MONOGRÁFICO MISCELÁNEA Eikón Imago e-ISSN: 2254-8718 MISCELÁNEA Estudio iconológico del filme experimental At Land (Maya Deren, 1944) Carmen Vitaliana Vidaurre Arenas1 Recibido: 04/06/2018 / Aceptado: 27/10/2018 / Publicado: 15/11/2018 Resumen: El estudio iconológico de At Land (Maya Deren, 1944) permite identificar las tradiciones iconográficas que en el cortometraje se recuperan, algunos de los significados, elementos culturales e ideologías, con los que los componentes visuales se relacionan, y contribuye a hacer evidente la coherencia argumental del filme, que ofrece concepciones específicas del espacio-tiempo y de la identidad. En esta película el ajedrez adquiere una semántica metafórica relevante, unida a la práctica de un montaje creativo y a la recuperación de tópicos de representación de lo femenino en el arte y la cultura, provenientes de un contexto mítico-religioso. La lectura de los escritos teóricos de Deren y el análisis de la narración visual, desde esta perspectiva de estudio, nos brindan también argumentos para separar la obra de la cineasta, de algunos de los movimientos y tendencias del arte y la cinematografía con los que diversos críticos han identificado la producción fílmica de esta directora vanguardista. [en] Iconological Study of the Experimental Film At Land (Maya Deren, 1944) Abstract: The iconological analysis of At Land (Maya Deren, 1944) allows us to identify iconographic traditions that are recovered in the short film, as well as some of the meanings, aspects of culture and ideologies related to these visual elements. Such a reading reveals the consistency of the argument of the film's plot-one that offers specific concepts of space-time and identity. -

121 Thinking Deren Elinor Cleghorn Maya Deren. Film frames. (no date). Reproduced with kind permission of the Maya Deren Collection at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Centre, Boston University. ctober 2011 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Maya Deren: filmmaker, poet, dancer, ethnographer, teacher, visionary. The occasion proffers the opportu- Onity to reconsider Deren’s considerable cinematic legacy and to re-view her slight collection of completed works in light of the progression of screen-based practices over the last fifty years. Her work is particularly significant to screendance and choreographic cinema; ripples of her relevance, like rings in water, are present in so many film works seeking to explore the possibilities for moving bodies on screen. In her films, such as A Study in Choreography for Camera (1945) and The Very Eye of Night, which saw its New York release in 1959, the dancing body appears to at once transcend the limitations and the strictures of gravity and of physicality. In Ritual in Transfigured Time, completed in 1946, the movements of guests at a cocktail party become an integrated mechanism through which the capacity of the filmic medium to confer a dance-like quality upon quotidian movement is brought to screen. Meditation on Violence (1948) describes the quality of movement of two qualitatively different schools of Chinese boxing through a solo performance, with which the camera collaborates. Deren was of course not the first to bring dance to film or to choreographically configure elements -

Many art forms have adapted the myth over several centuries; here are just a few. A commercial for ShopRite Composer Camille Saint-Saëns borrowed the galop and slowed it to a crawl to represent the tortoise in his orchestral suite The Carnival of the Animals. Click here to listen to it. Disney’s The Little Mermaid used it at the end of this clip. The 1952 film Moulin Rouge used for a demonstration of the actual can-can. The 2001 film Moulin Rouge also uses the infernal galop, but gives it lyrics and uses it to pitch a show. -

Photography freezes moments of life on a time-line; it captures and evokes the existence that already belongs to the past. Although different in nature from autobiographical writings, it serves as an important source of knowledge of one’s life; as it does not only proves that ‘one was’, but also gives an insight into ‘how one was’. Portraits of Jean Cocteau (1889–1963), who for over four decades was one of the most frequently photographed members of Paris van- guard, demonstrate an essential aspect of the artist’s identity and authenticity. When posing for photographs, Cocteau always had the same strategy, one which became his authorial signature. This chameleon of Parisian artistic salons attempted various trans- formations treating his own body as a means of expression. He avoided sincerity; in- stead he turned the process of photo shooting into a glamorized spectacle. For example, a photograph titled Jack-of-all-trades , taken by Philippe Halsman in 1948, shows Jean Cocteau stylized as a character taken away from his poetic, imaginary world. -
Women's Experimental Cinema
FILM STUDIES/WOMEN’S STUDIES BLAETZ, Women’s Experimental Cinema provides lively introductions to the work of fifteen avant- ROBIN BLAETZ, garde women filmmakers, some of whom worked as early as the 1950s and many of whom editor editor are still working today. In each essay in this collection, a leading film scholar considers a single filmmaker, supplying biographical information, analyzing various influences on her Experimental Cinema Women’s work, examining the development of her corpus, and interpreting a significant number of individual films. The essays rescue the work of critically neglected but influential women filmmakers for teaching, further study, and, hopefully, restoration and preservation. Just as importantly, they enrich the understanding of feminism in cinema and expand the ter- rain of film history, particularly the history of the American avant-garde. The essays highlight the diversity in these filmmakers’ forms and methods, covering topics such as how Marie Menken used film as a way to rethink the transition from ab- stract expressionism to Pop Art in the 1950s and 1960s, how Barbara Rubin both objecti- fied the body and investigated the filmic apparatus that enabled that objectification in her film Christmas on Earth (1963), and how Cheryl Dunye uses film to explore her own identity as a black lesbian artist. At the same time, the essays reveal commonalities, in- cluding a tendency toward documentary rather than fiction and a commitment to nonhi- erarchical, collaborative production practices. The volume’s final essay focuses explicitly on teaching women’s experimental films, addressing logistical concerns (how to acquire the films and secure proper viewing spaces) and extending the range of the book by sug- gesting alternative films for classroom use. -
Maya Deren: 50 Years On
PRESS RELEASE: July 2011 11/60 BFI Southbank presents: Maya Deren: 50 Years On October 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of visionary filmmaker, choreographer and theorist Maya Deren. Her first film, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), endures as one of the most widely exhibited films of experimental cinema. She famously announced that she ‘made her pictures for what Hollywood spends on lipstick’, and through her films she challenged the rigid structures of studio films, playing with form and exploring poetry, dance, visual art and a fascination for Haitian voodoo. To celebrate the life and work of Deren, BFI Southbank will present a season of her films, including rare uncut footage, and events, opening with Séance for Maya Deren on 4 October. A BFI Classic of Meshes… will be published, accompanied by a launch event and lecture at BFI Southbank, while Renewing Deren’s Legacy: Daria Martin, Jayne Parker, Sarah Pucill will bring together three London-based filmmakers who have been inspired by Deren. Maya Deren was born Eleonora Derenkovskaya in Kiev in 1917, and moved with her parents to the US in 1921. Meshes of the Afternoon was made in collaboration with her then husband, Alexander Hammid, and may be seen alongside four more titles, all made between 1943 and 1955, including Ritual in Transfigured Time (1945-46) in the first part of the Maya Deren Programme: Chamber Films. She considered film making, with its unique facility to manipulate time, conjoin unrelated spaces and choreograph movement, could blend elements into a transcendent, ritualised form. In 1946, Deren was awarded the first ever Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Work in the Motion Pictures with an application to film ritual activity in Haiti. -

Directing style: Icon of French avant-garde cinema; master of surrealism; created a personal mythology onscreen; reverse-filming techniques; fantastical set design. 1880s Painter, poet, playwright, novelist, set designer, and director, Jean Cocteau perfected the art of the surrealist special effect. He is perhaps most famous for his masterwork, the Orphic trilogy: Le sang d’un poète (1930) (The Blood of a Poet), Orphée (1950) (Orpheus), and Le testament d’Orphée, ou ne me demandez pas pourquoi! (1960) (The Testament of Orpheus). Top Takes… In The Blood of a Poet the viewer is taken on an odyssey into the mind of the artist, replete with talking statues, attempts to Le testament d’Orphée, ou ne me demandez pas pourquoi! 1960 fly, and suicide. In Orpheus, poetic transmissions on a car radio (The Testament of Orpheus) lure Orphée into his deepest desires and the underworld. 8 x 8: A Chess Sonata in 8 Movements 1957 Orphée was played by Cocteau’s long-time homosexual lover, La Villa Santo-Sospir 1952 Orphée 1950 (Orpheus) Jean Marais. He communes with the princess of death by Coriolan 1950 walking through a mirror into Cocteau’s underworld. Characters Les parents terribles 1948 return from the dead by reverse imagery, the film running (The Storm Within) backward so they can spring back into the living world. When L’aigle à deux têtes 1948 (The Eagle has Two Heads) Beauty enters the hall of the Beast, enchantment bursts forth La belle et la bête 1946 via a procession of disembodied arms reaching out of the (Beauty and the Beast) walls, torches in hand, to light her way. -
Barbara Hammer Is a Visual Artist Primarily Working in Film and Video
61 INTERVIEW “Art Is Energy”: Barbara Hammer Speaks with Sarah Keller about the State of Experimental Cinema after Maya Deren arbara Hammer is a visual artist primarily working in film and video. She was recently honored with retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City (2011), Bthe Tate Modern, London (2012), and the Jeu de Paume, Paris (2012). Her work reveals and celebrates marginalized peoples whose stories have not been told, and it engages an audience viscerally and intellectually with the goal of activating them to make social change. Her trilogy of documentary film essays on lesbian and gay history has received numerous awards: Nitrate Kisses (1992), Tender Fictions (1995), History Lessons, (2000). Recent films, A Horse Is Not A Metaphor (2009), Generations (2010), and Maya Deren’s Sink (2011) were awarded Teddy Awards for Best Short Film at the Berlin International Film Festival. HAMMER! Making Movies Out of Sex and Life, a book of memoirs and personal film theory, was published by The Feminist Press, City University of New York, and Fearless Frames: The Films of Barbara Hammer at The Tate Modern will be released by Mousse Publishing, Milan, Italy in 2013. Sarah Keller first became aware of Barbara Hammer’s work through her first research into Maya Deren’s work, specifically from Hammer’s essay in tribute to Deren in Bill Nichols’ anthology Maya Deren and the American Avant-Garde (University of California Press, 2001). Since then, she has become a great fan of Hammer’s work, and recently invited her to lecture at Colby College, where it has generally been affirmed that during her visit Hammer positively transformed people’s lives, not at all unlike the way Deren affected her own audi- ences. -

Avant-garde Women Filmmakers Previous editions of Film, Form, and Culture included a section on avant-garde women filmmakers. Clearly, and sadly, our brief listing of film auteurs has not included the names of women directors. The simple and obvious answer to this is that women are allowed to play only a small role in film production, though, happy to say, it is getting better. Sofia Coppola, for example, daughter of the man who made the Godfather films, is quickly being recognized as a major talent, especially with her films Lost in Translation (2003) and The Bling Ring (2013). But in the complex, too-often frustrating world of women’s place in film, we need to discriminate between a number of issues. One is the representation of women themselves: how films “see” women, narrate them and their stories. We’ve discussed earlier how the basic narrative structure of intercutting shot/reverse shot, especially in the rescue narrative, is built upon men saving women. We have also seen, and will examine even more thoroughly in the following chapters, how the structure of the gaze—the looking of one character at another and the viewer at both—is directed toward women as erotic objects. The simple point is that, as a part of the larger culture, film reflects the values of that culture and traps women with male-dominated ways of thinking and control. Commercial, narrative film persists in trapping itself within the old and worn-out master narratives of passive femininity and active masculinity, and of heterosexuality as the only means of intimacy.
