Project Information

Comparative historical studies of ideological production and cross-national values surveys have shown associations between changes in social conditions and changes in the dominant sociopolitical discourses and people’s value orientations in the contemporary Middle East and North . It is, however, unclear how changes in these conditions explain changes in discourses and values. To better understand the dynamic of change and advance a mechanismic explanation of change in values and political engagement, this project has launched a panel study in Egypt, Tunisia, and Turkey. This panel study intends to explain (1) changes in sociopolitical and cultural values; (2) examine how variation in participation in such activities as peaceful demonstrations, political protests, and political violence is linked to changes in (a) inter-group relations, (b) identity and framing, (c) attitudes toward the West and liberal values, (d) religious fundamentalism, (e) dysphoric emotions and personal efficacy, and (f) sources of news information (the Internet, satellite TV, mobiles); (3) assess how people’s perceptions of corruption and trustworthiness of public officials are linked to political action and conflict; and (4) evaluate the implications of this study for peace and security.

Data Description:

In Egypt, of the nationally representative sample of 3,496 adult respondents interviewed in 2011, 2,430 respondents were contacted and re-interviewed between August and December 2016, a response rate of 70%. There were also 1,428 additional interviews to replenish the panel. Panel data consists of 2,430 respondents from each wave. Cross-sectional data consists of 3,496 completed interviews for 2011 and 3,858 completed interview for 2016.

In Tunisia, of the nationally representative sample of 3,070 adult respondents interviewed in 2013, 2,391 respondents were contacted and re-interviewed in 2015, a response rate of 78%.

In Turkey, of the nationally representative sample of 3,019 adult respondents interviewed in 2013, 1,683 were contacted and re-interviewed between February and July 2016, a response rate of 56%. There were also an additional 1,077 interviews to replenish the panel data. Panel data consists of 1,682 respondents from each wave. Cross-sectional data consists of 3,019 completed interviews for 2013 and 2,759 completed interviews for 2016.

The two waves of panel and cross-sectional data are cleaned and merged into a single data file, for which this codebook provides detailed information regarding the file structure.

Coverage: Egypt, Turkey, Tunisia.

Codebook Organization

There are four types of variables in the cross-sectional survey dataset: administrative variables, panel variables that were repeated in both T1 and T2; wave-specific variables that were only included in one or two of the surveys; and interviewer-level variables for waves/countries as are available.

Variables are organized in the codebook as follows: 1. Administrative variables, indicating the wave of survey by _T1 and _T2 (e.g., governorate, PSU code, etc) 2. All panel variables, ordered consecutively according to variable name (i.e., V1_T1, V1_T2, V2_T1, etc….) 3. All wave-specific variables, ordered consecutively, with all T1 variables listed , followed by all T2 variables 4. Interviewer-level variables

All missing values share the same value labels, and these are not repeated throughout the codebook for the sake of efficiency: -1 Do not know -2 No answer -3 Not applicable -4 Not asked -5 Missing; Unknown

Administrative Variables (pages 4 - 8)

Administrative variables include those referring to identification of country, identification of type of respondent, result code data for panel respondents, interview time/date, sampling data, and weights.

Panel Variables (pages 9 - 82)

All variables that appear in both waves of the surveys in at least two of the three countries have variable names in the following format:

V1_T1 V1_T2

The designation _1 indicates that the data is from the first wave of the survey (Time 1), and _2 indicates data from the second wave (Time 2).

Response codes for _T1 and _T2 variables are identical unless specifically noted as otherwise.

Note that there are several exceptions; where there are a series of variables on the same topic, but specific items in the series occur only in one wave (e.g., several items on religious fundamentalism), these items are retained in the panel variable series to maintain continuity.

Wave-specific variables (pages 83 - 144)

Variables that appear in only one wave have variable names in the following format:

T1_V83_TN

Variable names beginning with T1_ indicate that the variable was asked only in the first wave (Time 1), and the number in the variable name reflects the number of that variable in the original dataset in T1. The appendage of _TN, in the above example, indicates that this variable appeared in the T1 data for Tunisia, as V83. 2

Therefore, t1_v106 refers to the original variable in the 2013 (T1) questionnaire in Tunisia, which asks respondents about “likelihood of signing a petition”, and this question was not repeated in 2015 (T2). It was also not asked in either wave in Turkey or Egypt.

Some variables were asked only one wave, but in more than one country, and appear in this format:

T1_V142_EG_V139_TK_V140_TN

This variable name indicates that the question was asked in T1, and appeared in the Egypt 2011 questionnaire as V142, in the Turkey 2013 questionnaire as V139, and in the Tunisia 2013 questionnaire as V140.

Interviewer-level variables (pages 145-146)

Limited interviewer-level demographic data was collected, and is included in this dataset.
