The Wolverines have lost two out of their last three in heart-breaking fashion, a triple-overtime heartbreaker to Penn State and a defeat to in-state rival Mich- igan State last week. Nebraska looked to be headed to back-to-back losses last week following its surprise loss to Minnesota in week 9. But a Hail Mary from a third-string Weekly News saved the Huskers from another shocking “L” to Northwestern. Both teams page 4 come into the game at 6-2 and the winner will stay in the hunt behind Michigan State and takeover second place in the Legends division. Nebraska is expected to be without starting quarterback Taylor Martinez, who has dealt with a myriad of injuries and missed This Week in the four games this year. Michigan starting quarterback Devin Gardiner will play, but likely Big Ten/Pac-12 won’t last long if he is sacked seven times like he was last week against Michigan State. Football is a funny game. Historically, it has been played with hard-nosed, three yards What 2 Watch 4 and a cloud of dust running of the football, maximizing time of possession. But there Who’s Trending? has been a new trend of no huddle, play fast and score as many points as possible in page 6 football. Stanford epitomizes the old style, physical brand of football and has been to a BCS bowl the last three years. Oregon was on the forefront of this new style of foot- , appearing in four straight BCS bowl games. The Cardinal spoiled the Ducks’ 2012 Football 101 campaign, giving Oregon its only loss of the year and bumping the Ducks from the Rose Game. This year looks eerily similar to 2012. Stanford comes in with one loss Fun Fact in conference, while undefeated Oregon looks to be in the driver’s seat in the Pac-12. page 7 Could we have a repeat of last year or will the Ducks get revenge? This is one of the most anticipated games of the year and it appears that it will live up to expectations. All-Century National Game of the Week: Oklahoma at Baylor Nominees Thursday, 4:30 p.m. pt/7:30 p.m. et (Fox Sports 1) page 8 Baylor has been this year’s biggest surprise, leading the nation in , passing offense and scoring, but is also sixth in defensive points against, giving up just 15.9 Social Media points per game. Oklahoma has been the class of the Big 12 over the past few years, Central winning five of the last seven conference championships. Baylor has played what can be page 9 called a less than challenging schedule so far this year, but will face ranked opponents in its next three games, the first of which is Oklahoma. The Sooners have beaten ranked opponents like Texas Tech and Notre Dame, but lost their rivalry game against Texas. This News and Notes matchup will surely have an impact on the Big 12 championship run, and it’s the ground page 10 game that will determine the winner. If Baylor can get running back Lache Seastrunk, who averages 9.1 yards per carry, running hill, it’s unlikely Oklahoma can keep up. But if the Sooners read option run game with 6’6”, 252 pound quarterback Blake Bell, Oklahoma will be able to keep the ball away from Baylor and its high scoring offense.

1 Weekly Polls

The BCS computer rankings have started their yearly differentiation from the human polls. Oregon was jumped by Florida State in this week’s BCS Poll, despite the Ducks being No. 2 in both the Coaches and Harris Polls. Undefeated Baylor comes into its week 11 matchup with Oklahoma at No. 5 in the human polls, but one-loss Stanford has jumped the Bears in the BCS Poll. Meanwhile, BCS busters Northern Il- linois and Fresno State are appreciating the computer rankings, which find them both higher in the BCS polls than either of the human polls. Michigan was the only team to fall from the rankings this week, while Texas Tech and Miami fell dramatically following their week 10 losses. The BCS picture will clear up this week, with No. 3 Oregon playing No. 5 Stanford in Palo Alto and No. 6 Baylor hosting No. 10 Oklahoma.

6 Football 101 Cleaning Helmets

My name is Doug Ingels, and I’m the BCS intern in the media department for the Rose Bowl Game. I spent the past five years working for the Wisconsin Badger football team while I attended college. During that time, I was at nearly every practice and on the sideline for 63 games, wearing a headset, working with the coaches and learning the ins and outs of college football. I noticed there are many things overlooked by people who haven’t had the same opportunities I’ve had, but I’m here to change that. Allow me to share with you some behind the scenes intel about the game we all love so much.

Every week throughout the season, equipment and student managers gather on Thurs- day nights after practice and bond over an under-appreciated duty, helmet cleaning and re-stickering.

During my first three years as a student manager, each player had just one helmet. So during a week of practices, these helmets accumulated scuffs and scratches, decals were torn, facemasks we bent and dented. So Thursday nights were the night we gathered in the back of the equipment room with buckets of sudsy water, rags, bleach and polish.

Each helmet needed to have the scuffs or face mask marks scrubbed off, often times using bleach. Some scuffs were deep enough that they required repainting of the helmet.

Any decals, including the large side logos, stripes or conference logos on the helmets that were ripped or scuffed have to be replaced. Pro prep polish is applied to the helmets to make it easier to replace the stickers in the event they need to be changed.

Fortunately, for my final two seasons with Wisconsin, we started using practice and game helmets. This minimized the number of scuffs and scrapes on the helmets and number of helmets that needed re-stickering. Rose Bowl Game Fun Fact Shaping the Way we Watch College Football

The Rose Bowl Game has shaped the way people hear and see college football world.

As the first postseason bowl game, the Rose Bowl Game was the first nationally broadcast sporting event on radio in 1927.

Then, in 1950, the Rose Bowl Game became the first bowl game to reach 100,000 fans in attendance. In 1952, NBC made it was the first national tele- vised bowl game and in 1966, it was the first bowl game broadcast in color.

The first bowl game to be broadcast to Europe? The Rose Bowl Game in 1968.

The Far East got its first taste of postseason college football in 1978, when the Rose Bowl Game was broadcast over satellite.

No stranger to trailblazing, the Rose Bowl Game has been the first for so many of the things we have come to expect from college football, and in 2014, it is the first to reach 100 bowl games. 7 Rose Bowl Game All-Century Nominees CURRENT ROSE BOWL HALL OF FAMERS HEADLINE THE 1970’S FINALISTS FOR THE ROSE BOWL GAME ALL-CENTURY CLASS , and Charles White have been nominated as finalists for the Rose Bowl Game All-Century Class as representatives from the 1970’s. The candidates, as voted by an esteemed panel from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), are the seventh of a series of names that will be unveiled each Sunday throughout the remainder of the college football regular season.

In commemoration of the 100th Rose Bowl Game, the All-Century Class will highlight and honor great players and coaches throughout the history of The Granddaddy of Them All. Archie Griffin, the only player ever to win the twice, is also one of only two players ever to have started in four consecutive Rose Bowl Games. The three-time All-American gained a total of 412 yards on 79 carries during his Rose Bowl Game career, including 149 yards in his 1974 appearance. In his four years at Ohio State, Griffin became the NCAA career-rushing leader, with 5,589 yards – a 6.1 average – and gained 100 yards or more in 31 consecutive regu- lar-season games. To this day, he remains the Buckeyes’ career rushing leader. Griffin is synony- mous with Ohio State, where he currently serves as CEO and president of the Ohio State Alumni Association. He was elected into the OSU Hall of Fame and College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and was a 1990 inductee into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.

Stanford quarterback Jim Plunkett led Stanford to an early 10-0 lead in the 1971 Rose Bowl Game, only to see Ohio State come back 14-10 at halftime. Plunkett, however, took Stanford downfield for a third-quarter and two fourth-quarter touchdowns to win the game. He finished 20 of 30 passing for 265 yards in the air with one and 49 yards on the ground, garnering Play- er of the Game honors for his performance. Plunkett won the Heisman Trophy in 1970, and went on to be the number one overall pick in the 1971 NFL draft. He spent 15 years in the league, winning two Super Bowls, including a Super Bowl MVP award, becoming the first player to be named Rose Bowl Player of the Game and Super Bowl MVP. Stanford retired Plunkett’s old number 16 in 1991; he was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1989.

As a running back, Charles White led the Trojans to three Rose Bowl Game victories and is one of only four players to receive two Player of the Game honors (in 1979 and 1980). His senior season, White set or equaled 22 NCAA, Pac-10, USC and Rose Bowl Game records, including career records for most rushes (103) and most yards gained (460) in The Granddaddy of Them All. He capped off his 1979 Heisman Trophy winning season in the 1980 Rose Bowl Game where he rushed for 247 yards, including the game winning touchdown over The Ohio State Buckeyes. White went on to a nine-year pro career, and returned to USC from 1993 to 1997 as an assistant coach, working with the running backs. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1990.

The FWAA voting committee will select one Rose Bowl Game representative from each decade to comprise the All-Century Class. In addition, one overall player and one overall coach will be highlighted at a press conference on Selection Sunday, which will take place on December 8, 2013, in Pasadena.
