THE CONDUCTOR Gunther Schuller was born in New Vork City in 1925. Mr. Schuller's works have been com- missioned by such organizations as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Donaueschingen Festival of Contempo- rary Music, and the Ford Foundation. Under commission of the Hamburg State Opera he composed a jazz-oriented opera, The Visitation, which received its world premiere in Hamburg on Oc- tober 12. The performance was a great savings success, and next June the Hamburg company will present its production of that The Visitation in New York. SOUTH SHORE PLAZA: 848-0300 [io] OVERTURE, "OTHELLO," Op. 93 By Antonin Dvorak Born in Miihlhausen, Bohemia, September 8, 1841; died in Prague, May 1, 1904 The work is scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones and tuba, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, harp and strings. During the latter part of his life, Dvorak became increasingly interested in program music. This sometimes resulted in over- tures, and finally, in the five symphonic poems which were his last contributions to symphonic literature. During the years 1891-1892, Dvorak was occupied with three overtures, which he meant to call "Nature," "Life," and "Love." He planned the composition as a connected cycle, and it was in this form that the three overtures were first performed, with Dvorak conducting at the last concert before his departure for America on April 28, 1892. Eventually the three over- tures were separated and given separate opus numbers.

    Legato in Times of Staccato Playlist 12 - Wednesday, June 24th, 2020 Curated by Music Director, Fouad Fakhouri William Dawson: Negro Folk Symphony William Dawson was a renowned African American composer, choir director, and professor who incorporated African American themes and melodies into his music. With the Negro Folk Symphony, Dawson aimed to “write a symphony in the Negro folk idiom, based on authentic folk music but in the same symphonic form used by the composers of the [European] romantic-nationalist school.” The work consists of three movements, each with its own programmatic subtitle. Dvorak: Serenade for Strings & Wind Dvořák composed his entire Serenade in E major for string orchestra in less than two weeks in May 1875. The piece is in five movements, and in the finale, the main theme from the first movement is quoted before the coda, effectively unifying the work. Overall, the piece is light and carefree, reflecting a happy and productive time in Dvořák’s life. The Serenade in D minor for wind instruments was also composed in just two weeks in January 1878. The winds play atop a foundation of cello and string bass, and like in the Serenade for Strings, the opening theme is quoted in the final movement to unify the piece. The work is Classical in form but Czech in character as Dvořák incorporated folk melodies and rhythms from his native Bohemian culture.
