Sandra Good, Health Administrator, Retires

It was a very special day on July 31, 2014 for Sandra Good departing Health Administrator. We honored a great lady.

Sandra Good officially retired from her position as Health Administrator after four decades of service to Snuneymuxw. She started as a Homemaker in the 1980’s and worked her way up through the years to Health Administrator, a position she kept for 18 years. During this time she did many wonderful things for families as well as made tough decisions for the community. Her help in getting the Health Centre Accredited with Health Canada was a great success. The Retirement Luncheon that was planned for her by the Health Staff was an amazing event! As Sandra arrived at the Community Kitchen she was applauded by her staff, Elders and community members present. The decorations were lovely with cedar, flowers and colourful ribbons. Phillis, a member of her staff, made a beautiful banner on behalf of the staff, saying “Thank You Sandra”. A beautiful beaded headband for Sandra was made by Connie for this special occasion. Sandra was blanketed and led to the centre of the floor by the SFN Dance Group and honored with song and dance by the group. Darren Good offered opening comments and shared the importance of honoring Sandra for her hard work. Members of Chief and Council were present and Erraylyn Thomas and Emmy Manson provided very moving comments thanking Sandra for her work with the Nation Individuals shared words of gratitude and acknowledgment of her work for the Nation. Sandra was thanked with a lovely gift of gold earrings from the Nation and many, many other gifts from friends, family and coworkers.

A beautiful cake was made for Sandra by Connie’s son Peter and was enjoyed by everyone. Sandra thanked Elders, staff, community members and her family for attending and she shared historical memories of her work with the Nation over the years.

Sandra commented, “I am so thankful for the retirement luncheon that honored me and my work with Snuneymuxw. This day was a very emo- tional but a happy one. I am so grateful to everyone who assisted in making this day special for me. It is a day that I will not forget. Thank you to Leslee for the co-ordination of the event and all the Health Staff for doing an awesome job preparing and decorating for this memorable day. I will miss them and everyone that I have worked with over the years.” Sandra is staying on as a Council member, so we will still have her wis- dom and guidance.

She will be leaving behind a fully accredited Health Center that is now ready to take on doctors and dentists and other professionals. Only one of the many dreams that Sandra put into place. We will miss her gentle consideration and her significant knowledge of the community and its families but she is not far away and we expect to see her often.

Thank you Sandy and congratulations on your retirement! See all the pictures at: www.snuneymuxw.ca/gallery/sandra-good-health-administrator-retires

A salad can be much more than a simple appetizer of ice- berg lettuce and cucumber

Adding protein and healthy fat to your salad helps your body digest the carbohydrates more slowly. With the right ingredients, you can enjoy salad as your main meal – a healthy lunch or dinner filled with sun-kissed local produce.

Making it a meal

A salad composed of vegetables, which are chock-full of vitamins, minerals and heart-healthy antioxidants, and are notoriously low in calories – about 25 calories per cup. Top up your salad’s nutritional power by following these three simple steps:

Start with carbohydrates

The good carbs listed below provide you with energy, fibre, vitamins and minerals – and they serve as excellent salad bases:

 Leafy greens such as romaine, arugula, kale and spinach

 Whole grains such as quinoa, brown rice and whole wheat pasta

 Shredded vegetable, such as cabbage, kohlrabi, carrots and beets

Top any of these choices with an array of vegetables and fruit.

Add your protein

Adding protein and fat to the salad helps your body digest the carbohydrates more slowly and give you a steady stream of energy:

 Lean meat: chicken or turkey breast, lean steak

 Lower-fat cheese: light cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, feta, goat cheese

 Legumes: kidney beans, lentils, chickpeas, white beans

 Eggs: hard boiled

 Soy products: cubed tofu, edamame

 Fish and seafood: tuna, salmon, shrimp, sardines

Finish with healthy fats

Like carbs, some fats are better than others. For heart health, use these options, which contain heart-healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fat:

 Salad dressing made from oil

 Avocado

 Nuts: almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans

 Seeds: pumpkin, sunflower, flax, sesame

Remember that high-fat foods are also loaded with calories, so add these toppings sparingly. Use 1-2 tablespoons of dressing, and no more than a ¼ cup of nuts or seeds. Bonus: Adding healthy fat to your salad helps your body absorb the vitamins and antioxi- dants found in the vegetables!

NOTICE: New Hydro Pole Placements

This notice is to notify all community members of upcoming Hydro pole additions at IR #1 along Centre Street, Totem Road and Woodhouse Street.

The new poles will be installed to accommodate the necessary wiring for the new community multi-use building and gymnasium. The new poles will be installed almost directly beside the existing poles but will be spaced 3 – 4 feet away. There will be no change in the line of direction the new poles will take; they will remain set within the road al- lowance.

The new pole and anchor locations will all be hand dug by B.C. Hydro’s contractor, “Dig Right”. Every new hole dug will have on-site archeological monitoring by Earl Manson.

There will be 2 – 3 line trucks on-site during the construction process and it is anticipated the entire new line installa- tions will take approximately 2 weeks beginning mid to late August.

Please be advised there will be some traffic congestion during the pole installations.

Did you know this about bed-bugs?

Bed bugs can move from home to home very quickly. Unfortunately many travel through USED furniture. They can also travel through luggage and clothing. This bug is by far the hardest to get rid of. Full cooperation from the tenant/home owner with the SFN professional service provider (B.C. Bed-bug Expert) will be the only way to get rid of this bug. If a home has bed-bugs it has to be super-heated to approximately 135 degrees Fahrenheit. Sprays or insecti- cides do not work; heat is the only way to eliminate this bug. On average, it costs SFN Housing $1000.00 to $1,500.00 for one (1) heat treatment. Please contact the Housing Department at 250-740-2300, if you suspect that you have bed bugs.

Pamela Little wins one gold and five silver medals at NAIG

Pamala, 14 years old, attended the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) Held on July 20-27 in Regina and took home six medals. What a great accomplishment! Dusan Toth-Szabo, Pamela’s swim coach, commented, “Pamela had been working really hard all year long to make Team BC for NAIG in swimming. Since she made the cut she became even more focused. She had to practice an extra three weeks after the season was officially over. At the end after all the hard work she came home with 1 gold and 5 silver medals. It was a great honour that she was able to represent the Ladysmith Orcas and her band at the games. She is the best in freestyle and shorter distances in breaststroke and butterfly. Her physical abilities are great. Hopefully she can continue on the same path in the future.” Pamela will be competing locally up and down the island in the short course (25m pools) through from September to December and then long course (50m pools) from January until June with her goal of getting AA times in her age group. Watch for Pamela’s progress and great things to come!
