The city was the first ever to receive the European Green Capital Award in 2010, based on its consistent record of achieving high environmental standards and commitment to ongoing improvements and sustainable development. To sum it up, just about everything in Stockholm is done with quality of life in mind. Here are six story ideas for exploring the city from a green and blue perspective. CONSIDERABLE CONTEMPORARY QUALITY OF LIFE First-time visitors to Stockholm are typically struck by two things: first, the sense of style and creativity of the people, be it food, music, design, fashion or technology, and second, by their sound lifestyle, behavior patterns and consumption habits and the tangible authenticity of these things. What is it about this city that hits the number one position when it comes to quality of life? And what is it about Sweden that makes it so healthy? I believe that love and care for nature are key elements of the Swedish soul and a vital part of modern society in Stockholm. Stockholmers take pride in their enjoyment of outdoor life. During fall, for instance, you will not find a single work place where Monday discussions aren’t all about the weekend harvest of apples, blueberries and chanterelles—all made possible through the unique “Right of Public Access”1, which is a right to roam freely in the countryside, and to show consideration for nature, wildlife and landowners. Winter, spring, or fall, Stockholmers enjoy the outdoors all year long in city parks, on leisure boats or in summer houses. In fact, 10 percent of the Swedish population owns a summer house2, and ten percent owns a leisure boat 3, primarily among those living in major urban areas. The cold air doesn’t seem to stop parents from placing their loved ones outdoors6, despite grim weather conditions. One of the most popular types of kindergartens in Stockholm is all about being outdoors . Kids use all their senses, and while they may get muddy, they also grow stronger and healthier. One of Stockholm’s landmarks is the af Chapman, a boat that is now a hostel situated on the island of Skeppsholmen. Skeppsholmen, which means Ship’s Island, is a great place to explore Stockholm’s maritime history. The three museums, The Modern Museum, Arkitekturmuseet (Museum of Architecture) and Östasiatiska Museet (Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities), are all housed in converted navy buildings. The yellow house on Långa Raden, nowadays called Hotel Skeppsholmen, was built to house the marines, and a former torpedo workshop has been converted into a cozy restaurant called Hjerta, which means heart. Along the quays of the city, you will find house boats, especially along Skeppsholmen and Norr Mälarstrand. Plenty of museums are linked to the water, particularly the Vasa Museum, as well as Sjöhistoriska (Maritime Museum) and Historiska (National Historical Museum). The latter tells the true story of the vikings. This year, a former wharf area on Beckholmen, Djurgården will be reenergized with a luxury restaurant, Oaxen Krog och Slip, which will open in the summer of 2013. Stockholm has three UNESCOs World Heritage sites, each of which combines culture and nature: the viking village of Birka and Hovgården on Lake Mälaren; the beautiful landscape and buildings of Skogskyrkogården, the Woodland Cemetery, designed by renowned architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz, and Drottningholm Palace, with its beautiful park, the Chinese Pavilion and theater, still used with original sets from 1766. The combination of nature, innovation and culture make Stockholm unique. Surprisingly, many of the top attractions in Stockholm are all about the combination of culture and the outdoors. Take Skansen, the open-air museum, as an example: the entire museum is packed with culture, historic traditions, buildings, food and entertainment—all of it outside. Visitors learn about Swedish culture and enjoy it at the same time. The eco-friendly Rosendals Garden Café next door is another great example of simultaneous cultural storytelling and leisurely enjoyment. As a matter of fact, the entire green island of Djurgården is packed with culture, events, festivals and recreation. Djurgården, which is part of the Royal National City Park, is home to 20 of Stockholm’s museums and attractions. CELEBRATING LIGHT AND DARKNESS The main traditions in Sweden are related to the most obvious and unique characteristics of our part of the world: bright summer nights and dark December days. Explore the magic of the midnight sun in May and June, when life after work starts with a long swim followed by an al fresco picnic in a park and ends with a drink at one of the outdoor clubs a few hours later—with the sun still shining. Midsummer is best celebrated in the Swedish countryside, but Stockholm is lovely any other day. When the days are short, Lucia, Queen of Light, brightens up the dark winter with candlelight and singing on December 13. The city snuggles down as it is transformed into a Narnian fairy- tale, blanketed in cottony white snow. Even the smallest café offers a candlelit experience to remember. Skansen is the perfect place to explore all Swedish traditions, new and old. The intensity of the seasons—a harsh winter giving way to a sudden euphoric spring—also breeds a split personality: sober, sensual, tolerant and as whimsical as the colorful quilts on the chairs of an outdoor café in March, when the snow and cold weather remain, or the indoor nightclubs that move outside in summer. And don’t forget the importance of a stylish indoor environment to survive winter inside. The water and parks are two of the city’s greatest assets and are enjoyed all year long. With 87.5 square meters of green area per resident in Stockholm, the city has a lot to offer. Did you know that Stockholm’s water is so clean that you can swim, fish for salmon, or even drink it? Rent a bike and cycle along the quays of exclusive Strandvägen Boulevard, or past City Hall. Take a walk and enjoy the views from Södermalm. Rent a canoe and paddle through the lush Långholmen canal and delight in an afternoon swim. Enjoy a morning jog around the Djurgårdsbrunnsviken canal in the Royal National City Park, fish for your own dinner outside the Royal Palace, hop on the Djurgårdsfärjan ferry or sightsee by boat, or rent a RIB boat and take off into the archipelago. There are plenty of options. Though the days are shorter in winter, you will find Stockholmers making the most out of the few hours of daylight. It is common to see people dressed for cross-country skiing and carrying their skis on the subway, and there are plenty of cross-country skiing opportunities in the Royal National City Park, by Tekniska Högskolan or at Gärdet. Few of the world’s capital cities can boast downhill skiing in the city center, but Stockholm can. In the middle of Hammarby Sjöstad, a sustainable residential area, you will find the Hammarbybacken ski slope. If you would rather ice skate, try it in Stockholm. In the winter, the lakes freeze and you can walk on frozen water or ice skate, which is safest on the ice skating rink at Kungsträdgården. The area includes approximately 27 km2 (6,671 acres) of unbroken land. The Royal National City Park of Stockholm is owned by the royal family but open to the general public.

Nordiska museet and Skansen: Displays of Floating Nationalities Magdalena Hillström Department of Culture Studies, Linköping University Abstract This article explores how national narratives were performed and displayed at Nordiska museet and Skansen from late 19th century until the end of the 20th century. It shows how the museum’s national narratives were negotiated and transformed in the wake of new political orientations, from the utopia of “folkhemmet” to contemporary visions of the multi-cultural society. Nordiska museet and Skansen have strongly been associated with successful nation- making. This notion however tends to suppress a prevailing tension between the museum’s Nordicness and its Swedishness. From very early on Artur Hazelius collected objects from an indecisive Nordic area, including Russia and Germany. After his death in 1901 efforts were made to nationalize Nordiska museet and Skansen.     44 Skansen Djurgårdsslätten 49–51 Djurgården Tram 7 44 www.skansen.se Founded in 1891, Skansen is the oldest open-air museum in the world with approximately 150 buildings brought from all over Sweden, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Most of the buildings are open and there are guides dressed in traditional costumes doing old-fashioned crafts such as weaving, butter-making, spinning, etc. There are open-air concerts regularly on summer evenings and fabulous views of the city. There is also a zoo and lots of ABBA- related things to see. Towards the rear of Skansen you can find Kronbergs ateljé (Kronberg’s studio) featuring the artwork of painter Julius Kronberg (1850–1921.) He was a professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. His works feature at Kungliga Slottet (see p. 52), the Hallwyl Palace and Dramaten. After his death, his studio was donated to Nordiska Museet but later moved to Skansen. Kronberg’s painting of Eros is on the cover of ABBA’s album The Visitors. Everything is still almost as it was in 1981 in the studio. Look out for the book that Agnetha is flicking through and the wooden bench that Benny sits on. Unfortunately you won’t be allowed to sit on it as it has been roped off for some time. The red armchair that Frida sits on can be found in the room away from the painting. Keep looking and you’ll find it. You’ll notice that there is a large water stain on it that Frida obscures by sitting in front of it for the album cover! The chair that Björn is leaning against is also in the room.
