Ethylene-Vinyl Copolymer Product Stewardship Summary February 2011

(C2H4)x·(C4H5O2)y

Chemical Name: -vinyl acetate copolymer Chemical Category (if applicable): Copolymer Synonyms: ethenyl , copolymer with ethene; Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer emulsion; Poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate); But-3-enoic acid, ethene; and EVA CAS Number: 24937-78-8 CAS Name: Acetic acid, ethenyl ester, copolymer with ethene EC (EINECS) Number: 429-840-1 Document Number: GPS0043 V1.0

 Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is used in the manufacture of numerous consumer products such as flexible films for safe packaging of food, hot melt adhesives (e.g., glue sticks for hot glue guns), and tubing (e.g., flexible hoses used in cars).

 Workplace exposures to vapors or fumes during the manufacture of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer are expected to be minimal because local exhaust ventilation is used at thermal processing emission points. Local exhaust ventilation also prevents worker exposure at secondary operations (cutting, regrinding, chopping, etc.) that follow thermal processing. Good manufacturing practices and industrial hygiene practices are implemented to prevent or reduce exposure to ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. Worksite safety programs follow recommended exposure guidelines for total dust and respirable fractions of dusts of ethylene- vinyl acetate copolymer (Particulates Not Otherwise Regulated) and for residual vinyl acetate. Please see the MSDS for additional information.

 Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is an insoluble white solid in pellet, prill or powder form.

 Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer pellets, prills or dusts in contact with skin may cause mechanical irritation. Hot or molten can burn the skin and thermal processing fumes/vapors may irritate the eyes. Thermal processing fumes/vapors or dusts may also irritate the mucous membranes of the nose and throat.

 There are no known or documented chronic (long-term) effects or reproductive/developmental effects associated with ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers.

 The cancer risk for ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer is extremely low.

This product stewardship summary is intended to give general information about the chemical or categories of chemicals addressed. It is not intended to provide an in-depth discussion of all health and safety information. Additional information on the chemical is available through the applicable Material Safety Data Sheet which should be consulted before use of the chemical. The product stewardship summary does not supplant or replace required regulatory and/or legal communication documents. Statements concerning use of our products are made without warranty that any such use is free of patent infringement and are not recommendations to infringe any patent.

 Although ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers are not readily biodegradable, they are unlikely to impact the aquatic environment because they are insoluble in water. Their physical impact on the environment is considered negligible.
