1. UST to spearhead liquid display research Our press release on this research being conducted by a team under Prof H.S. Kwok of EEE was picked up favourably by 10 papers (11/6-19/7).

2. UST hosts HK Youth Earth Summit '94 This open forum, organised by Green Power and sponsored by IES, was held on 26/6. Prof Gary Heinke, Director of IES was one of the speakers who spoke to the 200-odd participants. This event was widely reported by the press. There were a total of 24 newspaper stories(28/5 - 11/7) on this event.

3. UST construction costs reined in with a $270m saving A total of 10 papers(8 - 10/6) reported this and quoted RHKJC's chief executive, General Guy Watkins as urging the govt. to allow UST to spend at least some of the money on items that were not provided but which were both well justified and needed. Another 4 papers (11/6) mentioned that Secretary for Education and Manpower told reporters at a public function that UPGC would decide how the money should be spent. Both (9/6) and SCMP(16/6) interviewed VC/P who noted that the money should be given to UST for research facilities and other projects such as UG housing, sports facilities, and amenities. Ming Pao(10/6) mentioned that a LegCo member, Mr Cheung man-kong, suggested using the money for loans to tertiary students.

4. VC/P visits San Francisco Seven papers, including 6 Chinese papers(14-22/6) in USA and (24/6) reported VC/P's brief speaking tour. His luncheon speech at the Metropolitan Club was described. A meet-the-media session organised by HK Govt.'s SF office was attended by Channel 26 TV, Channel 66 TV, Journal of Commerce, San Jose Mercury News, Sing Tao Daily, , and the China Press. The VC/P used the opportunity to talk about 's future, education, and technological development, emphasising progresses at HKUST.

5. VC/P's complimentary message for Wah Kiu Yat Po's 69 Anniversary The message was published on 5/6.

6. Exhibition to promote mother-tongue education in HK HKS(3/6) carried a story on this exhibition organised by the Education Dept. VC/P's comments on mother-tongue education was included in the exhibition.

7. Lunch with VC/P A columnist of Sing Tao Daily(17/6) talked about her impression of VC/P after a lunch with him.

8. VC/P's comments on press freedom and responsibility The Express(10/6) carried a minor column in which the writer mentioned about VC/P's comments on press freedom and responsibility.

9. Press interviews of PVC-R&D As a result of further publicity efforts to introduce our new PVC-R&D, 5 papers (4/6-21/7) interviewed him on his career and plans for UST. The Economist(4-10/6) also mentioned his arrival to UST.

10. Prof Leroy Chang, Dean of Science honoured Three papers(11-27/6), including Shenzhen Special Zone Daily(11/6), picked up our press release on Prof Chang's election to be a member of the U.S. National Academy of Science. Two other papers(9/6) mentioned that Prof Chang was also elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Science.

11. Seminar on "Internet: Doing Business on the Information Highway" Sing Tao Daily(2,9/6) carried 2 supplements on this seminar which was jointly organised by the paper and UST.

12. "Communicating in the 1990s" In a feature with this title on INTERNET, Eastern Express(27/6) mentioned UST's service in the area.

13. Complaint about UST's management structure Sing Tao Daily(23/6) referred to an anonymous letter concerning a new position at PVC-AA's office and noted that the anonymous writer criticised promotions for administrative staff at UST. United Daily (HK)(23/6) also briefly mentioned the anonymous complaint. UST's response was later published by the paper (24/6) and Ming Pao(24/6).

14. Dr Danny Wong of Accounting joins OLI as Dean of School of Business Management Seven papers(10/6) reported this.

15. Radio publicity for UST Mrs Miranda Choy of ARR and Mr King Cheng of OPA attended an evening phone-in programme(1/7) for secondary students on RTHK's Radio 5 and answered students' enquiries on UST.

16. JAL Scholarship Programme `94 There were 7 press reports(9/6-6/7) which noted that a UST student, Twinnie Tso Sau-ching, was one of the three local tertiary students who received the scholarships.

17. Narrow escape for Prof C.C. Yang of Math. In their reports on an incident at Kai Tak Airport on 6/6 in which a Dragonair plane had to make an emergency landing, 4 papers(7/6) noted that Prof Yang was among the passengers. He was also interviewed, and described the experience in vivid and scientific terms.

18. Dr Kot See-chun of MECH comments on computer software for aviation In a follow-up report on the incident at Kai Tak Airport on 6/6, HK Standard(8/6) interviewed Dr Kot.

19. UST students' union In 2 related reports in SCMP(2/6), the paper noted that students were not very eager to join the union.

20. UST provides assistance to its graduates As our publicity efforts to promote this year's graduates, a UST spokesman was interviewed by Ming Pao(6/6). 21. UST's first batch of graduates in computer science Our press release on this topic was picked up by Eastern Express(16/5).

22. UST campus listed as one the 10 best sceneries in HK As a result of a contest held by a TVB variety programme to select the 10 most scenic spots in HK in which UST was selected, HK Commercial Daily(12/7) carried a feature on UST as a tourist spot. The paper also mentioned this again in another feature(21/6) (The contest was mentioned in review nos. 11 and 15/94.)

23. UST for tourists Ming Pao(5/6) carried a photo feature on UST and introducing items of attraction to tourists.

24. "Preventing failure of computer systems" In a story with this title, HK Business(5/94) interviewed Prof Kalle Lyytinen of BINF.

25. HK Stadium to ask EPD for excessive noise alerts in concerts In two reports on this issue, HK Standard(4 and 6/6) said that one of the 3 letters received by the govt. on measures to solve the noise issue at the HK Stadium came from Dr To Wai-ming of MECH.

26. UST workshop on art and politics in Chinese society This workshop organised by HUM and held at UST on 4 and 11/6 was mentioned by 3 papers (3,7,12/6). Our press release was issued on 1/6.

27. UST's IES awarded a contract to study eco-labelling system for exporters Both SCMP(8/6) and HK Standard(7/6) reported that IES was awarded this $2 M contract by the Industry Dept.

28. "Genetic engineers allowed free rein" In a report with this title, SCMP(27/6) mentioned that Dr Raymond S.C.Wong of BICH was working on genetic engineering of brassica plants to improve their disease and heat resistance.

29. UST promotes effective technical communication for students Our press release on a compulsory credit course in technical communication designed by the Language Centre was picked up by 7 papers(19/6-7/7).

30. Prof Yuk-Shee Chan, Dean of SBM, joins Heng Seng Bank's Hang Seng Index Advisory Committee Window(24/6) and 4 papers(22/6-8/7) reported this.

31. UST holds seminar on agricultural development on Hainan Our press release on this seminar in 6/94 was picked up by (23/6) and HK Economic Journal (27/6).

32. A personal profile of Mr Simon Kwan, architect for UST Mr Kwan's profile was published by Ming Pao(23/6). Mr Kwan talked about the building of UST.

33. UST introduces new titles to faculty members Ming Pao(22/6) and Sing Tao Daily(20/6) reported that UST had introduced the American system in titles for faculty members. The paper noted that CUHK was also considering the same system. 34. Theft at UST Ming Pao(27/6) reported that UST management had recently sent a message to all staff and urged them to be alert.

35. Mr Luke Wong, Director of SAO, heads a delegation of student affairs officers at tertiary institutions in HK to visit Beijing. Wen Wei Po(1/6) reported this visit in late 4/94.

36. "Girls on the verge of a scientific breakthrough" In a feature with this title, SCMP(7/6) interviewed a number of female university students, including Miss Carol Chow Suk-yee of Biology at UST.

37. UST activities on SCMP's Campus Bulletin Board Some of UST's academic activities were mentioned by the Bulletin Board column(23/6-14/7)

38. Dr Ding Xueliang of SOSC talked about democracy in China Dr Ding's article was published by Yazhou Zhoukan(5/6)

39. UST scientists attends 2nd HK Science Conference Both HK Economic Journal(17/6) and Wen Wei Po(16/6) reported that scientists from local tertiary institutions and relevant government depts attended the conference held in HK on 18/6.

40. "Scientists hope to use plane for air quality tests in HK" HK Standard(27/6) carried a story with this title in which Prof Gary Heinke, Director of IES was interviewed. He talked about UST's project to use the twin-propeller King Air plane to measure pollutants in the atmosphere.

41. UST and CUHK jointly organise an international conference on autonomy in language learning Wen Wei Po(17/6) picked up our press release on this conference held in 6/94.

42. SOFTMAGE software donation to UST Wen Wei Po(17/6) picked up our press release on this donation (US$1,600,000).

43. UST's first patent granted Sing Tao Daily(2/6) picked up our press release on a UST research project to produce diamond film from common plastic. The research team was headed by Prof Hiroyuki Hiraoka of CHEM.

44. "Academics step up action on benefits" In a story with this title, SCMP(6/6) noted that in 1989, the former Chief Secretary, Sir David Ford, backed a review of the rules on university benefits that discriminated against staff from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Macau, but the government did not follow through. The paper said the revelation followed a recent meeting of staff at UST on the differences in benefits between local and expatriate staff.

45. DR Peiyuan Qian of BIO talked about his research on abalone (23/6) interviewed Dr Qian on this research which was mentioned in the media reviews earlier.

46. Wen Wei Po's campus column on UST The paper carried 5 minor articles(11/6-2/7) written by anonymous writers from UST on life on campus. 47. Dr Francis Lui of Economics talks about MFN status for China and the 75 anniversary of the May Fourth Movement in China These 2 articles were published by HK Economic Journal(4/5 and 1/6).

48. Seven articles written by Dr Joseph Lin of Economics The articles were carried by HK Economic Journal(2/6-14/7).

49. Seven articles written by Dr K.C. Wei of Finance The articles were carried by HK Economic Journal(2/6-15/7).

50. UST administrators visit tertiary institutions in Beijing HK Economic Journal(8-9/6) carried a two-part article written by Mr King Cheng of OPA in which he mentioned about this visit in April and his observations of lives of Chinese intellectuals during the visit.
