Tv Land's “The Soul Man” TV LAND’S “THE SOUL MAN” NAMES BILL MARTIN AND MIKE SCHIFF AS SHOWRUNNERS FOR SEASON FOUR Sherri Shepherd Returns to the Sitcom for a 10-Episode Arc New York, NY – November 4, 2014 – TV Land announced today that season four of the network’s hit sitcom “The Soul Man,” starring Cedric “The Entertainer” and Niecy Nash, will be helmed by Bill Martin and Mike Schiff, who hail from the hit comedies “3rd Rock From The Sun” and “Grounded for Life.” Also new for the upcoming season of “The Soul Man” is the return of the lively and lovely comedienne Sherri Shepherd, who is back for 10 of the season’s 12 episodes as Nikki, Boyce Ballentine’s (Cedric) unpredictable cousin. Nikki, who was last seen hawking sex toys to the elder ladies of Boyce and Lolli’s (Nash) church, always has some new business that’s causing trouble and wreaking havoc in the Ballentines’ lives. “The Soul Man” is set to return to TV Land in 2015. “The Soul Man” follows R&B super-star-turned minister Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine after he relocated from Las Vegas to St. Louis with his wife Lolli. While they’re always adjusting to their new modest life, they have plenty of obstacles in their way, including Boyce’s brother Stamps (Wesley Jonathan), who is only just beginning to grow up and get his own place…finally. Cedric “The Entertainer” will next be seen co-starring with Chris Rock in the upcoming Paramount comedy “Top Five” in theatres on December 5th. Nash is currently in HBO’s "Getting On" and will be seen in Paramount Pictures’ “Selma” which is directed by Ava DuVernay and co-produced by Brad Pitt and Oprah Winfrey also in theatres in December. Shepherd recently made her Broadway debut in the Tony® Award-winning musical, “Cinderella,” in which she played the first black evil stepmother opposite Keke Palmer as the eponymous character. The sitcom, which follows Cedric as R&B super-star-turned minister Reverend Boyce “The Voice” Ballentine, is the network’s highest-rated original series among African Americans P25-54 and African American Women 25-54. Over the course of four seasons, the series averaged a 2.20 AA P25-54 rating and a 2.65 rating among AA W25-54. Last season, “The Soul Man” averaged a 1.07 rating among African American P25-54 viewers, up +365% compared to the TV Land prime average among the demo and among AA W25-54, Season 4 averaged a 1.32 rating, up +340% compared to the TV Land prime average. As everyone clasps hands, he reminds them how fortunate they are to be part of such a fun loving, hardworking and inclusive production. It’s a fitting scene, since many episodes of The Soul Man begin with his character, world-famous R&B artist- turned-pastor Boyce Ballentine, addressing his congregants — and the audience — straight on. Then, it’s 5:00 p.m. Show time! The cast, Cedric, Niecy Nash, Wesley Jonathan, John Beasley and Missi Pyle, dance between takes, improvise their lines, and crack jokes. The live studio audience feeds off this energy; in fact, a few brave souls show off their own singing and dancing skills. Created by Suzanne Martin and Cedric the Entertainer and produced by Hazy Mills and Bird and A Bear Entertainment, The Soul Man follows Boyce, his loving, glamorous wife Lolli (Nash), carefree younger brother Stamps (Jonathan) and pious father (Beasley) as they adapt to a more modest lifestyle in St. Louis, out of the Las Vegas spotlight. Her call continues to challenge current stand-up comics to acknowledge intersectionality, particularly the perspectives of women of color, and to encourage comics to actively intervene in unsettling the notion that our U.S. culture is “post-gendered” or “post-racial.” This dissertation examines ways in which comics are heeding bell hooks’s call to action, focusing on the work of stand-up artists who forge a bridge between comedy and political activism by performing intersectional perspectives that expand their work beyond the entertainment value of the stage.
