On the Cover ON THE COVER The 2018 College Football Hall of Fame Class will officially be inducted during the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner Dec. 4 at the New York Hilton Midtown. Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia) and Coaches Frank Beamer and Mack Brown represented the 2018 Class after the announcement at the CFP National Championship while Charles Woodson (Michigan) was surprised as a member of the class the day before on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. Look inside for the candidates for the 2019 Class and vote for your top selections. CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE FROM ARCHIE MANNING Dear Members and College Football Friends: Welcome to the National Football Foundation’s 2019 College Football Hall of Fame Ballot. Induction into the College Football Hall of Fame represents the pinnacle of achievement in our sport, and the Hall of Fame serves as the centerpiece of the NFF’s efforts to inspire future generations to greatness. We are proud to solicit your vote as part of the selection process. Your passion and insights play an important role in helping us determine who will join this elite fraternity, and we truly appreciate your participation in this revered tradition, which stretches back to 1951. We are continuing with our electronic voting system, which has significantly increased participation. The voting link can be found throughout this issue. Please email [email protected] if you have questions. You have until Friday, June 22, to vote. As you peruse the ballot, please keep in mind that of the 5.26 million who have played college football since the first game on Nov. 6, 1869, only 997 players and 217 coaches have been inducted, including the 2018 class. In other words, less than two one-hundredths of a percent (.02%) of those who have participated can call themselves a College Football Hall of Famer. We employ a rigorous set of objective standards to identify only the most worthy candidates, and the criteria limits us to a pool of approximately 1,500 First Team All-Americans. A district screening system further culls the list to the names you find on the ballot. As you can see, just being on the ballot is a huge honor, and all of the names seen here rank among the greatest players to ever set foot on the collegiate gridiron. The membership vote plays an important role, providing key insights to the NFF Honors Court, which makes the final decision on the inductees. So, please cast your vote by June 22. The announcement of the 2019 Class will be made Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, in Santa Clara, Calif., the host city for the College Football Playoff (CFP) National Championship, which will be played later that day at Levi’s® Stadium. Several of the inductees will be on site to represent the class and share their thoughts on the honor of being selected. The Jan. 7 announcement will be televised live, and specific viewing information will be available as the date draws near. A few of the new inductees also will participate in the pregame festivities and the coin toss of the title game. Since 2015, the NFF has partnered with the CFP to announce the new inductees around the National Championship in the host city. Our presence at the title game has significantly raised the profile of the announcement, and we would like to extend a big thank you to CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock and his staff for their continued support. During the 2019 season, members of the Hall of Fame class will participate in numerous activities to further celebrate their accomplishments. First, throughout the fall, each inductee will be honored on the field at his respective school with an NFF On-Campus Salute, presented by Fidelity Investments. The formal induction ceremony will follow on Dec. 10, 2019, during the 62nd NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the New York Hilton Midtown. Thank you for voting in this very special tradition and submitting your College Football Hall of Fame ballot. Again, please be sure to cast your vote by Friday, June 22. Kind regards, Archie Manning Chairman of the Board 1989 College Football Hall of Fame Inductee SUPPORT THE NFF Your support and attendance at the many NFF events throughout the year means a lot, and we would ask that you consider supplementing your support with a financial gift. • Why New Quarterback Joe Flacco Gets the Broncos Back in the NFL Playoff Conversation by Mark Kiszla Denver Post June 5, 2019
Kiszla: Why new quarterback Joe Flacco gets the Broncos back in the NFL playoff conversation By Mark Kiszla Denver Post June 5, 2019 Flacco has never thrown for more than 27 touchdowns in any of his 11 previous seasons in the NFL and has topped 4,000 passing yards only once in his career. New Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco stinks … if you believe all the power rankings of quarterbacks on the internet. Those ratings suggest he is Trent Dilfer 2.0, at best. But like most of what you read on Twitter, the instant analysis of Flacco is for the birds. When Flacco drops back to pass, he earns respect without uttering a word, by displaying a gift that’s rare, even at the NFL level. “He can throw the ball 80 yards, easy,” Broncos linebacker Von Miller said Tuesday, marveling at a mighty heave Flacco unleashed during practice. “He threw it 80 yards across the field. He’s looking like a Super Bowl MVP to me.” Game knows game. And unlike a year ago, when Broncos teammates mightily tried to prop up Case Keenum as a quarterback to be trusted, Flacco’s arm talent has done the talking during spring workouts at Dove Valley Headquarters. “That man has a cannon, I can tell you that,” Denver defensive lineman Shelby Harris said last week. “That man can really throw the ball.” Game knows game. For example: When I asked Flacco how he can tell Miller is a special player, he replied: “I’ve been around a lot of good guys on defense, for most of my career, as you guys know.
