Suzi Subeck, Chairman Bill Arlinghaus On Board 6, Ralph demonstrated the great instincts for which he is known. Appeals Panel: Cheri Bjerkan Ralph opened 1C. Stan overcalled 4H. Nick and I passed, and Ralph jumped Rich DeMartino to the club slam!! Marty Fleisher Marty Hirschman George Jacobs Stan led the DA… intending to win the trick and wait for his other trick in Chip Martel the trump suit. Lew Stansby Stan Subeck Ralph ruffed the diamond, played the ace/king of spades pitching a heart from dummy. He played a third round of spades and Stan was helpless. Bulletin Editor Suzi Subeck Stan ruffed with the CJ and exited the CK. Ralph won in hand and claimed. Photographer Peg Kaplan -1540 for us! 16.6 IMPs to East/West No one else bid the slam. Most pairs played in 4H. During the post mortem, we realized that had Stan led a heart, we could have defeated the contract. This is not at all obvious but on a heart lead, declarer wins the HA and cashes the SA and SK discarding a heart from dummy. Next he trumps a heart and trumps a diamond. He leads a spade and South must discard the DA!!!! If declarer tries to trump a diamond to his hand, South overruffs and plays a trump. Declarer finds himself left with a losing spade… The double might have helped declarer, but who wouldn’t double with two trump honors over the club bidder and a side ace in an unbid suit? This Just In...Just This 4 Teams Lall Online Justin UNITED STATES BRIDGE CHAMPIONSHIPS And maybe the double was no help at all… Interestingly, if Katz had simply bid and made 5C, he would won 12 IMPs! 1 “TRIALS” AND TRIBULATIONS—PRE-BULLETIN There are 32 teams entered and listed in alphabetic order. Expected In-Behavior Just as all kinds of competitive-type endeavors have their expected in- behavior, so does duplicate bridge. One important thing to keep in mind is that this is a competitive adventure.....as opposed to the social outing that you may be used to at your rubber bridge games. Now that is not to say that you can=t be sociable at the duplicate table. Of course you can.....and should.....just don=t carry it to extreme by talking during the auction or play.

Landen was playing with Pratap Rajadhyaksha; their teammates were Dan Morse-Bobby Wolff and Adam Wildavsky-Doug Doub. With one round to go, three teams were closely bunched: Landen, Malcolm Brachman (Chris Compton, Mike Passell, Claudio Nunes, Fulvio Fantoni) and Nick Nickell (Richard Freeman, Jeff Meckstroth, Eric Rodwell, Bob Hamman, Paul Soloway). Brachman split their round – 1.5 to 1.5 – while Nickell got only 1 on the round. That put Landen on top with 33.14, followed by Richard Schwartz (Michael Becker, David Berkowitz, Larry Cohen, Zia Mahmood, Michael Rosenberg) with 31.12 and Nickell with 30.65. Landen and Rajadhyaksha claimed their second North American championship as a partnership; they won Open Pairs II at the 2000 Spring NABC in Cin- cinnati.
