  • Helen Churchill Candee – an Introduction
Helen Churchill Candee – An Introduction Helen Churchill Candee was born in 1858 as Helen Churchill (her mother’s maiden name) Hungerford of New York. Her father was a successful merchant, and Helen grew up in relative comfort both there and in Connecticut where the family moved shortly thereafter. More important than the physical provisions prosperity allowed, she was exposed to ideas and stories, music and art, history and culture, in ways unlikely to have been possible had she lived a generation before, or anywhere else. Helen started her formal education in one of America’s first kindergartens, then attended several girls’ boarding schools of the sort only available to a certain quality of family – and even then mostly only those in New England. Before she was a teenager she spoke and wrote multiple languages, was schooled in grace and etiquette, and probably knew more history and literature than a majority of adult men in the nation at the time. She was particularly inspired, according to one diary entry, by an event at which Charles Dickens read aloud from one of his works. How many of you have heard Dickens live? My point exactly. She was born into the right sort of family in the right part of the country at a pretty good time to become what she became. While her life was not without suffering or tragedy, neither did she rise from rags and neglect to riches and fame. Upbringing mattered, as did education and opportunity. None of which detracts from her choices, hard work, or natural abilities, of course.

The Forum was organized and hosted by the Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council (RCAC) with additional funding provided by the Oil Spill Recovery Institute, Tesoro, and Unocal. The primary goal of the Safety of Navigation in Cook Inlet Forum was to bring together all the parties involved in marine transportation in Cook Inlet and identify steps that can be taken to prevent spilled oil. Cook Inlet is a key factor in the economy of the state of Alaska. The 220-mile long waterway serves as a marine highway for many types of vessels: oil tankers, log ships, bulk fuel carriers, LNG vessels, cargo ships, ferries, and cruise ships all rely on Cook Inlet to serve over 80 percent of the states population. Many of these vessels carry large amounts of oil, either as cargo or as bunker fuel, and they present real risks for a major oil spill. The Cook Inlet RCAC's mission is to promote environmentally safe marine transportation and the Forum was a step in that direction. At the time this Forum was taking place, Secretary Rodney Slater, U.S.

This event ranks as one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history. On the night of April 14, at 11:40 p.m., the ship struck an iceberg and sank in just under three hours with the loss of approximately 1500 lives. There are many descriptions of the disaster by the surviving passengers and crew and the sinking has been the subject of numerous investigations. They dream of the day when their real powers will blossom forth in all their glory, and something big will be done. The great trouble about waiting to do the big things is, the years are piling up and nothing is being done. The day is not far away when one's powers to accomplish will be unequal to one's ambitions, and the dream will remain a dream-un filled and unattained. To sit by the dead embers of unrealized dreams is poor comfort for the years to come, and a sad commentary upon one's record of aspirations and achievements. The big thing can be done by most of us who dream in terms of successful accomplishment. How? It doesn't take a prophet to disclose the secret. Just ordi· nary sense and understanding of life will point the way to big achieve ment-DO IT TODAY. Do the little things that lie in our way that must be done-do them now, for the little things well done are the foundations of the bigger things we crave to do. Success is but the accumulation of little things faithfully done. Today is the most momentous day in your history-it will not come back when once it is gone, carrying with it its record of work.
