Maldon & Real & Cider Pub Guide

7th Edition - 2020

INTRODUCTION

ABOUT THIS GUIDE

The AND DENGIE Branch of the Campaign for (CAMRA) has compiled this guide to assist residents and visitors who enjoy visiting pubs and drinking real draught and cider. It lists all pubs located in the MALDON AND DENGIE CAMRA area of (please see the map on centre pages). Entries marked with GBG 2020 are included in the 2020 edition of CAMRA’s “Good Beer Guide”.

Information given can change without notice. It is always best to phone in advance if you wish to eat at a specific pub or drink a particular beer or cider. There is an increasing tendency for quieter pubs to curtail their opening hours, not to open on Sunday evenings, or even at all on Mondays.

MALDON AND DENGIE BREWERIES

We are extremely fortunate that our area of Essex has four excellent independent breweries, namely Crouch Vale, Maldon Brewing Company, Mighty Oak, and Wibblers. Their fine can be found in many of the pubs listed in this guide.

TRADITIONAL PUBS

Quite a few of our area's pubs have a totally unspoilt feel to them, thanks in part to being owned by the family firm of Gray & Sons (Chelmsford) Ltd, whose pubs are as you remember them from years gone by. Many are simply but comfortably furnished, offering real ale from an enormous choice of breweries from around the UK.

CLUBS

For the first time the guide lists any club in our area that allows the public to enter freely, though you may have to sign in as a guest at the door.

CAMRA - WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

CAMRA, the , is an independent, voluntary organisation campaigning for real ale, community pubs and consumer rights. Currently, CAMRA has over 190,000 members across the world, and is described as the most successful consumer campaign in Europe. CAMRA supports well-run pubs as the centres of community life – whether in rural or urban areas – and believe their continued existence plays a critical social role in UK culture. We also support the pub as the one place in which to consume real ale (also known as cask-conditioned beer, or cask ale), real cider and perry.

The Maldon & Dengie Branch of CAMRA has some 480 members; we might be one of the smallest branches nationally, but we pride ourselves on being a very active branch, organising two annual beer festivals and undertaking many campaigning activities. We also have a very lively social calendar, with a variety of events to suit everyone such as pub walks, minibus trips and games evenings.

MALDON BEER AND CIDER FESTIVAL

Maldon and Dengie CAMRA hosts two beer and cider festivals each year. The larger festival is held at the Plume School in Maldon. The 2020 festival will be held in the Easter school holiday, but the exact dates have yet to be finalised. There will be some 60 to try over the four days, though only about 35 are on sale at any time, together with a range of some 15 ciders and perries. Food is available lunchtimes and evenings.

SOUTH WOODHAM FERRERS BEER AND CIDER FESTIVAL

Our other beer and cider festival is held in South Woodham Ferrers. The 2020 festival will be held from the 1st to the 3rd of October. The venue is the Village Hall, in Hullbridge Road. Although this festival is smaller than the Maldon festival, and only runs for three days, all 35 beers and ten ciders and perries go on sale from the start.

WHATPUB

Maldon and Dengie CAMRA, like many other branches of CAMRA, use the National Beer Scoring System (NBSS) within “WhatPub” to select pubs and clubs for the Campaign’s “Good Beer Guide”. A five point scale, (with half-point increments) is used to judge beer quality. Using this system, any member from any branch may record the quality of beer they have been served in any pub and some clubs. If you are a CAMRA member, we want you to tell us about the quality of beer you have drunk when visiting any pub or club in our area. Local members also get to vote for their branch Pub of the Year.

To take part you should submit your scores on the “WhatPub” website using your CAMRA membership number and password. Once you have agreed to the terms and conditions and found the pub or club on the site you can start scoring.

What do the scores mean?

0 - No cask ale is available.

1 – Poor. Beer that is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with considerable resentment. (In the editor’s opinion if the beer is of this poor quality the server should be politely informed of this and a replacement sought).

2 - Average. Competently kept, drinkable pint that does not inspire in any way, not worth moving to another pub but you drink the beer without really noticing.

3 - Good. Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again.

4 - Very Good. Excellent beer in excellent condition.

5 - Perfect. Probably the best you’re ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely.

Non-members of CAMRA may use the “WhatPub” (www.whatpub.com) website too, to access details on around 35,500, (96%) of Britain’s pubs which serve real ale. Each entry provides information on opening hours, the beers served, location, description etc. It is free to use. You can also search by town or village to find a pub you might like to visit but whose name you cannot remember.

WEBSITE Details of our campaigning activities, beer festivals and pub news can be found on our web site www.maldonanddengiecamra.org.uk. We also have a Facebook group page.

WHY NOT JOIN CAMRA?

We always welcome new members to support our campaign. You can complete a membership application form (which can be found on the inside back cover of this guide), or you can join online at www.camra.org.uk Benefits include a monthly newspaper, a quarterly magazine, CAMRA discount vouchers to the value of £30.00, which may be used when buying real ale, cider or perry at J D Wetherspoon, Stonegate or Brains managed pubs and reduced or free entrance into CAMRA beer festivals where a charge is made. Additionally some 3000 pubs offer great discount benefits to card- carrying CAMRA members (including several pubs in this Guide).
