Akron Zips roll past Western Michigan, 65-43, to open Mid-American Conference play By Elton Alexander, The Plain Dealer on January 09, 2013 at 8:51 PM, updated January 10, 2013 at 12:51 AM Print View/Post Comments AKRON, Ohio -- The Akron Zips were held well under their scoring average but still dispatched Western Michigan with ease, 65-43, Wednesday night in the opening game of Mid-American Conference play. A tight game at the half became a blowout inside the first six minutes of the second half. Before the Zips (10-4) were done, thanks to senior Brian Walsh scoring 10 of his 12 points in a 21-8 Akron run, the Broncos (8-6) were already reeling back to Kalamazoo, Mich. Enlarge Lonnie Timmons III, The Plain Dealer "They had five guys in the paint," Akron University of Akron's Alex Abreu is fouled by Western Michigan University's Austin Ritchie during the second half of their men's coach Keith Dambrot said of the Broncos. Akron men's basketball hosts Western Michigan gallery (7 photos) Freshman Pat Forsythe came off the bench for Akron to score 12 points with eight rebounds, while Nick Harney led in scoring with 15. "We're a great shooting team," Walsh said. "We knew they would fall. Coach called my number to start the second half." Walsh curled off a screen and had a wide-open look to trigger a 56 percent shooting effort by the Zips in the second half.

  • New York Giants 2012 Season Recap 2012 New York Giants
NEW YORK GIANTS 2012 SEASON RECAP The 2012 Giants finished 9-7 and in second place in the NFC East. It was the eighth consecutive season in which the Giants finished .500 or better, their longest such streak since they played 10 seasons in a row without a losing record from 1954-63. The Giants finished with a winning record for the third consecutive season, the first time they had done that since 1988-90 (when they were 10-6, 12-4, 13-3). Despite extending those streaks, they did not earn a postseason berth. The Giants lost control of their playoff destiny with back-to-back late-season defeats in Atlanta and Baltimore. They routed Philadelphia in their finale, but soon learned they were eliminated when Chicago beat Detroit. The Giants compiled numerous impressive statistics in 2012. They scored 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history; the 1963 Giants scored 448. The 2012 season was the fifth in the 88-year history of the franchise in which the Giants scored more than 400 points. The Giants scored a franchise- record 278 points at home, shattering the old mark of 248, set in 2007. In their last three home games – victories over Green Bay, New Orleans and Philadelphia – the Giants scored 38, 52 and 42 points. The 2012 team allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks. The Giants were fourth in the NFL in both takeaways (35, four more than they had in 2011) and turnover differential (plus-14, a significant improvement over 2011’s plus-7). The plus-14 was the Giants’ best turnover differential since they were plus-25 in 1997.

  • David Cutcliffe Named Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year
For Immediate Release: December 5, 2013 Contact: Al Carbone (203) 671-4421 - Follow us on Twitter @WalterCampFF Duke’s David Cutcliffe Named Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year NEW HAVEN, CT – David Cutcliffe, head coach of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division champion Duke University Blue Devils, has been named the Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year. The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 21st coach on December 15, 2007. Last season, he led the high- scoring Blue Devils to a school record 410 points (31.5 points per game) and a berth in the Belk Bowl – the program’s first bowl appearance since 1994.

Terry Bowden's resume gives Akron football hope: Terry Pluto Published: Thursday, December 22, 2011, 8:50 PM Updated: Friday, December 23, 2011, 1:09 AM Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer By Terry Bowden and Akron? Bowden coaching games in the snow? Bowden recruiting in the Midwest? Bowden as the new head coach of the Akron Zips? It's hard to imagine the 54-year-old Bowden -- son of legendary Florida State coach Bobby Bowden -- coaching in the Mid-American Conference. That's especially true since other than a brief stop at Salem College in West Virginia (1983-85), all of Bowden's head coaching experience has been in the state of Alabama. But once my choice for the job -- Wayne State coach Paul Winters -- turned down the Zips, I was worried they'd take the same road as the recent past. The minefield was hiring a young assistant who has never been a head coach in high school or a small college. He comes from a major program such as Notre Dame (Rob Ianello) and Pittsburgh (J.D. Brookhart). He seems kind of clueless about the MAC and overwhelmed by the challenge of making the Zips respectable. Wait a minute, didn't Brookhart take the Zips to their only Division I bowl game? TWO-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL COACH DABO SWINNEY WILL SPEAK AT 2020 FRED BARAKAT SPORTS DINNER PRESENTED BY THE CARROLL COMPANIES; 2019 Dinner with Naismith Hall of Fame Coach Jim Boeheim Raises $30,328 For Immediate Release. Oct. 17, 2019 GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson University Football and two-time National Championship coach Dabo Swinney will speak at the 2020 Fred Barakat Sports Dinner presented by the Carroll Companies benefitting the Matt Brown Learn-to-Swim Endowment, the Greensboro Sports Council announced today. Founded in 2008, The Fred Barakat Sports Dinner was renamed in 2011 in memory of the late associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The 2020 event is set for Wednesday, May 13 on the Greensboro Coliseum arena floor. Swinney led the Clemson Tigers to two of the last three College Football Playoff national championships. He took over as the Clemson head coach during the 2008 season and never looked back winning 122 of his 152 games including six wins this season for a .802 winning percentage. Swinney’s appearance at the Fred Barakat Sports Dinner will raise funds for the Matt Brown Learn-to-Swim program which aims to teach every second-grade student in the Guilford County School System water-safety skills. Sixty-one percent of all children and 64 percent of African American children do not know how to swim; drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. “I’m looking forward to speaking in Greensboro next spring to help raise money for a great cause and remember the life of Fred Barakat who did so much for ACC Basketball,” Swinney said.
