Record crowd of 19,151 Fr. K Jonathan Cruz tied mark with 3 FGM Fr. K Jonathan Cruz sets Fr. record with 54-yd. FG Appalachian State scored 21 unanswered points in the second half, courtesy of two big plays and a fumble recovery in the end zone to pull away from Charlotte for a 45-9 victory in front of a re- cord crowd of 19,151 at Charlotte’s Stadium. “That was one of a kind,” 49ers safety Ben DeLuca said of the record crowd. “You sign up to come to Charlotte for these opportu- nities. We didn’t execute tonight but our season is far from over. It was a unique opportunity and we want the fans to come back.” Mountaineer QB Zac Thomas was perfect on the night, complet- ing all 14 passes for 295 yards and three TDs. The 49ers put together three scoring drives in the first half while App State had four. App State took advantage with three TDs while Charlotte kicked three field goals as the Mountaineers opened up a 24-9 halftime lead. In the second half, the Mountaineers exploded for big plays, in- cluding a 59-yard punt return, a 90-yard pass and the fumble recov- ery in the endzone for its three TDs. Charlotte was held to 203 yards of total offense, including 99 in the second half. App State forced two turnovers, had 9.0 tackles for loss, three sacks and seven QB hurries. Charlotte QB Chris Reynolds was 12-of-22 for 108 passing yards. In the second half, Reynolds was 4-of-9 for 35 yards. Trailing 10-0, Charlotte got on the board in the second quar- ter when true freshman Jonathan Cruz kicked a 46-yard field goal with 9:05 left to play. A 27-yard pass from Thomas to Corey Sutton extended the Mountaineers lead to 17-3 but Cruz added a 49ers’ freshman record 54-yard field goal with 1:37 left in the half. App State drove quickly to score another TD while Charlotte added an- other Cruz field goal, from 48 yards, to make it 24-9 at the break. In the third quarter, Thomas Hennigan returned a 49ers’ punt 59 yards for a TD and in the fourth quarter Thomas connected with Sutton for a 90-yard TD. An Austin Exford fumble recovery in the end zone gave App State the final 45-9 advantage. All three of Cruz’s field goals were longer than the 49ers’ previ- ous freshman record for longest field goal made. His 54-yarder is the second longest in school history.
