o Heritage Day and National Braai day

24 September, is a public holiday on which South Africans across the spectrum are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions, in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people. "Heritage has defined as "that which we inherit: the sum total of wild life and scenic parks, sites of scientific or historical importance, national monuments, historic buildings, works of art, literature and music, oral traditions and museum collections together with their documentation".

CELEBRATION OF HERITAGE DAY In 2005, a media campaign sought to "re-brand" the holiday as Organiser Jan National Braai Day, in recognition of the South African culinary tradition of holding informal backyard barbecues, or braais. Scannell announced that On 5 September 2007, Archbishop Desmond Tutu celebrated his the aim is not te appointment as patron of 's Barbecue Day, affirming it to be a unifying force in a divided country by donning an apron and have a mass tucking into a boerewors sausage. At the end of 2007 National Braai braai, but littler Day changed its name to Braai4Heritage and the initiative received the ones with friends endorsement of South Africa's National Heritage Council (NHC). and family.

Jan Scannell, the man behind National Braai Day, calls out South Africans to action on September 24th. Jan Scannell, resigned from his job at the end of 2005 to focus on National Braai Day. Jan's aim with celebrating National Braai Day every year on Heritage day, September 24th is to have one day where all South Africans are united around a braai, creating an annual day of celebration, nurturing and embracing a common South African culture, which is shared across all races and genders. Archbishop Desmond Tutu says in The Times in September 2008 : "As a meat lover, I urge that on Heritage Day people Braai4Heritage and share their meat with those who do not have". Jan had a great idea to bring South Africans together, once a year around a braai-fire to celebrate a country that’s worth to celebrating. Jan’s braai-website www.braai.com has many interesting braai-facts as well as amusing things waiting for you.

Weather for the week

Saterdagoggendmark

My dank aan hierdie drie. Judy

Famous quotes

Quote: Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

Who is Mark Twain Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn(1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel."

Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which provided the setting for Huckleberry Finn andTom Sawyer. After an apprenticeship with a printer, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to his older brother Orion's newspaper. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River before heading west to join Orion in Nevada. He referred humorously to his singular lack of success at mining, turning to journalism for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In 1865, his humorous story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" was published, based on a story he heard at Angels Hotel in Angels Camp California where he had spent some time as a miner. The short story brought international attention, even being translated to classic Greek. His wit and satire, in prose and in speech, earned praise from critics and peers, and he was a friend topresidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.

Though Twain earned a great deal of money from his writings and lectures, he invested in ventures that lost a great deal of money, notably the Paige Compositor, which failed because of its complexity and imprecision. In the wake of these financial setbacks he filed for protection from his creditors via bankruptcy, and with the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers eventually overcame his financial troubles. Twain chose to pay all his pre- bankruptcy creditors in full, though he had no responsibility to do this under the law. Twain was born shortly after a visit by Halley's Comet, and he predicted that he would "go Mark Twain out with it," too. He died the day following the comet's subsequent return. He was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age," and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature."

Calitzdorp Wine News from the wine cellars.

De Krans

De Krans one of the big sellers at the 2013 Nederburg Auction (Published on 11 September 2013)

The De Krans 1993 Cape Vintage Reserve Port was sold for a staggering R7 000 per six-bottle case (R1 167 per bottle, ex VAT) at this year’s Nederburg Auction which took place this past weekend in Paarl.

This was the highest price ever paid for a wine from the Klein Karoo at the Nederburg Auction and also one of the highlights at this year's auction, where R4.38 million's choice wines come under the

hammer.

According to Boets Nel, co-owner of De Krans, this was a wonderful tribute to the quality and especially the outstanding maturity potential of De Krans ports. This 20-year-old port, which in 1995 was sold at R35 per bottle, can also be considered an excellent investment with a growth of 3 334% over the past 18 years! According to Nel, this port has the potential to mature for at least another 10 to 20 years, because it still has enough fruit, combined with a solid structure that will ensure longevity. The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port is always produced in the drier style with a solid tannin structure to ensure this good aging. This flagship port wines are released only in the best harvest years and are prepared in the traditional way of Portuguese grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz and Souzão.

Throughout the years De Krans has produced premium ports recognised throughout the world as well as awarded sought after accolades, such as the SA Champion Port at the 2012 SA Young Wine Show and several five-star ratings in the esteemed Platter's Wine Guide.

Adding to its list of accolades De Krans was recently awarded three gold and three silver medals at the 2013 Michelangelo International Wine Awards, which were announced on Friday, 6 September. The three gold medals were for the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2009, The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010 and Shiraz 2011.

Names as used in Sasol – The Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern Africa: 2nd edition 2005.

ID: 81 Species: Hamerkop Spotted: Recorded January –

December, resident. Hamerkop

The Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta), also known as Hammerkop,Hammerkopf, Hammerhead, Hammerhead Stork, Umbrette, Umber Bird,Tufted Umber, or Anvilhead, is a medium-sized wading bird (56 cm long, weighing 470 g). The shape of its head with a curved bill and crest at the back is reminiscent of a hammer, hence its name. It ranges from Africa, Madagascarto Arabia, in wetlands of a wide variety, including estuaries, lakesides, fish pond, riverbanks and rocky coasts in Tanzania. The Hamerkop, which is asedentary bird that often show local movements, is not globally threatened and is locally abundant in Africa and Madagascar.

TAXONOMY AND SYSTEMATICS The Hamerkop is usually included in the Ciconiiformes, but might be closer to the Pelecaniformes. It constitutes a family (Scopidae) and genus (Scopus) all on its own because of its unique characteristics.

SUBSPECIES There are two subspecies, Scopus umbretta umbretta and Scopus umbreta minor.

 S. u. umbretta, live in most of tropical Africa, southwest Arabia andMadagascar.  S. u. minor, found in coastal belt from Sierra Leone to east Nigeria.

DESCRIPTION Its plumage is a drab brown with purple iridescence on the back (the subspecies S. u. minoris darker). The bill is long, flat, and slightly hooked. The neck and legs are shorter than those of most of the Ciconiiformes. The Hamerkop has partially webbed feet, for unknown reasons. It middle toe is comb-like (pectinated) like a heron's. Its tail is short and its wings are big, wide, and round-tipped; it soars well. When it does so, it stretches its neck forward like a stork or ibis, but when it flaps, it coils its neck back something like a heron. Vocalisations include cackles and a shrill call given in flight. Hamerkops are mostly silent except when in groups.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT The Hamerkop occurs in Africa south of the Sahara, Madagascar and coastal southwestArabia in all wetland habitats, including irrigated land such as rice paddies, as well as in savannas and forests. Most remain sedentary in their territories, which are held by pairs, but some move into suitable habitat during the wet season only. Whenever people create new bodies of water with dams or canals, Hamerkops move in quickly.

BEHAVIOUR AND ECOLOGY The Hamerkop's behavior is unlike other birds. One unusual feature is that up to ten birds join in "ceremonies" in which they run circles around each other, all calling loudly, raising their crests, fluttering their wings. Another is "false mounting", in which one bird stands on top of another and appears to mount it, but they may not be mates and do not copulate.

BREEDING The strangest aspect of Hamerkop behavior is the huge nest, sometimes more than 1.5 m across, comprising perhaps 10,000 sticks and strong enough to support a man's weight. The birds decorate the outside with any bright-coloured objects they can find. When possible, they build the nest in the fork of a tree, often over water, but if necessary they build on a bank, a cliff, a human-built wall or dam, or on the ground. A pair starts by making a platform of sticks held together with mud, then builds walls and a domed roof. A mud-plastered entrance 13 to 18 cm wide in the bottom leads through a tunnel up to 60 cm long to a nesting chamber big enough for the parents and young. These birds are compulsive nest builders, constructing 3 to 5 nests per year whether they are breeding or not. Barn Owls and eagle owls may force them out and take over the nests, but when the owls leave, the Hammerkops may reuse the nests. Snakes, small mammals such as genets, and various birds live in abandoned nests, and weaver birds, mynas, and pigeons may attach their nests to the outside. At the finished nest, a pair gives displays similar to those of the group ceremonies and mates, often on top of the nest. The clutch consists of 3 to 7 eggs that start white but soon become stained. Both sexes incubate for 28 to 30 days. Both feed the young, often leaving them alone for long times; this unusual habit for wading birds may be made possible by the thick nest walls. The young hatch covered with gray down. By 17 days after hatching, their head and crest plumage is developed, and in a month, their body plumage. They leave the nest at 44 to 50 days but roost in it at night until about two months after hatching.

FOOD AND FEEDING Hamerkops feed during the day, often taking a break at noon to roost. They normally feed alone or in pairs. The food is typical of long-legged wading birds, and the most important is amphibians. They also eat fish, shrimp, insects and rodents. They walk in shallow water looking for prey, shuffling one foot at a time on the bottom or suddenly opening their wings to flush prey out of hiding. The same shuffling technique is used to locate food in middens of fish remains.

IN CULTURE

There are many legends about the Hamerkop. In some regions, people state that other birds help it build its nest. The ǀXaminformants of Wilhelm Bleek said that when a Hamerkop flew and called over their camp, they knew that someone close to them had died. It is known in some cultures as the lightning bird, and the Kalahari Bushmen believe or believed that being hit by lightning resulted from trying to rob a Hamerkop's nest. They also believe that the inimical god Khauna would not like anyone to kill a Hamerkop. According to an old Malagasy belief, anyone who destroys its nest will get leprosy, and a Malagasy poem calls it an "evil bird". Such beliefs have given the bird some protection. Scopus, a database of abstracts and citations for scholarly journal articles, received its name in honor of this bird, as the Hamerkop is renowned for its superior navigation skills.
