Sheep & Goats will be in here. Stop by to view the different breeds of animals that provide us with fiber. Talk to various farms about their fiber related businesses.

Sheep Show is for breeding and Market Stock and Showmanship Clinic and Competition. Classes will be broken down by competitor’s age.

Dog Herding Competition will be held both Saturday and Sunday sponsored by Land of Lincoln Border Collie Association. Watch a sheep dog herd sheep around a field, fences, gates or enclosures as directed by their handlers.

Crafters and Vendors will be throughout the fairgrounds selling finished fiber products (quilts, bags, felted pictures, baskets, and other beautiful items) and high quality fiber tools, and fabrics that any artesian or craft lover will want to purchase.

Classes and Workshops we will have instructors teaching different skill sets at different experience levels. The classes will focus on spinning, , painting with fiber, knitting and fiber animal management.

Demonstrations will be going on throughout the grounds on various fiber relates activities such as spinning, sheep shearing, skirting fleece, and more! Watch the demos and learn new skills!

Fairground Rules and Regulations for ALL EXHIBITORS AND SPECTATORS:

1. Fair gates will open at 9:00 am for the public. 2. The Board of Directors reserves the right to cancel any and all events and premiums in case of a calamity, storms, or any unavoidable circumstance. 3. The Fair Association is not responsible for loss of, injury to, or damage to persons, animals, or property due to fire, theft, or any other cause. 4. NO DOGS ALLOWED ON THE GROUNDS unless approved by the Board of Directors to be used for an act or show or it is a registered service dog. 5. No weapon may be brought to the Fair, at any time, except those permitted to be carried by police officers and those that may be a part of an approved sales display. Definition-Weapons: A knife, except common kitchen and cooking knives, pocket knives with a blade no longer than 3 ¼”, or the knives on a Leatherman type hand tool; devices from which a projectile can be fired, except a tool used for construction or maintenance type activities; electronic devices such as stun guns and Taser guns; firearms of all types and sizes, whether loaded or unloaded; clubs that are not tools; bows, arrows, sling-shots, crossbows, metal knuckles, nunchucks, stars and other similar devices. 6. Picketing or protestors shall only be permitted within a designated area of the parking lot outside of the main gate fence of the fairground activities. 7. All gates will be locked at 6 pm. Parking regulations will be strictly enforced. Please cooperate and park in the designated areas. 8. No alcohol is allowed on the fairgrounds. This policy will be strictly enforced. The possession or sale of any liquor or other intoxicants is strictly prohibited. This rule will be rigidly enforced. 9. Rules and Regulations must be adhered to. Infringement of rules or anyone conducting themselves in a disorderly or unsportsmanlike conduct will be brought before the discipline committee and handled accordingly. Premiums maybe withheld. 10. Anyone creating or causing a disturbance shall be removed from the grounds by security. 11. Final interpretation of the rules will be up to the McHenry County Fair Association Executive Committee. 12. NO REFUNDS FOR ENTRIES MADE AND NOT ENTERED. 13. NO REFUNDS FOR TICKETS PURCHASED AT THE GATES. 14. Tobacco Use Guidelines: The McHenry County Fair Association shall: a. Prohibit the use of tobacco in all buildings, barns, grandstands and some other public gathering areas, designating smoking areas within the grounds; b. Post signage identifying both areas where smoking is prohibited and where it is allowed; c. Prohibit advertising of tobacco products on the fairgrounds, d. Prohibit the sale of tobacco on the fairgrounds; e. Prohibit the distribution of free tobacco products on the fairgrounds; f. Refuse to accept money directly from a tobacco company for sponsorship or prize money; g. Extend this policy to other individuals, groups or agencies that rent or lease the property.

Fairground Rules and Regulations for NON-LIVESTOCK/HOME ARTS SHOWS:

1. The Shows are open to anyone 8 years and over by January 1, 2019 and from any local. 2. All entries must be turned in at the Fair Office by 4 pm on Thursday, May 30, 2019. No entries or changes will be accepted after that date. NO ENTRIES WILL BE TAKEN OVER THE PHONE OR FAX. 3. Use a separate entry page for each different department being entered. Additional entry pages can be found on our website (www.mchenrycountfair.com) or at the McHenry County Fair Office. 4. Non-livestock/Home Art exhibits will be released on SUNDAY June 2, from 2 pm - 4 pm, exhibits may not be removed before then. Any exhibits that remain unclaimed after 4 pm on the Friday, June 7, 2019, will be donated or discarded. 5. Special rules relative to specific exhibits will be listed at the beginning of each department. 6. No premiums will be awarded or paid for any article unworthy of competition, if any exhibit is removed prior to listed dismissal times, and/or if there are any issues with the Code of Conduct. If Code of Conduct is broken the exhibitor and their exhibits will be asked to leave the grounds. 7. Superintendents have the right to reject entries that are unworthy of competition such as unclean, or otherwise unsuitable to compete. The superintendents’ ruling is final. Furthermore, the superintendent may designate the requirements for any Class. 8. Superintendent reserves the right to disqualify any item that does not qualify for a specific category. Exhibitors are encouraged to contact the Superintendent to define categories, if necessary. 9. Judges have been carefully selected. All persons making entries accept these judges and agree to abide by their decisions. Protest upon any other grounds, or against other than judges, must be made in writing no later than 4 pm on the day of the show and shall be given to the Superintendent of the department concerned, who shall present such protest to the Fair Officials. The decisions of the Superintendents and Fair Officials shall be final. 10. When you pick your items up you must sign for them and verify your address. Premium checks will be mailed out by Friday June 7, 2019. 11. All special awards, such as trophies, plaques etc. shall be awarded during the Fair. No special awards will be ordered after the Fiber Festival is completed. 12. Exhibitors or agents making or causing any false statement regarding articles or interfering with the judge or superintendent shall be excluded from any further competition and any premiums awarded shall be forfeited. All entries must be made in the name of the creator of the entry. 13. Entries must have been made within the last year and may not have been previously entered in The McHenry County Fair’s Spring Fiber Festival. 14. Exhibitors must classify their own articles into the proper Class and Lot to show. 15. All ratings must remain on exhibit throughout the Fiber Festival. 16. All entries MUST be the sole creation, design and executed by the entrant. 17. The McHenry County Fair Association will take every precaution to safeguard entries, however, the Fair Association will NOT be held responsible for any damage or loss that might occur.

KNITTING SMALL CIRCLES IN THE ROUND

Saturday June 1, 2019 – 10:00 am to 11:30 am Taught by: Mary Jo Harris ([email protected]) Location: Building F Class Level: Intermediate (Know how to cast on, knit, purl, bind off, and join in the round) Class Limit: 3-15 age 10 and older Registration: Required by May 28, 2019 Enrollment Cost: $25 Materials Needed: (*worsted weight yarn, *either two size 8 circular needles – of varying lengths, size 8 flexible double pointed needles, or a size 8 circular needle that is 40” or longer, *Usual knitting supplies)

Do you hate using double pointed needles? Or not made things like hats, sock, and mittens because double pointed needles scare you? In this class we’ll explore ways to knit small circles in the round WITHOUT using traditional double pointed needles. A basic fingerless mitts pattern will be provided for everyone to practice on.

Knowing basic increases and decreases helpful, but not required). Class Limit: 3-15 age 12 and older Registration: Required by May 28, 2019 Enrollment Cost: $35 Materials Needed: worsted weight yarn (no novelty yarn), needles in a size appropriate for your yarn, Paper for taking notes, Pen or Pencil, Stitch markers appropriate for your needles, Usual knitting supplies. Have you always loved the look of knitted lace items but been afraid to make them because they intimidated you? Lace knitting is easier than you think once you know some of the tips and tricks. In this class, students will learn: The composition of knitted lace, some basic knitted lace stitches, how to read a lace chart, lace knitting tips and tricks, and how to make a lace sampler.

LEARNING HOW TO CUT YOUR KNITTING

Saturday June 1, 2019 – 1:00 pm – 3 pm Taught by: Lori Grady ([email protected]) Location: Class Level: Class Limit: 3-15 Registration: Required by May 28, 2019 Enrollment Cost: $45 Materials Needed: your knitting tools, , small hook, yarn large eye needle for finishing, appropriately – sized needles for the button band. You should have a tube of knitting approximately 10 inches around and 4 inches long or an old “Goodwill” sweater to practice on.

In Lori’s class you will learn how to cut your knitting: Steeks will be covered, both crochet and sewing methods. You will learn different variations of finishing steeks and how to set up for a steek. Steeks can be used for the front opening, sleeves, neck, and the actual sleeves.

PAINTING WITH FIBER

Saturday June 2, 2019 – 1:00 pm -3:00 pm Taught by: Janette H Neal - Zopp ([email protected]) Location: Building F Class Level: Age All Class Limit: 10 max Registration: Required by May 28, 2019 Enrollment Cost: $40 Materials Cost: $15 (includes all fibers needed, 3 felting needles 36, 38 and 40 , foam pad and cover, wet felt supplies and Mat board frame and envelope) This class will use a combination of wet and needle felting. You will create a 4 x 6 landscape picture suitable to frame or use as a card. You will learn how to do trees, rocks, grass, leaves, water, flowers, etc. No experience needed just a willingness to have fun as you learn.

Have you ever seen tiny silk cocoons and wondered how to turn them into fluffy layers of fiber called mawatas, also known as hankies and caps? Learn how to soften and spread Bombyx mori silk cocoons (mulberry silk) over frames to make silk hankies and caps for use in spinning, felting, silk fusion, or quilting. There will also be Eri, Muga, and Tussah species of silk cocoons to try. No experience is necessary. Materials Fee includes 80 cocoons, frames for hankies and caps, mesh bags, degumming solution and printed instructions.

EASE INTO SOCK KNITTING: AKA - KNIT A CHRISTMAS STOCKING

Sunday June 2, 2019 – 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Taught by: Mary Jo Harris ([email protected]) Location: Building F Class Level: Intermediate (Know how to cast on, bind off, knit, purl, and knit in the round) Class Limit: 3-15 age 10 and older Registration: Required by May 28, 2019 Enrollment Cost: $35 Materials Needed: Worsted Weight yarn, 2 skeins of the Main Color and 1 skein of the Contrasting Color (if you want a contrasting color), two different 16" or longer circular needles in size appropriate for your yarn, several stitch markers, and usual knitting supplies.

This class is designed for the person that has never knit a sock and still feels a bit intimidated when thinking about knitting socks. Knitting a Christmas Stocking requires the same techniques used to knit a sock. The Stocking uses a worsted weight yarn and only one stocking is made - preventing 'second sock syndrome'. Christmas Stockings can be easily customized or made ‘generic’ too. Participants will learn: Parts of a sock, terms used in sock knitting, ways socks are made, using short rows, and how-to Kitchener Stitch.

TWO COLOR KNITTING – Portuguese Style

Also know (or used to know) the basics of Portuguese Style Knitting. Class Limit: 3-15 age 12 and older Registration: Required by May 28, 2019 Enrollment Cost: $35 Materials needed: $6 for Portuguese Pin: additional pins can be purchased in class if needed. 2 or more different colors of basic worsted weight yarn (no novelty yarn), needles in a size appropriate for your yarn, paper for taking notes, pen or pencil, stitch markers appropriate for your needles, and usual knitting supplies.

This class is for people that know how to purl and knit using the Portuguese Style of Knitting and want to take that knowledge to the next level by “Portuguesing” with two colors. In this class students will learn:

*Portuguese knitting – a quick review

*Several ways of using two colors with one Portuguese Pin

*How to position and set-up a second Portuguese Pin

*How to work stranded knitting using two Portuguese Pins

*How to make an accessory using techniques learned in class

Meet the Instructors

Lori Grady:

Lori learned to knit in elementary school. It was around 2005 when she started knitting sweaters. The first “steeked” sweater was an original design sweater in 2013 which was entered in the Jefferson County Sheep and Wool Festival Original Design Competition. It took first place. With the most recently completed “steeked” sweater, January 31, 2019, she has “steeked” 19 sweaters of various designs. Three of the sweaters took first place at the Jefferson County Sheep and Wool Festival Original Design Competition.

Mary Jo Harris:

Mary Jo Harris lives in the knitting mecca of Madison, WI. She has been a teacher all of her adult life and has formally taught knitting for over 10 years at various Sheep and Wool Festivals, Fiber Festivals, Knit-In's, and teaches locally for Madison College, Olbrich Gardens, and the Wisconsin Craft Market. In the last several years, she has added Chair Caning classes to her teaching repertoire. Mary Jo designs knitting patterns and under her designer name of Jo Harris, has written a book entitled ' - Inside Out' which is available through Amazon or . As an active member of the Madison (WI) Knitters’ Guild and a Wisconsin Craft Market employee, she has an almost constant opportunity to discuss anything and everything knitting-related.

Esther Peregrine:

Esther began raising silkworms a dozen years ago and fell in love with the whole progression of watching the silkworms spin their cocoons, processing the cocoons into yarn or thread and ultimately weaving or knitting a finished silk scarf or shirt. Esther and her silkworms have come to schools, museums, and fiber festivals. She leads workshops on silk reeling and making hankies and cap (mawatas) throughout the Midwest.
