe these brave uncomplaining first settlers in Harvey who worked so hard under such difficulties and made it so much easier for us, their descendants. -- Ellie L. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. Occupation Farmer/Miller. James and Belle first settled on Lot B, third tier, in Coburn, and later moved to York Mills. The 1861 Census shows James as 47 years old, farmer/miller, and Presbyterian. Isabella was 34 years of age, and they had eight children ranging in age from 13 years to 4 months. James Nesbit, age 19, cousin, miller, was living in their household. They owned or occupied 70 acres improved land and 80 acres unimproved land. Cash value of farm was 500 pounds, value of implements and machinery was 20 pounds. They had 3 horses, 4 milch cows, 4 working oxen, 4 other neat cattle, 12 sheep, 6 swine, and slaughtered 400 lb. pork. They produced 100 lb. butter, 48 lb. wool, 20 tons hay, 15 bu. wheat, 300 bu. oats, 2 bu. timothy and 60 bu. potatoes. James acquired quite a lot of land. Listed are the Land Grants which he received: Lot B, third tier, 100 acres 1842/01/17; W of 50 Little Sett, 50 acres 1858/02/05; 49 on NE Br Magaguadavic R. 50 acres 1862/08/21; 171 Block 31, 200 acres 1867/12/09; and on NE Magaguadavic R. Blk 31, 50 acres 1868/08/21. There were many other land transactions which are not listed here. James and Belle had ten children, and raised a foster daughter, Fanny Grass, who was born circa 1880, and was known as Fanny Little. (Fanny married John Parker of Magundy on 6 Jun 1906.) 14. Robert Herbert. Son of Thomas Herbert & Isabel Embleton. Born Approx 1829 in Eng. Died 1911 in St. Kilda, Australia. Buried in Bright Cemetery. Robert, at age 20 years, sailed from New York, USA aboard the ship "Revenue", and arrived in Melbourne, Australia 16th Oct 1852. Also on the same ship were James Nesbit, age 29 years, farmer, and his wife Isabella Craig, age 29 years. It is believed that when he arrived in Australia, Robert went to the Ovens District (N.E. Victoria) looking for gold, but didn't have much luck. He became a teacher in the Beechworth area and married one of his pupils who had nursed him when he was very ill. He and his family later moved to Melborne where he went into business as a timber and wood merchant (firewood, coke, coal, etc.) at St. Kilda, Melbourne.

11 His daughters were well know teachers, and they are buried with Robert and his wife. Another daughter is buried nearby. He married Emma Goldfinch, 13 Mar 1862 in Morses Creek, Australia. Born Approx 1845. Died 1923 in St. Kilda, Australia. Emma was married at the home of her parents, John Goldfinch and Emma Ing, at Morses Creek. This settlement became the township of Bright. 16. Mary Herbert. Daughter of Thomas Herbert & Isabel Embleton. Born 1 Feb 1834 in Colgate Hill, Parish Of Ilderton, England. Christen in Wooler Presbyterian Church, Tower Hill, Eng. Died 17 Jun 1915 in Harvey. Buried in Harvey Settlement Cemetery. In 1907 Mary travelled to British Columbia to visit sons Bob, Alex and Ken.

From newspaper obituary - 1915: Mrs Mary Robison The death at Harvey Station on the 17th of Mrs Mary Robison, widow of the late Marshall Robison, removes one of the most highly respected and oldest residents of this part of the country, being 81 years of age. She died at her home after a lingering and painful illness from gangrene. About four years ago it became necessary to have one leg amputated on account of this disease. In spite of this great affliction she continued to be quite active until about eight months ago, when gangrene became rooted in her other foot and gradually spread through her system, causing a very painful death. She was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thos Herbert, having come here with her parents from England in the year 1837, when she was but three years of age. She was a woman possessed of great kindliness, strength of character and executive ability, and never considered any task heavy when performed for those she loved. Of thirteen children, ten survive her. They are Andrew, William and Allan, of Harvey Station; Frederick, of New Haven, Mass.; Robert, Alexander and Kenneth, of Vancouver, BC; Mrs Robt. A. Little, of York Mills; Mrs John Dore, of Stockton Springs, and Mrs David G. Taylor, of Boston, Mass.

12 One sister, Mrs Jane Robison, of Harvey Station, also survives. The funeral services were held on Friday at her late home at 3.30 o'clock, the officiating clergyman being Rev. J. F. McKay, of Harvey Station.

The 1861 Census shows that Marshall owned or occupied 75 acres improved and 330 acres unimproved land. He had one horse, 6 milch cows, 4 other neat cattle, 12 sheep and 4 swine. It would appear that Christian was a common girl's name in the Herbert family in England. Her name was given as Christina in the list of the Herbert family who arrived in NB in 1837.

Copied from newspaper obituary: Samuel Ball Passed Suddenly At Harvey Was in Fredericton Yesterday--Dropped Dead While Talking to Friend. Friends in Fredericton, Saint John and Harvey will learn with regret of the sudden passing at Harvey Station this morning of Samuel Ball, a former employee of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Mr Ball, who had not been in good health for the past few years, was in Fredericton yesterday the guest of Ernest A. MacKay. He attended the morning and evening services at Saint Andrew's Presbyterian Church and drove home by automobile last night. This morning he was on his way to the post office and stopped to converse with a friend, Clifford Messer, when he dropped dead. Dr. B. H. Dougan was called as coroner and pronounced death due to natural causes. Mr Ball was a native of Hampton and lived for some years at Saint John. For the past six years he had been living at Harvey Station and since the death of his wife three years ago he made his home with Mrs William Hunter, a distant relative. He had no near relatives, a niece, Mrs Thomas Woodland, resides in Saint John. Mr Ball was about 68 years of age and had been employed by the C.P.R. for 48 years. About six years ago he retired on pension. While working for the C.P.R. he lost an arm in an accident and during the past couple of years had suffered several strokes. He was a man of kindly habits, well known and respected and his death will occasion sorrow. The body is resting at the home of Mrs Martha Little, a relative of Mr Ball's wife. While in Fredericton yesterday he was apparently in the best of health and when leaving for his home last night, spoke of coming back again soon.

William and Janie opened a general store in the village of Harvey shortly after they were married, which Janie continued to operate after the death of her husband, and the store was passed down through the generations to her granddaughter Margaret and Arthur Smith, who sold it upon their retirement. From newspaper obituary - 1944: Mrs W. W. E. Smith Dies in Harvey Station The death occurred last night at her home here of Mrs W. W. E. Smith, one of the oldest and best loved people in this section of York County, at the age of 94 years. Mrs Smith was born in Harvey Station, a daughter of the late David Little and Margaret Herbert and for 75 years conducted a general store here and was well known all through the district for her honesty and integrity and fair dealing with the public. She was an ardent member of St. Andrews United Church, active in all its work until age prevented her taking part. For the past five years she had made her home with her granddaughter, Mrs C. Arthur Smith. She was a life member of the W.M.S., a charter member of the W.A. and Red Cross and since the outbreak of the present war she had knit 100 pairs of socks in addition to much other work. She was a gracious lady, one whose companionship was sought by old and young alike and her death will occasion sincere sorrow. She is survived by a son, Louis Smith in Hillcrest, Alberta. Five daughters and two sons predeceased her. There are eight grandchildren including Donald Smith, M.B.E., Dartmouth, N.S. who will be here for the funeral tomorrow. The funeral takes place tomorrow afternoon from her late home with service at St.

Copied from undated newspaper obituary: Death of George Embleton The death of George Embleton of the Barony took place at his home at that place on the 19th ult., after a lingering illness, borne with christian patience and fortitude. Deceased had been in failing health for a number of years, and his end was not unlooked for. He leaves a widow, two sons and three daughters to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father. Church on Sabbath was very largely attended. There is much sympathy felt for the bereaved family. Mr Embleton was a member in full communion of the congregation and adorned the doctrines of God his Savior. He was in his 63rd year.

Copied from undated newspaper obituary: Prince William, Jan 9 -- The lamented death of Ann Arbuckle Embleton, relict of George Embleton of Barony, took place at her late home on the 22nd ult. Deceased had been in failing health for some months and the end was not unlooked for. During the last few days of her life she was tenderly cared for by her daughter, a graduate nurse of Lawrence, Mass. A circumstance which must have been a great comfort to the one, and a sweet consolation to the other. On Saturday after the devine service by Rev. Wm Ross, the remains were interred in the church yard, Barony. In the home the life of the deceased was brave, cheerful, beautiful, under severest tests and in the congregation she could always be depended upon as a warm, staunch friend and supporter. Two sons and three daughters mourn their great loss. Mrs Embleton was in her 68th year.

Obituary - Death of Mrs Thomas Embleton, 24 Dec 1915 The death occurred at Dumfries on December 24th, of Mrs Thomas Embleton, aged 69 years. The deceased had been ill for some months past and is survived by her husband, three sons: Fred in Missouri, William of Dumfries and David of Ludlow, Me. and one daughter Mrs S. Hazelton, in Alberta. The late Mrs Embleton was a native of Sunbury County and for many years seven sisters ruled seven households within seven miles along the St. John valley. The funeral took place on Sunday, December 26th, Miss Blanche Ebbett playing the Dead March from Saul as the body was being taken out of the church at the Barony.

Copied from newspaper obituary (undated): Mrs Michael Embleton McAdam, Mar 24 -- Many friends throughout the town learned with regret of the death of Mrs Michael Embleton which occurred at her late residence on Sunday after an illness of several months at the age of 64 years. Mrs Embleton had been a resident of McAdam for nearly twenty years and was held in the highest esteem. Of retiring disposition, she devoted her life to her family but was always ready to assist in anything for the betterment of the community. Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Mrs Irving Moffatt, of St. Stephen, and Mrs Hockins, of Ontario, and three sons, Fred Embleton and Allan Embleton, of McAdam and George Embleton, of York Mills; two sisters, Mrs William Lister of McAdam, and Mrs Davis of Brockway and two brothers, Albert and Joseph Thomas, of St. Stephen. From the Saint Croix Courier, 17 Apr 1917: A FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE COTTON MILL George Coffey met death while adjusting a belt to revolving pulley. Early Friday morning last, a sad accident occurred at the cottom mill, the victim being George Coffey one of the pioneer workers, his name being identified with those who were employed in the building of the mill in 1881. In connection with his work as carpenter, he had charge of the belting, and previous to the installing of the rope drive in 1908, he was frequently called upon to superintend the readjustment of the large driving belts. Since the above date, he had continued to readjust the belting in other parts of the mill. Friday morning about 7:45, he was called upon to adjust a five inch belt to a rapidly moving pulley in the dye house, which conveys power to a vacuum pump. He had ascended a ladder, and while standing on a platform was using a broom handle, holding it

25 against the side of the driving pulley. In some manner, the stick caught and broke, and it is presumed struck him a severe blow on the throat and side of the head, which hurled him to the floor, a distance of about eighteen feet. He was unconscious when picked up, and remained in this state until he passed away at Chipman Memorial Hospital about two hours after the accident. The deceased had many friends and was affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and Oddfellows and had been associated with the orange order. The funeral took place Monday afternoon with Rev. B. O. Hartman of the Methodist Church officiating. The bearers were, from the Knights of Pythias, Robert McIntosh, Byron Murphy, B. H. Trecartin, and from the Oddfellows of Calais, Maine, Charles Harris, Charles Barker and J. W. Thomas. A choir composed of F. S. Groves, Percy Smith, Mrs D. K. Harman and Miss Daisey Kerr, rendered appropriate selections. The deceased was aged sixty seven years and is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters, namely: Robert of Milltown, Fred of Newdale, Manitoba, George of Hamilton, Ontario, and David in the Canadian West, Miss Mable Coffey at home and Mrs George Green of Fredericton. His brothers who survive are James Coffey of Presque Isle, Richard and Henry of Harvey, and Fred of St. Stephen. One sister survives, Mrs George Moran of Boston. The floral offerings were many and very pretty and included set pieces from the Knights of Pythias, Oddfellows and the employees of the shops at the cotton mill. Interment was in the rural cemetery. Quiet in his manner but sincere and honest in all life's duties, Mr Coffey was justly held in sincere esteem and will be missed in many circles. THE INQUEST; Coroner Lawson and Maxwell Robinson were in town Monday afternoon and empanelled a jury composed of Harrison McAllister, Harry Haley, Raymond Johnson, Edward Farnham, Beverley Jordan, William Barter, and William Smith. They visited the scene of the accident to George Coffey and heard evidence from manager J. W. Graham, Percy Appleby, and John Fleming after which a verdict was rendered that death was purely accidental and that no blame was attached to anyone.

26 E. Embleton Dead. Well Known Resident of Harvey Station, Was Born in 1859. Harvey Station, March 20 -- The death of Elisha Embleton occurred at his home on Monday morning, March 13th. Although in failing health for several months, his condition was not considered serious until a week before his death when he suffered a severe heart attack. Mr Embleton was born here on April 4th, 1859, youngest member of the family of the late George and Elizabeth (Twizel) Embleton, who came to this country from the north of England among the early settlers of Harvey. He lived his entire life on the old Embleton homestead and was the last of his family, his wife Jane (Piercy), having predeceased him twenty-one years ago. He is survived by several nephews and nieces. He was a life-long and devoted member of the Presbyterian Church, from which the funeral was held at three o'clock after prayers at the home at 1.30, March 14th. The funeral service, which was largely attended was conducted by Rev. J. F. McKay, pastor of St. Paul's United Church, McAdam, former pastor of the Harvey charge and personal friend of the deceased. The choir beautifully rendered the hymns The Lord's My Shepherd; Safe In The Arms Of Jesus; and Good Night Here, Good Morning Up There. The pallbearers were Manzer Embleton, Irvine Embleton, James Johnston and Pembroke Little. Interment was made in the family lot in the Harvey Cemetery.

Despite her great age, Mrs Cessford is extraordinarily alert and in possession of all her faculties, and she exchanged many reminiscences and reciprocated the good wishes over the tea cups, both afternoon and evening. Historic Tea Cups And the tea cups themselves have almost as interesting a history as Mrs Cessford, for they were presented to her by the late Sir James Douglas, former Governor of British Columbia, and are of the capacious size beloved of early Victorian appetites! William moved to Fort Benton, Montana in 1881, and as soon as he got settled, his wife and two children moved to Montana. They had twelve children, ten born in Fort Benton. They adopted three children, and raised William's nephew, Roy Embleton, who was the son of William's brother Robert. William was a rancher. They moved to San Diego, California in 1917, where both William and Agnes died in 1922. From Daily Telegraph, 19 Apr 1878: "Married manse of St. Paul's, Fredericton, 16th inst., by Rev. Dr. Brooke, William R. Embleton and Miss Agnes M. Nesbitt, both of Manners Sutton, York Co." Witnesses to marriage were Frank F. Scott and Eliza Greer.

30 William R. Embleton -- A native of County York, New Brunswick, Canada, and born on February 14, 1852, Mr Embleton is the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Wilson) Embleton, both natives of England, who emigrated from their native country in early life to Frederickton, New Brunswick, where the father engaged in the occupation of farming, and where William attained manhood in County York, receiving his early education in the schools of Frederickton, but being able to attend only during the winters, as he was obliged to assist his father in the work of the farm. He continued on the farm, assisting in the labors and the management of the property until he was twenty-eight years old. Leaving the land of his nativity in 1880 he went to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and obtained a position with a government surveying party engaged in making surveys west of Winnipeg for the Canadian government, and remained in that employment during the succeeding summer. In the fall, however, he went to Fort Walsh, Canada, and in the winter of 1880 and 1881, from Fort Walsh he came to Fort Benton by means of a dog team over the snow, this being the only means of transportation. In 1881 he purchased the right of a squatter to the land where his ranch is located, and entered upon a successful life of ranching and stockgrowing. Mr Embleton was united in marriage in County York, NB, to Miss Agnes Nesbit, a native of that country and the daughter of George Nesbit, who was a native of England, and who had established his home in early life in New Brunswick. Upon founding his new home in Choteau county, Mr Embleton sent for his wife and two children, who had remained at their home in New Brunswick, and they came to Bismarck by rail and then by steamer up the Missouri. They were met at Cow island by Mr Embleton, and the remainder of the journey was made by team. Mr Embleton is counted as one of the substantial business men of his section of the county, and the family is highly respected. He is a stanch member of the Republican party, a loyal supporter of its principles, although he has never desired public office.

32 From newspaper obituary - 1934: Died Suddenly at Harvey Friends here and elsewhere will learn with regret of the sudden death at Harvey on Sunday of Luke Johnston, at the age of 74 years. Deceased was in his usual good health but was suddenly seized with an attack of acute indigestion and died almost immediately. He was well known and highly respected and is survived by a large family. The funeral took place this afternoon from his late home with interment at Harvey.

Buried in Riverside Cemetery. Matthew and Ellen moved to Fort Benton, Montana in 1899. They had three children, born in Harvey.

Copied from newspaper obituary - 1949: Chouteau County Resident For 50 Years Passes Away Matthew Piercy, of Loma, Passed Away At His Home Friday Night; Was 90 Years Of Age. Matthew Piercy, a resident of Chouteau County for more than a half century, passed away at his home a mile south of Loma on last Friday evening about 7:30. Mr Piercy had been in his usual good health, being a visitor in Fort Benton on Thursday with friends, Friday morning he did not feel too well and remained around the house and in the afternoon he became rather listless and drowsy and late in the afternoon slept quite a little and appeared to go into a semi-coma although he would rouse up and talk a little with his daughter and son. He slipped peacefully away at about 7:30 pm. Mr Piercy had lived a full and peaceful life, being a little past 90 years of age. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and his passing will be mourned by a large circle of friends throughout the country. He was born in Harvey Station, in New Brunswick, Canada, on April 10, 1859, where he grew to young manhood and was united in marriage to Ellen Embleton there on May 9, 1883. He moved with his family to Fort Benton in 1899, arriving here May 5th. He lived in Fort Benton and was employed for about eight years by the T. C. Power & Bro. Ltd., company and cared for the horses used by the company and operated the depot freight line for them. Leaving there he was employed for about two years by Wallace Chase as manager of their lumber yard. In 1911 he took up the present Piercy ranch as a homestead and has resided there continuously since. He retired from active work about ten years ago.

33 He leaves to mourn his passing two children, Alvan Piercy, of Loma, and Mrs Elizabeth Ross, of Seattle, who has been with him since 1943. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away in 1916 and by a son, Artell, who passed away in 1947. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Mrs Mark (Elizabeth Ross) Gabrielson of Seattle, and Mrs Richard (June Piercy) Ballinger, of Lancaster, California, and one great granddaughter, Christine Ballinger, of Lancaster, and by an older brother, Harry, of British Columbia, and a sister, Mrs Sarah Coburn of New Brunswick, Canada, and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Benton Funeral Home with Rev. Hugh S. Herbert, pastor of the Methodist Church conducting the services. Burial was made in the family plot at Riverside cemetery. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in the passing of this old time county resident.
