For some years now there have been small numbers of the Friends of Butchers Gap for their bird hide and Banded Lapwing reported in paddocks in the Port information shelter and to the Robe Coastcare Group for MacDonnell/Eight Mile Creek area. This year Gwen saw 7 at their bird hide. the corner of Bay Road and Lithgow’s Road on 1st June. Work is continuing on the bird hide at Danger Point. The Nesting was reported in early September and, on the 11th, attached photo was taken at a recent visit by members of we recorded 3 pairs. One pair had 3 chicks, the second pair the South East Local Government Association. Since then had 2 chicks and the third pair were still nesting. On 5th the roof has been put on, the boardwalk completed and October there was only one pair present – they appeared to shrubs, grown from locally collected seed, have been have a nest. The fate of the three families observed in planted. Wall panels are being constructed off site by the September is unknown. It was obvious that heavy Highways to Construction team at Grant High School and machinery had been in the paddock recently – with unknown should be ready soon consequences for the Lapwing families. Chicks and eggs could easily have been crushed, although the earliest hatched chicks could have easily fledged before the ground dried out sufficiently for the tractor to get into the paddock. I would appreciate any information that can help solve this mystery! Wader Notes would not be complete without a reference to the continuing Banded Stilt story ...... there is an easily observed flock feeding and roosting in the pools beside the Loop road near Salt Creek. There are harder to observe groups scattered around the ephemeral between Tea Tree Crossing and Kingston. Reece reports that there is still no news of A7, last reported in the Lake McIntyre/Lake Nadzab area. Both of these lakes are full to overflowing with water at the moment, perhaps when they dry out we can undertake a search of the lake bed in case the stilt has died or the transmitter shed. A9 has just arrived from further north, and the last fix Reece has places it around about were BirdLife SE SA members had a flock of between 113,400 – 151,200 on 1.10.2005!!
