LMSC State Cup Honor Roll 19 the championship game, the Lightning defeated the Ukrainian Nationals 4-0.

Lightning head coach Adrian Cox became the first person in club history to win a state championship as both a player and head coach. Adrian was a member of the Under 13 state champion Lower Merion Gorillas back in 1990.

Page 1 LIGHTNING CROWNED STATE CUP CHAMPIONS

On Saturday, May 19, the Lower Merion Lightning (Under 10A boys) defeated the Ukrainian Nationals 4-0 to win the EPYSA State Cup championship A total of 22 teams competed in the tournament. Teams were put into four team brackets for first round play. The Lightning defeated Philadelphia Soccer Club 2-1, Yardley-Makefield 1-0 and the United German Hungarians 2-1.

The sweep of bracket play put the Lightning into the quarterfinals against Fox Chase. Unlike the bracket play games, the Lightning finally won by more than one goals as they recorded a 3-1 victory to advance to the semifi- nals where they met Warrington. Playing in top form, the Lightning easily disposed of Warrington 3-0. The cham- pionship game against the Ukrainians saw the Lightning continue to play better and better soccer as they put to- gether a very convincing 4-0 win. The highlight of the game was goalkeeper Will Rosenbaum’s long punt down- field which took a big bounce over the opposing goalie and went into the net. Rosenbaum was also solid in goal as he recorded his third shutout of the tournament. Also scoring in the championship game were A.B. Winter, Josh Katz and Kyle Gaeffke. Midfielder Kevin Bendesky had two assists in the state final.

LMSC would like to congratulate the Lightning on their excellent spring season and wish them the best of luck as they go forward. The Lightning are coached by Adrian Cox who is also the head coach for the Episcopal Acad- emy boys varsity.

Page 2 VELEZ TAKE SECOND PLACE IN STATE CUPS

Congratulations to the Lower Merion Vélez, our Under 15 boys travel team on taking second place in the state cups this spring. Three years ago, at Under 12, the Velez were state champions and advance to the Region One USA championships where they were regional semifinalists. The Vélez were hoping to make it back to Regionals this year as they reached the finals against the FC Delco Under 15s.

The championship game was very even as both teams played solid defense throughout the game. Neither team was able to score in regulation so the two teams went into overtime where FC Delco prevailed to claim the state Championship and advance to the Regional Championships which will be held in Maine this year.

Earlier in the spring, the Vélez traveled to Bermuda to compete in a very high level international tournament. The Velez defeated the Bermuda National Under 15 team in the tournament and played many other top teams as well.

Since the players on the Vélez team will all be playing high school soccer in the fall (most of them will be in 10th grade this fall), Nuila will be head coach for our new Under 9A girls travel team while Turner will be head coach for our Under 11B girls travel team. Nuila and Turner will then help get the Vélez players back together again in No- vember, when the high school season comes to an end.

LMSC would like to congratulate head coach Miguel Nuila, assistant coach Ian Turner and the entire Vélez team on another great year for this group of players.

CANNIBALS REACH QUARTER-FINALS OF THE DALLAS CUP

The LMSC Cannibals, our Under 12A boys travel team traveled to Dallas in April to compete in the Dallas Cup, considered to be the toughest tournament in the country. The Cannibals spent eight days in Dallas, playing some great soccer, seeing some of the Under 19 teams from the best clubs in the world play and seeing many great cultural sites in Dallas, including Dealey Plaza (where President Kennedy was killed in 1963), the world famous Bone Daddy’s Restaurant and a great movie theatre showing Blades Of Glory.

In bracket play, the Cannibals played the Houston Texans, West Kendall Soccer Coalition from Miami and FC , the California South state champions. All three games were very competitive and the Cannibals saw some of the best soccer they have ever seen. The team did well enough to advance to the quarterfinals where they played FC Guadalajara from Mexico. Guadalajara is considered to be one of the very best professional soc- cer organizations in all of Mexico. Despite coming up short against the Mexican team, the Cannibals played well and fought to the end. Ironically, on the flight home, the team learned that the Guadalajara goalie was traveling on the same flight back to Philadelphia to visit his uncle, Antonio Fink, an LMSC coach and teacher at The Haver- ford School. Naturally, the Cannibals invited him to one of their training sessions while he was in Philadelphia.

One of the bigger highlights of the Dallas Cup was getting to watch the teams in the Under 19 Super Group play. Most of these teams are the feeder teams for the top clubs in the world. Several of the best players in the world have played in the Dallas Cup in their younger days, including David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Luis Figo, Joe Max Moore, Darren Anderton and the Philadelphia Kixx’ Peter Pappas.

Among the Under 19 Super Group teams that the Cannibals got to watch were: Real Madrid (Spain), Chelsea and Southampton (both from England), Sao Paolo (Brazil), Tigres and Chivas (both from Mexico), Eintracht Frank- furt (Germany), Takigawa (Japan), Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica) and the Shamrock Rovers from Ireland. Only two teams from the USA got to play in the Super Group, Arsenal, California (three time USA National Champions) and the Dallas Solar (last year’s national finalists). Despite being the best our country had to offer, both teams came up quite short against the foreign teams as Chelsea beat Arsenal 5-1 and Real Madrid beat Solar 4-0.

Back in the , the Cannibals reached the semifinals of the Jefferson Cup (Richmond, Virginia) and won the FC Delco Players Cup. These two tournaments are also considered to be among the toughest in the country. The Cannibals hope to return to the Dallas Cup in 2008 or 2009.

LMSC HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD LMSC is pleased to announce that an anonymous donor has generously stepped forward to create a college scholarship to benefit deserving youngsters who have participated in some capacity in LMSC. One of our LMSC families has offered to contribute a total of $5000 each year through the LMSC in scholarship money to one or two current high school seniors who have been affiliated with LMSC in some capacity for at least three years, includ- ing at least one year during high school. The LMSC is very appreciative of this wonderful overture.

This is the first year for this award. LMSC is please to announce that the 2007 winners of the LMSC High School Scholarship Award are: Becca Greenberg and Andrew Meiers. Becca has been serving as one of our intramural referee assignors for the past three years. She is a former player at LMSC and has been a referee in our club for five years. Becca will be traveling for a year and then studying at McGill University in Canada. Andrew Meiers has been involved in our program for over ten years. He has been a regular referee in our program for the past six years and has also served as a referee assignor for one season. Andrew will be heading to Valley Forge Mili- tary College this fall. Becca and Andrew will each receive a $2500 scholarship.

LMSC would like to thank Becca and Andrew for their many years of service over the years and wish them the best of luck as they head off to college.

SEVENTH ANNUAL RACHEL SAVETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNER ANNOUNCED

Seven years ago, one of our younger soccer players, Rachel Savett, passed away due to anaphylactic shock, caused by very bad food allergies. She had just been selected for one of our LMSC travel teams. Rachel’s fa- ther, Robert Savett, coached in LMSC for over ten years. To honor the memory of Rachel, LMSC created a schol- arship fund in her name. The scholarship is awarded each year to a former LMSC player, referee or field crew person who is currently in college.

This year’s winner of the scholarship is Matthew Krantz who will be attending Franklin and Marshall College this fall. LMSC will be awarding a $1000 scholarship to Matthew to help with his college expenses this coming fall. LMSC would again like to thank those of you who donated to this worthy cause.

LMSC ALUM OLSEN PLAYED IN 2006 WORLD CUP Congratulations to former LMSC player who played for the USA in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Olsen replaced Claudio Reyna in the 40th minute of the USA’s 2-1 loss to Ghana. Olsen has played for DC United of for the past nine years. He also represented the USA in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. While playing in LMSC, Olsen was a teammate of Adrian Cox, current head coach for the Un- der 10A boys team, the LMSC Lightning, who won the state cup this year. Another teammate of Olsen’s while at LMSC was Jon Conway, current goalkeeper for Red Bull of Major League Soccer. Similar to Olsen, Conway is in his ninth year in MLS, having played for the San Jose Earthquake before they relocated to Houston.

Page 4 SPRING INTRAMURAL SOCCER Below are pictures from the 2007 Spring Intramural Program’s five and six year old divisions. These divisions play small sided soccer (4 vs. 4 or 5 vs. 5), use a size 3 ball and play without goalies. These divisions all have a 25 minute skills clinic before the games each week. One of the pictures below shows players learning to head the ball properly. Learning the proper techniques of soccer will minimize the chances of injury.

Page 5 FALL INTRAMURAL PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Lower Merion Soccer Club is now accepting registrations for their Fall Intramural Soccer Program. The program is open to boys and girls born in 1994 through 2003. The 2007 season will be our 40th season. LMSC is affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation.

The season will start on Saturday, September 8 and run through November 11. All games and practices will be held at fields within Lower Merion Township. In 2006, we had over 1700 players participate in the Fall Intramu- ral Program. An additional 550 players ages 8-18 play in the very prestigious LMSC Travel Team Program.

For all divisions, except our youngest divisions (Atoms, Neutrons and Pee-Wee Divisions) and the Special Needs Division, there will be a late fee for registrations received after August 10th. We also cannot guarantee that we will be able to place a player on a team if his / her registration is received after August 10. This deadline is necessary so that we will have enough time to properly make team assignments and schedules for the 1700 plus players that we anticipate again having.

To find out which divisions still have openings, please check our website (www.lmsc.net). We will constantly update the site to show which players have been accepted into the Fall Intramural Program as well as show how many openings remain in each division. If the requested division is full, the registrant will be put on a waiting list or have their registration check returned.

ABOUT THE FALL INTRAMURAL PROGRAM

The Fall Intramural Program is divided into 14 different divisions based on age and gender. Each division uses one of three different formats, each designed to maximize skill development, obtain an optimal competitive level and, most importantly, maximize the amount of fun that each child has during the season.

The objective of all our programs is "to provide each and every child with a fun filled experience in a soccer environment." Our number one goal is fun, our number two goal is to develop each player's skills so that he/she may progress to higher levels of play in the future. We try to keep the winning and losing aspect in check for all players, and we expect this philosophy to be followed by each players' parents as well as other spectators at games.

Children do NOT have to follow the recommended guidelines for our age groups. They may play up in an older division or down in a younger division if the parents see fit. (This is NOT allowed in the Travel Team Program).

One of the primary purposes of the LMSC Intramural Program is to develop the more talented and enthusiastic players for the LMSC Travel Team Program. We offer boys and girls travel teams starting at Under 9 and going up through Under 19. We have up to four travel teams in each age group. Since 1989, LMSC Travel Teams have won 20 State Championships. Children with sufficient athletic ability and soccer interest should give serious con- sideration to trying out for the Travel Team Program when they are old enough. Travel team players, unlike intra- mural players, generally progress to high school varsity teams and beyond.

LMSC is a not-for-profit entity. It is the ONLY local area soccer program that is affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation, meaning that it is the ONLY local area program that can offer a Travel Team Program where the more talented and athletic youngsters can aspire to higher levels of play.

Six LMSC players have gone on to play professionally, including two currently playing in Major League Soccer. One former LMSC travel team player represented the USA on the 2006 Men’s World Cup team and the 2000 Olympic team. Three former LMSC players have represented our country on National Youth Teams. Another for- mer LMSC player, who holds dual citizenship, was a member of Spain’s Under 18 Women’s National Team. Many of our players have gone on to play in the Olympic Development Program and Division One .

Page 6 INFORMATION ON THE VARIOUS AGE DIVISIONS

OUR YOUNGEST AGE DIVISIONS PEE-WEE DIVISION: Children born in 2003 Sundays: Boys: 10:00, 12:30, 3:00 Girls: 11:15, 1:45 ATOMS DIVISION: Boys born in 2002 Saturdays at 9:15, 11:45, 2:15 and 3:30 NEUTRONS DIVISION: Girls born in 2002 Saturdays at 10:30 and 1:00

The emphasis of our Youngest Age Divisions is on enjoyment of the game and basic skill development. Players meet once a week. The players will be led through a 25 minute skills clinic, followed by games of 4 vs. 4 on scaled down fields to maximize player participation. A size 3 ball is used. These age groups use a "pickup soc- cer" format where players are randomly placed on different teams each week. This is done in order to minimize the pressures of winning and losing, thereby allowing each child to enjoy the game in a stress-free environment.

Because of the small numbers of players on each team, we need to have a large number of coaches in each divi- sion. Over 90 percent of our coaches are parents of the players. Parents are asked to give consideration to volunteering to coach. You do not need to have playing experience to be a coach. At LMSC, we set aside a large percentage of our budget for coaching materials, coaching clinics, etc. We believe that the best way to have a successful program is to have coaches who are enthusiastic and understand their roles and responsibilities. While registration will NOT close for these age groups, many of the time slots will close by August 1st.

Maximum number of players OUR MIDDLE AGE DIVISIONS accepted in division. BANTAMS DIVISION: Boys born in 2001 120 MICRONS DIVISION: Girls born in 2001 120 JUNIORS DIVISION: Boys born in 2000 120 QUASARS DIVISION: Girls born in 2000 120 INTERMEDIATES DIVISION: Boys born in 1999 120 PROTONS DIVISION: Girls born in 1999 120

The emphasis of our Middle Age Divisions is on enjoyment of the game, skill development and the introduction of being a part of a "team." Each player is assigned to a team of up to 14 players for the season. All teams play an eight game schedule, mostly on Saturdays with one or more Sunday afternoon games. Two simultaneous 5 vs. 5 games are played. The Intermediates and Protons use a size 4 soccer ball, the other divisions use a size 3 ball. Each team has one practice a week (held on a weeknight or Sunday afternoon, as determined by the coach).

Game times will vary each Saturday and can start as early as 8:30 AM or as late as 5:00 PM. Game times for all teams will be different each week. Be sure to note on the registration any night that you have conflicts with other fall activities. This will enable us to put each child on a team that will not practice on nights where there will be a conflict. Some divisions will close out early due to the limited number of parents who volunteer as head coaches. Maximum number of players OUR OLDEST AGE DIVISIONS accepted in division. SENIORS DIVISION: Boys born in 1997 and 1998 112 MAJORS DIVISION: Boys born in 1994, 1995 and 1996 108 ELECTRONS DIVISION: Girls born in 1997 and 1998 112 COSMOS DIVISION: Girls born in 1994, 1995 and 1996 108

Our Oldest Age Divisions are for children who are old enough to play in the LMSC Travel Team Program but who either did not make a travel team or who chose to stay in the Intramural Program. All teams will play an eight game schedule. Most games will be played on Saturdays with one or more Sunday games possible. Each team has one practice a week (held on a weeknight or Sunday afternoon, as determined by the coach).

Game times will vary each Saturday and can start as early as 8:30 AM or as late as 5:00 PM. Game times for all teams will be different each week. Be sure to note on your registration form any night that you have conflicts with other fall activities. This will enable us to put you on a team that does not practice on those nights.

Seniors and Electrons Divisions: Games are played 8 vs. 8, use a size 4 all and have a maximum of 14 players on a team. Standings are not kept, there are no end of season playoffs.

Majors and Cosmos Divisions: Games are played full sided 11 vs. 11 soccer, use a size 5 ball and have a maxi- mum of 18 players on a team. Standings are kept during the season and playoffs are held at the end of the sea- son to determine a champion. Children born in 1993 will NOT be accepted into either of these age groups.

Page 7 (Continued from page 7)

SPECIAL NEEDS DIVISION This program is geared toward children ages 6-15 with a wide variety of physical and mental limitations. To find out more about this program, or to determine whether a particular child would be suited for the Special Needs Di- vision, please e-mail us at: [email protected] .

OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT THE INTRAMURAL PROGRAM

EQUIPMENT By rule of the United States Soccer Federation, ALL players MUST wear shin guards to both practices and games. For safety reasons, soccer shoes are strongly recommended instead of sneakers. Intramural players will receive their soccer jersey at their first practice of the season. Intramural players can purchase a pair of our logoed LMSC navy intramural soccer shorts and white soccer socks at Sneaky Pete's (5 West Lancaster Avenue in Ardmore). Sneaky Pete's also carries a full line of youth shin guards and soccer shoes, as well as soccer balls. As our official supplier of soccer items, they also accept orders for other LMSC items such as our LMSC logoed soccer balls, sweat shirts, sweat pants and club jackets.

FINANCIAL AID Our program is not-for-profit. Its purpose is to provide all soccer loving youngsters with a chance to play. Players who are in need of financial assistance for the season may request this on their registration form. One of the goals of LMSC is to not have any child turn away from the program for financial reasons.

CAR POOL AND TEAMMATE REQUESTS We will attempt to honor car pool and teammate requests written on the registration form. We cannot guarantee that car pool requests or teammate requests will be honored since our first priority is to make teams within each division as fair and balanced as possible. Car pool requests may only be made with players in the SAME division. We will NOT switch players at the start of the season to different teams for this purpose, requests MUST be stated on the registration form. You may list a MAXIMUM of three people for teammate requests. If a player has a good friend who he or she would like to be placed with, please list him or her in this section of the registration form. We will also attempt, but not guarantee any specific coach requests as well. Car pool, teammate and coach requests received after August 10th will most likely not be honored since we must begin the difficult task of making team assignments at that time.

COACHING VOLUNTEERS Our program is dependent on having parents of players volunteer as coaches. PLEASE give consideration to vol- unteering as a coach, thank you. We provide head coaches with ample coaching material in order to make the program a success. You do not need to have played the game, you only need to have an interest in working with a small group of children and the ability to stay one or two steps ahead of them in learning the game.

We also need people to volunteer to be Division Commissioners. Their responsibilities are administrative, i.e., making team assignments for the older divisions, switching players from one team to another when necessary, making phone calls in the event of rainouts, distributing end of season trophies, etc.

If you are interested in serving as a Division Commissioner, head coach or assistant coach, PLEASE indicate this on your registration. Also, if you are planning on coaching, please send in your registration form AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated so we can mail coaching ma- terials, make coaching assignments, etc.

FIELD SITES Several school district and township fields will be closed this year for renovations. As a result, we do not know at the present time which divisions will play at which field locations. The boys camp will run from August 20-23. The girls camp will run from August 27-30. Both camps will run Monday through Thursday, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. The location of the camp has not been finalized yet. We do however antici- pate having the camp run at Amherst Fields, located on the opposite side of Bryn Mawr Avenue from Bala Cynwyd Middle School. This is the same location where the camp has been held the past three years.

Registration material for the UK Elite Fall Travel Team Camp can be found on our web page, www.lmsc.net in the Soccer Camps link.

RECENT TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS

The LMSC Shock (Under 15 girls) finished in first place at the Shoot For the Cure Soccer Tournament May 19th and 20th in the U15/16 Silver Division. Beginning the weekend with only 10 players, the Shock had a rocky start, losing 2-0 to a Reading team. By the afternoon, the Shock had a full squad of 11 and were able to wind their 2nd game 4-0. In their final game, the Shock knew they had to win in order to advance into the Championship game. They won their game convinc- ingly, 4-0. In the Championship game they met the Reading team again. The Shock came out flat and found themselves down 1-0. They rallied triumphantly to win the game 3-1. It was a bittersweet end for the Shock. They will not be playing again together next year. Several of the teammates are going in different directions. The girls had a wonderful experience together with a lot of great memories.

The LMSC Riptide (Under 17 girls) won the Super Group at the US Club Soccer Region A Championship this past weekend at LaGrangeville, NY. The team went 3-0 in the preliminary round and came back from a 2 goal deficit to beat Buffalo United 3-2 in the final. The team now qualifies for the US Club Soccer Nationals at Greensboro, NC July 28-31.

The LMSC Cannibals (Under 12 boys) won the FC Delco Players Cup top division over Memorial Day Weekend. The tournament included teams from New York, , Maryland and Pennsylvania. The Cannibals defeated NJSA (New Jersey) 4-3 in the semifinals and then defeated Yardley-Makefield 4-0 in the championship game on goals by Brett Campbell, Danny Gonzalez, Ben Marks and Kevin Lawson.

Page 13 FALL REFEREE AND FIELD CREW APPLICATIONS

Each year, LMSC hires people 11 years of age or older to referee in the Fall Intramural Program and also work as a Field Crew member. Below is information about the various programs that are available. To apply for one of the positions described below, please visit our web page, www.lmsc.net in the Fall Intramural Program section. Applications for intramural referee positions and field crew positions are now done exclusively online.

Applications should be submitted no later than August 10th. The intramural season will begin on Saturday, Sep- tember 8th and run through November 11th. Games will be played each weekend during that time period, except during holiday weekends. There are a limited number of Sunday games.

Referees will NOT have to be available each week. They will only be asked to work on days that their personal schedule permits them.

LEVEL 3 REFEREES - Must be at least 17 years of age OR be at least 15 years of age with a minimum of two years of referee experience. Level 3 Referees will be used for games in our 9-13 year old divisions. Level 3 refe- rees are paid $14 a game. Games will be primarily played on Saturdays (with some Sunday games) and last one hour. Games will be played at several different locations throughout the township.

LEVEL 2 REFEREES - Must be at least 13 years of age OR be at least 11 years of age with a minimum of one season of referee experience. Level 2 Referees will be used for games in our 6-8 year old divisions. Level 2 refe- rees are paid $12 a game. Games will be primarily played on Saturdays (with some Sunday games) and last one hour. Games will be played at several different locations throughout the township.

LEVEL 1 REFEREES - Must be at least 11 years of age with a minimum of two years of playing experience. No prior referee experience is necessary. Level 1 Referees will be used for games in our 4-5 year old divisions. These games pay $10 per session (each session is approximately 70 minutes long). These referees will also be expected to help the coaches teach the basic skills and tactics of the game to the players as well as help with the skills clinic held at the start of each session. All games for level 1 referees will be at Gladwyne Playground. There will be games on Saturdays and Sundays.

ALL Referees will be expected to dress in soccer attire and must provide their own whistle. The referee assignor will call referees each Thursday to find out which referees are available for that weekend. Rules and regulations will be forwarded to the referees. Referees will need to pass a written test at the Annual Referees Meeting before the start of the season.

FIELD CREW - Field crew members must be at least 13 years of age. Field crew workers will be paid $12 an hour to set up nets, line fields, remove trash and take down nets. Each week, they will need to have fields set up on Friday night or Saturday morning by 8:30 AM. Field crew workers must also remove trash from the fields and collect lost items at fields at the end of each weekend of play.

We will have a Head Field Crew person at each of our fields. The Field Crew head will call people on the field crew list to help complete their work. If you are interested in any of these positions, please return the enclosed application form by August 10th.

PLAYERS SELECTED FOR THE UNDER 8 DEVELOPMENTAL TRAVEL TEAM ACADEMY

This spring, LMSC picked a pool of players for their Under 8 Developmental Travel Team Academy. These play- ers will train in the fall and winter under the guidance of the LMSC coaching staff. The purpose of the program is to offer our top seven year old players an opportunity to develop their skills and increase their knowledge of the game so that they will be ready to tryout for the Travel Team Program the following year. The Under 8 Academy will again be headed up by Danielle Fagan, a 10 year veteran of the LMSC Travel Team Program and the head coach for the Conestoga High School Girls Varsity.

Congratulations to the following players on being selected to this year’s Under 8 Academy.

Page 18 LMSC STATE CUP HONOR ROLL

Each year, many of our travel teams compete in both the Indoor State Cups and the Outdoor State Cups. Since 1989, LMSC has had 69 teams reach the semifinals of State Cups. 20 of those teams have been crowned State Champions. Four teams have won the Indoor State Cup and Outdoor State Cup in the same year: the 2004 Under 12 boys Velez, the 2003 Under 12 boys Hammerheads, the 2002 Under 11 boys Hammerheads and the 1990 Under 13 boys Gorillas.
