MAYOR’S MESSAGE CV ad.indd 1 8/11/2016 2:59:04PM PM 2:59:04 8/11/2016 1 ad.indd CV The Importance of Public Service and Volunteerism We have accomplished so many amazing things as Hillsboro's City Council in recent years, following the example set by previous Hillsboro Councils and community members who gave their time, energy, and ideas to make life better. Now, as we prepare to welcome a new group of Councilors in January, it’s important to recognize that we depend upon community- minded people to continue our City’s progress. How can we invest in our shared community experience? Through public service and volunteerism at events such as HillsDOer Day, by applying to serve on a City of Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey board or commission, or running for elected office. Those of us who call Hillsboro home can get involved in so many ways, and it doesn’t take a year-long commitment. Mayor’s Message: The Importance of Public Service and Volunteerism continued from page 1 As a community, we have built , providing job opportunities for hundreds of youth, a dynamic playing field for our schools’ sports teams, and a home for our two-time Northwest League Champion Hillsboro Hops. We have renovated and expanded our libraries, moved forward with exciting enhancements in the Downtown, Orenco Station, and AmberGlen neighborhoods, and laid the groundwork for the creation of jobs in North Hillsboro and much-needed housing in South Hillsboro. Our work has yielded so many positive outcomes, and at the core of each accomplishment you will find the people who helped move an idea along from start to finish. We have many time demands placed on us in our modern society, but finding the time to give back to our community is time well spent. Thank you to everyone who invests in Hillsboro through public service and volunteerism.

Additionally, Hillsboro Public Works Department employees examined safety concerns at the intersection of SE Johnson Street and SE 75th Avenue next to Ladd Acres Elementary School (following the auto-pedestrian accident in September that injured a mother and her two children). The driver cited sun glare or sun blindness as a factor in the crash that occurred in the crosswalk. City staff also observed vehicles parked too close to the intersection. Staff then installed signs designating four "No Parking" zones to ensure drivers do not park within 20 feet of the intersection, in accordance with Oregon state law. To ensure our water supply meets the service needs of current and future customers, the City of Hillsboro is developing an additional water source and investing to maintain the aging current system, and to upgrade infrastructure to withstand earthquakes. Source water protection and sampling programs are vital to ensuring that level of confidence. At the same time, the City of Hillsboro Utilities Commission focuses on balancing reliability, quality, and resiliency, with water affordability and overall value. For more than 75 years, the City of Hillsboro has provided safe, reliable water to customers at rates that are among the lowest in the region. On October 1, water rates across all customer classes increased by nine percent. For the average residential customer, that increase translates into $2.43 per month, or $4.86 per bi-monthly bill. Even with an increase, Hillsboro’s water rates remain competitive for the Portland-metro area. A Colorful Welcome Did You Know?
