TONIGHT’S GAME

The Flyers conclude a back-to-back set with the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden tonight, their 47th game of the season and 24th on the road. The Flyers are 21-18-7 on the year after a 3-2 win over the Rangers here last night. The Flyers headed into this back-to-back off their first three- day break in the schedule since they were sidelined under COVID protocols from Feb. 8-17; it was their final one of that length, with only one two-day break remaining over the final 11 games of the season. After this back-to-back, the Flyers are headed back home to host the New Jersey Devils on Sunday evening.

Thursday, April 22, 2021 – Flyers 3, NY Rangers 2 at Madison Square Garden: James van Riemsdyk scored two power play goals - one with his face - and Jake Voracek secured the game-winner with 5:53 left in the third period as the Flyers took a 3-2 victory in the first of back-to-back games between the teams at Madison Square Garden. The Rangers struck first when Brendan Smith scored 9:55 into the opening period to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. van Riemsdyk’s first goal came with 4:04 left in the second when a shot from Travis Konecny was deflected upward and off the side of van Riemsdyk’s jaw before bouncing past Igor Shesterkin to tie the score at 1-1 at the second intermission. van Riemsdyk returned to the game and scored his second PPG with 9:31 left in the third period to give the Flyers the 2-1 lead. Voracek’s eventual game-winner came just over 3 ½ minutes later to make it a 3-1 contest; the Rangers pulled Shesterkin late and that allowed Artemi Panerin to convert a 6-on-5 opportunity with two minutes remaining, but Brian Elliott stood tall with the last couple of his 33 saves to secure the win. Shesterkin also made 33 saves in absorbing the loss. Stars of the Game: 1 – Brian Elliott; 2 – James van Riemsdyk; 3 – Ivan Provorov.
