COACH’S REPORT

HK&HDCA U/15 INDIAN TOUR REPORT

HK&HDCA sent an invitational U/15 rep. team on a development tour to India from 16 – 30 April 2006. Our touring team comprised members of the Hornsby Weblin Shield and U/15 IDCA teams, as well as some other players invited to make up the team. The 12 players on the tour were: Andrew Casey (Capt.), Chris Aldersley (v-c), Anuj Devalia, Tom Gurka, Alex Mihalyka, Richard Nash, Dean Norris, Taylor Paton, Jarrod Rixon, Dougal Robinson (w-k), Liam Robertson, Daniel Wood. Coach – Bruce Wood Manager – Bruce Rixon Accompanying parents on tour – Dr Joe Gurka, Jill Mihalyka, Wendy Paton.

The team arrived in on Monday, 17th April and stayed at the , Chinnaswamy Test Stadium. We were thrashed in our first match by a State side bolstered by some outstanding over-aged players.

The second game against the U/15 State team was a terrific match, resulting in our team falling short by just 5 runs. Our highlights were Tom Gurka’s 72 runs and Taylor Paton’s 5/46. After our third game on Friday 21st, we travelled to Mumbai and played against the MIG Bandra Cricket Academy U/15 team. We had our chances to win this match however we dropped 16 year old Ronan Tendulkar (Sachin’s nephew) twice before he reached 20. Tendulkar smashed our bowlers to all parts, scoring a match-winning 114 runs as well as taking 3/31.

The touring team travelled by coach to Pune and played against the Cadence Academy U/15 team and the Maharashtra U/15 State team, while staying at the Poona Cricket Club. In match 5, Tom Gurka bowled superbly to take 5/42 and Andrew Casey & Daniel Wood combined for a 97 run, 3rd wicket partnership, which set up a likely win. However after being 3/169, we inexplicably lost our last 8 wickets for 18 runs to lose by just one run.

Our team finally showed its true potential in match 6 against the Maharashtra U/15 State team, when we chased down 291 runs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Liam Robertson and Tom Gurka scored 80’s in a superb 111 run, 3rd wicket partnership, with Tom’s all-round performance earning him a prominent write-up in the national Indian Express newspaper. Our final game on tour was a re-match against Cadence Academy U/15 team and our team recorded a good 11 run win, with the highlight being an exciting hat-trick by fast bowler, Anuj Devalia.

The results / scores from our seven matches were as follows: Match 1 – HK&HDCA 103 (D. Robinson 19, T. Gurka 16) lost to Karnataka U/15-18 State team 0/107 Match 2 – HK&HDCA 226 (T. Gurka 72, D. Robinson 39, D. Wood 34, L. Robertson 30) lost to Karnataka U/15 State team 8/231 (T. Paton 5/46, R. Nash 2/16, A. Casey 3 catches) Match 3 – HK&HDCA 123 (L. Robertson 26, A. Mihalyka 22, T. Gurka 16) lost to Karnataka U/15 State team 6/249 (T. Gurka 2/43) Match 4 – HK&HDCA 9/170 (L. Robertson 49, A. Mihalyka 22) lost to MIG Bandra Cricket Academy U/15 team 247 (T. Paton 3/48, A. Casey 3 catches & a run out) Match 5 – HK&HDCA 187 (A. Casey 66, D. Wood 46, T. Gurka 19) lost to Cadence Academy U/15 team 188 (T. Gurka 5/42, R. Nash 2/6, D. Robinson 4 w-k catches) Match 6 – HK&HDCA 3/291 (L. Robertson 85, C. Aldersley 59, T. Gurka 87no, D. Wood 39no) def. Maharashtra U/15 State team 290 (T. Gurka 4/46, J. Rixon 2/25, D. Robinson 4 w-k catches) Match 7 – HK&HDCA 8/206 (A. Mihalyka 57, L. Robertson 48, T. Gurka 31, D. Wood 20) def. Cadence Academy U/15 team 195 (A. Devalia 4/26 [hat-trick], C. Aldersley 3/31, T. Gurka 2/30, D. Robinson 3 w-k catches)

Our leading batsmen were Tom Gurka (264 runs @ 44.0 average), Liam Robertson (247 runs @ 35.3 ave.), and Daniel Wood (159 runs @ 26.5). Andrew Casey, Chris Aldersley and Alex Mihalyka also hit half-centuries on tour.

Our bowling attack was led by Tom Gurka (13 wickets @ 15.1 ave.), off-spinner Taylor Paton (10 wickets @ 25.6), and Anuj Devalia (8 wickets @ 22.4). Richard Nash also chipped in with 5 wickets @ 18.0. Dougal Robinson (w-k) had a great tour behind the stumps, snaring 18 dismissals (14 catches, 1 stumping & 3 run outs). I also appreciated Dougal’s team spirit and his constant encouragement of the bowlers. Andrew Casey took 8 terrific outfield catches (mainly at mid-off) and achieved a run out, and Tom Gurka got 4 catches and 3 sharp run outs.

Andrew Casey learnt a lot as Captain and became more decisive as the tour progressed. I know he appreciated the honour of leading HK&HDCA’s first overseas touring team and he was a fine ambassador for our Association.

There are many people I wish to thank for making the tour possible. Firstly to Avinash Nichkawde for having the vision for an U/15 team to tour India, for assisting with the organisation of the tour itinerary and accommodation, and for funding the official HK&HDCA tour tracksuits. Thanks to Bruce Rixon (Manager) for his hard work and strong advocacy for our team in some difficult circumstances, Joe Gurka for being the Tour Doctor, photographer and for his wise counsel, and to Jill Mihalyka and Wendy Paton for scoring the matches, supervising the boys, and being such great company on tour.

Thanks to Jennie Rixon for compiling the Tour Diaries and Programs, and to Mark Rushton (HK&HDCA Rep. Secretary) for his support for this inaugural overseas cricket tour. Finally thanks to all the players for their efforts on the field and their camaraderie and good humour off the field. This tour was a wonderful opportunity for the players to play cricket in vastly different conditions and also experience the unique and contrasting culture of India. None of us will ever forget the warm welcome we received wherever we went in India, playing 3 matches on the Chinnaswamy Test Stadium in Bangalore, the amazing sights of the villages from the bus windows, the majestic Mysore Palace, or the hair-raising trips to the shops in the rickshaws!
