December 16th 1861 Newcastle Daily Chronicle Death of Mr Garnett At a few minutes past six o’clock on Saturday night, Mr Joseph Garnett, chemist and druggist, died at his house, No 2, Side, Newcastle. Mr Garnett was a man who has rendered himself worthy of more than passing notice. Intimately connected as he has been with Newcastle during the greater portion of a long life, he leaves behind him a name not only associated with the works of merit and of genius, but he will be long remembered as a generous benefactor to our churches and chapels. He was, too, the more deserving of respect because, by the exercise of talent, industry and frugality, he raised himself from a humble grade of life to a position of affluence. He was born in April of the year 1752, at Alnwick, and was consequently in his 90th year at the period of his demise. In early life Mr Garnett obtained an appointment in the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, under the then Astronomer Royal. During the time of his employment at this institution, he manifested signs of genius and of mechanical ingenuity, and before the term of his engagement expired he distinguished himself by designing and completing an improved semaphore, for the purpose of signalling astronomical messages. Of this Mr Garnett had some reason to be proud, for although we are not acquainted with the precise merit of his telegraph, it is certain that in an age when electricity was not yet reduced to the post of messenger, any system of signalling that was adopted for the indication of the critical notices issued from the Observatory at Greenwich must have been one of decided superiority; and that Mr Garnett held this work of genius in some estimation may be reasonably inferred from the fact that in a portrait of himself the semaphore is introduced into the background of the picture. About the year 1800, Mr Garnett, having left the Observatory, came to Newcastle and commenced business as a druggist in what we must now term a small shop in the Side. It is situated at the foot of Butcher Bank, and faces the corners of the Sandhill buildings. In this shop, which in 1800 was, no doubt, a shop of standing and importance, Mr Garnett devoted himself assiduously to his business, and in this shop in the course of years he became wealthy. That he valued this shop and the house above it very highly is evident from the fact that he has passed 61 years of his life in them. The great explosion in Gateshead most likely shook the shop and the house above it very much, but it did not shake the resolve of Mr Garnett to spend his days there. A fire broke out last year at a news agent’s place of business, the very next door to Mr Garnett’s place of business, and it consumed or damaged all the news agent’s stock in trade; but it did not injure Mr Garnett, nor turn away his live for his old house. As a man of business, or let us plainly say, as a druggist, he was a “dealer of the old school” and, added our informant, who knew Mr Garnett well, “I’m sorry to say it is the old school.” Having devoted considerable attention to the study of medicine, he was consulted by a large number of patients, and he was always known to many by the title of “Dr Garnett.” As a musical amateur Mr Garnett acquired considerable local fame. He composed many airs of a lyrical nature, and among other efforts he set to music one or more of the songs that occur in dramas written by Mr Doubleday. Later in life he turned his attention to compositions of a sacred nature, and he has occasionally produced hymn tunes and chants that occupy a very creditable position among Church music. He was a man of great probity and regularity; religious but not bigoted. Of late the business in the Side has been under the management of Mr Dobson, while Mr Garnett appears to have interested himself in promoting the welfare of religion, and in performing acts of benevolence. He was a contributor to the new Church at ; he presented a bible and service of books to St Nicholas’ Church, and he made a similar present to the Rev J H Rutherford’s Church on the opening of the new building in Bath Lane. Mr Garnett met likewise the expense of improving the organ of St Nicholas’ Church by the introduction of new stops; and his last public appearance was at the casting of a bell which he presented to the new Church in last April. Thus Mr Garnett has lived to see good resulting from his charitable gifts, and after spending an estimable life he has died at a good old age. Though the health of Mr Garnett had been visibly declining for some time previously, he was not confined to his room till Saturday se’nnight. Since then he has gradually sunk under a complication of ailments and at ten minutes past six o’clock on Saturday night he expired. Mr Garnett was never married and he has died in the possession of considerable wealth.

February 18th 1843 Newcastle Journal CAUTION TO SKAITERS A melancholy accident occurred on Wednesday evening by which a fine young man, aged twenty- four, named John Dodd, grandson to Mr Milner, Mosley-street, in this town, hardwareman, met with an untimely end. It appeared that on the night in question after leaving his occupation, he proceeded alone to the pond in the Shieldfield, for the purpose of skaiting, but while doing so, the ice gave way and he fell into the water; he, however, for some time contrived to prevent himself from sinking by holding by the ice, when two other young men, named Ralph John Penman and Francis Chapman arrived at the pond, and upon hearing his cries, they instantly attempted to rescue him from his perilous situation by tying their handkerchiefs to their skait straps and throwing one end to him. Unfortunately however after he got hold, and they were in the act of pulling him out, he slipped his grasp and immediately sunk to rise no more. Information of the accident was immediately given to Mr Inspector Handyside, who, with other officers, used the utmost exertion to recover the body, which, we are sorry to say, was not found until two hours and a half afterwards. An inquest was held on the body on Thursday at the Dead House, before Wm Stoker, Esq., coroner, when a verdict of “Accidental death” was returned.

October 10th 1867 Newcastle Journal Death of the Oldest Merchant Newcastle Yesterday morning, Charles Smith, Esq., died at his residence, Saville Row, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the patriarchal age of ninety-five years and seven months. Deceased was principal of the firm Messrs Charles Smith and Son, carrying on the business of merchants, shipowners, and shipbrokers, and was by many years the oldest merchant in the town. He continued to attend his counting-house until about year ago, when his infirmities rendered him unable to undergo the fatigues of business. Up to the last his faculties were unclouded, and he quietly slumbered away, free from pain or suffering. Mr Smith was a gentleman remarkably well-informed on almost every topic, and was what is usually termed a "well-read man." His commercial and business qualifications were of a very high order, and his knowledge and advice were always at the service of those who required them. He was an excellent French scholar, and was well acquainted with the standard literature of that country, and he continued his reading of the works of modern French authors almost to the last; not, of course, neglecting the writings of his own countrymen. He was most unassuming gentleman; courteous in his demeanour ; highly respected and esteemed for the strict integrity of his conduct in private life and his straightforward and honourable commercial dealings. He was most punctual in his attention business, and rarely missed a day at his office, except on occasions when he enjoyed his annual visit to Harrogate or some such place where a little recreation is sought from the cares and anxieties of every-day life. Mr Smith never aspired any public honours from the hands of his fellow-townsmen. For very many years he was a trustee of the Merchant Seamen's Fund and took deep interest in the relief of widows, children, and sick and disabled seamen belonging to the Tvne. A namesake, the late Mr Thomas Smith, was secretary to the fund for a long period, and laboured with him in his humane efforts, in the proper distribution of the fund. Mr Smith leaves only one son living, viz., Mr Charles Smith, who is now the head of the firm. He has done the " state some service," having some years occupied a seat in the Town Council of his native town, but from which he withdrew a short time since. The death of a townsman, at such an advanced age, calls forth many interesting reminiscences. Born within 30 years of the period when the Pretender hoisted his standard of rebellion in 1745, doubtless Mr Smith's father or mother would be able to narrate to their son, the commotion which prevailed on that occasion in the North of England. He has closed his life, having, in his last year, witnessed the raising of another standard of rebellion in the sister country of Ireland, and the daring rescue of Fenian prisoners, in open day, by a band of rebels, one of the largest cities of the kingdom. Mr Smith was about twenty years old when the French Revolution broke out, and well remembered all the horrors which followed the decapitation of Louis XVI., and his ill-fated Queen, Marie Antoinette, when the government of that country passed into the hands of Robespierre and his sanguinary colleagues. He afterwards lived during the reigns of Napoleon, Louis XVIII.; the revolution of 1830, when Charles X. was dethroned, and supplanted by Louis Philippe, the revolution of 1848, when the latter monarch was driven from his throne and became an exile in England ; and lastly saw the French throne filled by the present Emperor, elected by universal suffrage. Born during the early portion of the reign of George III., he has lived under that king, George IV, William IV., and our present most gracious sovereign Victoria. The immense strides made in the development of the mineral resources of the North of England, form an interesting subject for contemplation in connection with the death of Mr Smith. Towns and villages have sprung up in Northumberland and Durham, where formerly there was nothing but barren fields. A complete revolution has taken place, since he was born, in shipbuilding, iron being now almost generally used in place of wood, while the general trade of the district has increased to such extent as to call for dock accommodation on the Tyne, Wear, Tees, Hartlepool, Blyth, and other places, whence steamers now sail to almost every part of the globe. Steam, during Mr Smith's life, has been applied as a motive power, to almost every species of machinery, while the railway system, arising from the invention of the locomotive, has become one of the greatest of our national interests. America, India, in fact the whole world is now nearly girt by telegraph wires, through which messages can be conveyed in almost short a time as it requires to write them, thus enabling mercantile operations between distant countries and England to be transacted on either side in few hours, where previously months were necessary to receive replies by letter. Referring to more local affairs Mr Smith has seen the town more than doubled size and population ; new buildings erected on the Quayside, where "merchants most do congregate;" churches and chapels, without end, to meet the religious requirements of the inhabitants ; the old town cleared away, and palatial streets built, unsurpassed for beauty in any town in the kingdom, new bridges, railway stations, and many other improvements. Such are a few of the more prominent events which have occurred during the long life of Mr Smith. The catalogue might be considerably enlarged, but that must be left to history. There are few men who attain such age, and witness so many changes as have occurred during the lifetime of the deceased.

July 2nd 1831 Newcastle Courant On the 23rd ult at Edinburgh, whither he had gone for the benefit of his health, aged 63, Mr Edward Walker, printer and proprietor of this paper. As the conductor of a periodical journal he was impartial and sincere. Founding his judgement upon facts alone, he carefully selected them from the mass of detail that weekly came before him, and left his readers to form their own conclusions. A spirit of theory, or of speculation, was alike foreign to his character. His mind was single and his purpose plain - the benefit of his fellow townsmen and of the real interests of his country being the ruling objects of his editorial career. He conducted this paper through an eventful period of 35 years; and even his political opponents will allow that he did so, steadily, perseveringly and, to the best of his judgement, for the public good. In private life he was sincerely and deservedly respected; and his good-feeling towards many of the benevolent institutions of the town, will be best appreciated by those who had been deprived of his assistance.

March 12th 1887 Newcastle Chronicle THE MOISES Of the Moises, who played such important parts in Newcastle as teachers of our ancestors, I find it recorded that as early as 1749, one Hugh Moises, A.M., was appointed head master of the Virgin Mary Hospital Grammar School. That the Reverend Hugh was succeeded by his nephew, Edward, appears from an obituary note by Latimer, to the following effect:- 29th March 1845 - died at Newcastle, aged 83, the Rev Edward Moises, M.A., vicar of Hart, and master of the Hospital of St Mary the Virgin, Newcastle. The deceased was educated at the Grammar School, to the mastership of which he was appointed in 1787, on the resignation of his celebrated uncle, the Rev Hugh Moises, and he continued to be the chief preceptor of that academy for 41 years. He also held the office of morning lecturer of All Saints’, and afternoon lecturer of St Andrew’s, for a lengthened period. In 1806 he succeeded his uncle in the mastership of the Virgin Mary Hospital, and in 1811 Lord Eldon presented him to the vicarage of Hart. In the Oriental languages few scholars have ever surpassed Mr Moises; his “Persian Interpreter” published in 1792, and “The Arabic Bible” printed in the Newcastle Chronicle office in 1811, the supervision of which was entrusted to him, being striking proofs of his diligence and learning. Mr Moises was one of the original members of the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle and a striking portrait of him by Andrews was placed in the library of that institution by his friends in February 1844.
