Message from the President

Members, We made it through our first quarter of 2019! Although we had some challenges, we came out on top. Thank you to our treasurer, Lou Monico, for doing such a great job managing our finances. His position is normally one that goes unnoticed until something goes wrong, but Lou has made positive changes and keeps a watchful eye. I am so grateful for his help this year.

March brought us Beatle Beat, a fantastic tribute band, and of course delicious food and drinks. We had a great crowd and heard many compliments from the guests who attended. My thanks go to everyone who helped make this dinner dance a success. Next, Reministyx entertained us at our Pub Night on the 23rd. If you haven’t seen this group, you’re missing out. It was a fun night and I appreciate everyone that came out to help. We couldn’t do it without you!

March also brought our annual Memorial Luncheon, a special celebration of members who have passed in the previous year attended by their loved ones. Thank you to Virginia Esposito and Cathy Irene for bringing this treasured event to each year. And sincere thanks to member Don Kent for his very generous donation, which will go a long way to support this and future memorials.

April’s dinner dance theme is Puttin on the Ritz, featuring our very own Tim Rippey. Get your tickets soon. Remember you can call the office between 9am and 3pm weekdays to purchase your tickets or see our social ladies on Tuesday and Friday nights. We’ll close April with the always popular Latin Pub Night with Tito. Only full table reservations are available for this event. If you’re not planning to attend but want to help, we are always looking for volunteers. Contact our social ladies to see how you can help.

Elections are right around the corner and there are many positions to fill. If you think you might be interested, let me know or talk with one of our current board members about what the position entails. It takes a village to keep this club running smoothly and I can tell you, as president this past year, I couldn’t have done it without every one of my fellow board members pitching in. If I don’t say it enough, I appreciate all of you for all you do.

We’ve sold 100 bricks so our Brick Memorial WILL come to life! If you want to purchase a brick, now is the time as we will be placing our order very soon. Contact the office for more info.

Finally, a big thank you goes to our Building & Grounds team, led by Kenny Kraemer. Their continued efforts have saved us lots of money and made it possible to afford the equipment we’ve had to replace this year. We are lucky to have such talented members!

Prayers go out to all our members who have suffered illness and loss. Please, if you know a member who is hospitalized, ill or has passed, let us know so we can acknowledge them.

See you the club!

A TIDBIT ABOUT OUR HERITAGE -GIUSEPPE BELLANCA-

Most of us have been on a passenger plane, but fewer have thought about the origin of such a plane. It all started in 1911 in Milan, Italy when a young man from the city of Sciacca in Sicily, named Giuseppe Bellanca, graduated from the Istituto Politecnico (today university), with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Reading about the flight of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk in 1903, he decided to build a passenger plane. When applying for a loan, he was asked two questions. First, was he a pilot and second had he ever built a passenger plane to which he responded negatively and therefore was declined. Commu nicating with his brother who had emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, Giuseppe was told to join him in N.Y. Where the financing would be available. Arriving in Brooklyn he applied to a bank and again was declined.

However, in a demonstration of the greatness of this country, the chef and waiters of a restaurant where he ate, agreed to finance him. A young attorney named Fiorello LaGuardia drew up the legal documents. Bellanca had no money to pay him but offered to give the lawyer flying lessons if in return he received auto driving lessons which was done. The big question is who had taught Bellanca how to fly? There was no one. The Wright brothers had performed the first flight in 1903 a few years prior. There were no expert pilots, he was self-taught. The U.S. entered the First World War, and soon LaGuardia was flying a three engine Italian bomber on the Italian front and commanding 400 American pilots there.

Bellanca's plane was built after the conflict, carried four passengers and had an autonomy of 500 miles at 125 m.p.h. It now hangs in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington. Bellanca was on the cover of Time magazine on July 4, 1927. His airplane was Charles Lindbergh's first choice to fly across the Atlantic, but Bellanca's partner was afraid that he would not be able to stay awake all those hours and would crash giving the plane a bad name. In 1927 Lindbergh crossed on another plane. in the ocean. A few days later, Bellanca’s plane with two pilots flew from N.Y. to Germany, non-stop. Think about it when next you take a flight.
