  • SN 6738 - Cornwall Census Returns, 1851
this document has been created by the History Data Service (HDS) SN 6738 - Cornwall Census Returns, 1851 This study contains a complete transcript of the Cornwall returns of the census of 1851. Using microfiche loaned to the project by the LDS, volunteers, recruited online transcribed the pages of the enumerators’ books for the Cornwall 1851 census. Other volunteers checked the data using Free Census software. Finally, the organiser validated the data, using yet another piece of Free Census software. The data was collected in 1851. The raw data was in the form of microfiche, organised in accordance with the PRO regulations. Copyright is held by the Crown and TNA confirmed that publishing the transcripts online is allowed. • CORNISH CHURCHES in the DECORATED STYLE, C. 1260–1350
CORNISH CHURCHES IN THE DECORATED STYLE, c. 1260–1350 Although most Cornish churches are mainly or entirely in the Perpendicular style, there is more Dec work in Cornwall than is often appreciated, & any judgment of the achievements of this period needs to bear in mind the fundamental point that the most important work has been destroyed. Monastic sites with important building programmes in this period The two most ambitious works of the period were those at Launceston Priory and Glasney College, Penryn. Both have been demolished and are known only from excavated remains, including their architectural fragments. Glasney was closely related to the Exeter Cathedral, both in design and building stones, including work closely related to two major national figures: THOMAS WITNEY and WILLIAM JOY. Launceston Priory shows more mixed connections. The rib profiles are close to work at Bristol, the likely source of architect, since this was a house of the Augustinian Canons, but the choir screen and floor-tiles are Exeter works, and Exeter was surely the source of its remarkably complex tracery. Parish churches with stylistic links to Exeter Cathedral St Ive Closest and perhaps the most important survival, probably resulting from the connections of Bartholomew de Castro, the ‘right-hand-man’ of Bishop Grandisson. Related to this, a group of works, mainly in south-east Cornwall with closely related features of c. 1325–50: South Hill, Sheviock, Tywardreath St Germans and St Michael Penkevil. Also linked to this group: the ?shrine arch at St Neot; St Columb Major – surprisingly ambitious, the caps very similar to those at Exeter Cathedral .

  • Landrake Parish Church
A BRIEF HISTORY OF LANDRAKE PARISH CHURCH We think of the River Tamar as marking the boundary between Cornwall and the rest of England, but back in the time of the Saxons the River Lynher was more of a boundary between Saxon England and the Celts. Villages to the east of the Lynher had Saxon name derivations (eg, -ton) while the majority to the west of the Lynher were Celtic in origin (eg, Tre-). This being the case, the village of Landrake, standing close to the lowest crossing point of the river, was an important route centre. Sites chosen for a church in earlier times were often on top of a hill. Everyone could see it and it would be above all other buildings. It had to be in a position which could easily be reached by local people, and often it was a place of refuge from enemies as well as a place of worship. The earliest reference to the present church in Landrake was in 1018 when King Cnut granted land to Bishop Burwhold for his life and then to pass to the Holy Germanies. This marked the connection with the priory at St Germans, whose monks were responsible for taking the services in Landrake. Landrake is also mentioned in the Exeter edition of the Domesday Book of 1086 which states that there was a wood and wattle church of Saxon origin at Landrake. About 135 churches were built in Cornwall under the Normans but many traces of their work remain unrecognisable today due to enlargement or rebuilding.

Passengers came from Torpoint, Landrake, Saltash and Devonport – forty-five in total. Departure was on Sunday morning of the 17th crossing the bridge in a journey towards The Lakes. A brief stop was made at Exeter Services to meet the needs of some of the party and to purchase provision for lunch. Then it was on to the Gloucester Services for our luncheon stop.
