It is important that we help our customers through this difficult time, and Amazonians are working around the clock to get necessary supplies delivered directly to the doorsteps of people and organizations who need them. Our Whole Foods Market stores have remained open, providing fresh food and other vital goods for customers. AMAZON EMPLOYEES RECEIVE comprehensive health benefits starting on day one of employment. We are working on building scalable testing for coronavirus. We’ve distributed face masks and implemented temperature checks at sites around the world to help protect employees and support staff, and offer free masks to our Whole Foods Market customers. We regularly sanitize door handles, stairway handrails, lockers, elevator buttons, and touch screens, and disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer are standard across our network. We also introduced extensive social distancing measures to help protect our associates. In all, we have made over 150 significant process changes in our operations network and Whole Foods Market stores, which we audit frequently, to help teams stay healthy. DURING THIS CRISIS, we’ve added 175,000 new jobs to help meet customer demand for essential products. -

Last.fm Wants to Become the Web's MTV 10 May 2007 Online social music site Last.fm is moving into the video realm, adding music videos with a goal of providing every video ever made. The site, which provides music recommendations based on user preferences, will be leveraging its music label relationships to bring artist video content to members. Users who currently sign up at Last.fm site provide it with the names of their favorite artists and the site then generates streaming music recommendations based on those entries. A plug- in also lets the site determine which music users actually play. Listeners then vote on whether they love or hate those recommendations, so that Last.fm has a better idea of what that user might enjoy. Last.fm intends to use the same model for music video content in order to create personalized video channels. The site promises higher quality than that of YouTube, with audio encoded at 128 Kbits/s on Last.fm compared to YouTube's 64 Kbits/s. Last.fm boasts partnerships with major labels like The EMI Group and Warner Music Group in addition to approximately 20,000 independent labels like Ninja Tune, Nettwerk Music Group, Domino, Warp, Atlantic and Mute. The intent is to have every music video ever made available on the site, "from the latest hits to underground obscurities to classics from the past," according to Last.fm. In November of last year, Last.fm launched a system that provides suggestions on upcoming performances based on user location and taste in music. -

Despite the ever-increasing ease of delivering music to consumers, the recording industry has fallen victim to “the disease of free.”1 When digital music was first introduced in the late 1990s, indus- try experts and insiders postulated that it would parallel the introduction and eventual mainstream acceptance of the compact disc (CD). When CDs became publicly available in 1982,2 the music industry experienced an un- precedented boost in sales as consumers, en masse, traded in their vinyl records and cassette tapes for sleek new compact discs.3 However, the intro- duction of MP3 players and digital music files had the opposite effect and the recording industry has struggled to monetize and profit from the digital revolution.4 The birth of the file sharing website Napster5 in 1999 was the start of a sharp downhill turn for record labels and artists.6 Rather than pay * J.D. The emergence of digital music and Internet file sharing, spawned by rapid advancement in information and communication technologies (ICT), has had a huge impact on the industry. Music sales in the U.S., the largest national market in the world, were cut in half over the past decade. After a quick look back at the pre-digital music market, this thesis provides an overview of the music industry in the digital era. The thesis continues with an exploration of three motivating questions that look at social networking sites as a possible major outlet and platform for musical artists and labels. A case study of a new social networking music service is presented and, in conclusion, thoughts on a general strategy for the digital music industry are presented.
