In his ‘Urbi et Orbi’ Christmas message the Pope renews his appeal to make vaccines available to all, especially to the most vulnerable A need for fraternity and hope in this time of darkness

In his Christmas message to the world highlighted the “various lights of hope” that are emerging despite the “darkness and uncertainty” s u r ro u n d- ing this moment in history, “marked by the ecological crisis and grave economic and social imbalances only worsened by the coronavirus pandemic”. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Holy Father gave his tradi- tional Urbi et Orbi address from the Hall of Benedictions rather than the central loggia of the Vatican Basilica. Speaking to the faithful throughout the world connected via various forms of media, he stressed the need for a fraternity that is not based on “fine words, abstract ideals or vague senti- ments”, but rather that is “grounded in genuine love”. In order to allow the hope of Christmas to illuminate the world, he said, we “cannot allow the various forms of nationalism closed in on themselves to pre- vent us from living as the truly human family that we are”. Nor can “radical indi- vidualism”, the law of the marketplace and patents “take precedence over the law of love and the health of humanity”. He re- newed his appeal to government leaders, businesses and international bodies, to en- sure that Covid-19 vaccines may be accessi- ble to all “especially for the most vulnera- ble and needy of all regions of the planet”. Turning his gaze upon the world, the Holy Father spoke about the sick, the unem- ployed, women who are victims of domes- tic violence, migrants, children who suffer, and countries around the world who en- dure conflict and natural disasters. During his homily on Christmas eve, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that Je- THE PHOTO GRAPH sus’ birth in a “lowly manger”, is a sign for all of us.
