We will survey forms of social organization (e.g. the caste system, the religious roles of women, monastic life), and the practices and beliefs of Hindus & Buddhists, including their origin myths, rites of passage, and their ethical values. The course is designed around major conceptual themes: discerning between illusion and reality; spiritual journeys in search of religious experience; death and the afterlife; religion, gender, and sexuality; monasticism, asceticism, and the hermit’s life; and the effects of colonialism and modernity on religions. In particular we will examine the religious and political reforms of Mahatma Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, two of the most important leaders of the last century. The non-violent ideals of Gandhi and the Dalai Lama present us with an alternative to our modern consumer-oriented technological culture, where people seek what they are programmed to seek. This course will help you become more informed and critical of how the news media represents other religions and their role in different societies, rather than be passive consumers of the media. You will learn to really “Think Different,” as the Apple advertising campaign once put it (see p.

  • Combating Russian Disinformation in Ukraine: Case Studies in a Market for Loyalties
COMBATING RUSSIAN DISINFORMATION IN UKRAINE: CASE STUDIES IN A MARKET FOR LOYALTIES Monroe E. Price* & Adam P. Barry** I. INTRODUCTION This essay takes an oblique approach to the discussion of “fake news.” The approach is oblique geographically because it is not a discourse about fake news that emerges from the more frequently invoked cases centered on the United States and Western Europe, but instead relates primarily to Ukraine. It concerns the geopolitics of propaganda and associated practices of manipulation, heightened persuasion, deception, and the use of available techniques. This essay is also oblique in its approach because it deviates from the largely definitional approach – what is and what is not fake news – to the structural approach. Here, we take a leaf from the work of the (not-so) “new institutionalists,” particularly those who have studied what might be called the sociology of decision-making concerning regulations.1 This essay hypothesizes that studying modes of organizing social policy discourse ultimately can reveal or predict a great deal about the resulting policy outcomes, certainly supplementing a legal or similar analysis. Developing this form of analysis may be particularly important as societies seek to come to grips with the phenomena lumped together under the broad rubric of fake news. The process by which stakeholders assemble to determine a collective position will likely have major consequences for the * Monroe E. Region in focus: Bucharest-Ilfov Bucharest-Ilfov Region, formed by Bucharest, Romania’s capital and Ilfov County – is located in the central part of the Romanian Plain in southern Ro- mania. Bucharest is the largest urban agglomeration of the country; its num- bers approaching 2 million inhabitants represents more than 85% from the total region’s population. Romanian legend says that the city of Bucharest was founded on the banks of the Dambovita River by a shepherd named Bucur, whose name literally means ”joy”. His flute playing reportedly dazzled the people and his hearty wine from nearby vineyards endeared him to the local traders, who gave his name to the place. Known for its wide, tree-lined boulevards, glorious Belle Époque buildings and a re- putation for the highlife (which in the 1900s earned its nickname of ”Little Paris”), Bucharest is today a bustling metropolis. For this reason film productions began shoo- ting in Bucharest and it did not take long for international producers and filming com- panies to discover and appreciate the rich historical heritage of the city. In fact, more than 200 productions have been filmed, entirely or partially in Bucha- rest and its surrounding areas, most of them in the last ten years. CENTRAL EUROPEAN REVIEW OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT ISSN 2543-9472; eISSN 2544-0365 www.cerem-review.eu Vol. 4, No. 1, 149-162, March 2020 www.ojs.wsb.wroclaw.pl COVID-19 – reflections on the surprise of both an expected and unexpected event1 Johannes (Joost) PLATJE WSB University in Wrocław, Wrocław, Poland Jeffrey A. HARVEY Netherlands Institute of Ecology, Wageningen, The Netherlands, and Vrije University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Lez Rayman-BACCHUS University of Winchester Business School, Winchester, UK Abstract: Aim: This paper reflects on the COVID-19 epidemic from the perspective of small probabilities and the difficulty of predicting similar events. Against the background of basic economic principles, the importance of the precautionary principle for crisis management is discussed, as well as potential consequences of this epidemic. Findings: The authors argue that whilst the epidemic as such was unexpected, in future countries should be prepared for such stochastic events to happen. This requires a precautionary approach. When society is not prepared for such a calamity, or waits too long to implement measures to deal with it, the social and economic costs may be very high – much higher than ‘hedging bets’ and losing. The article reflects on different issues which are meant for further discussion on unpredictable future threats. One important issue is the uncertainty created by this event. This increases the likeliness that something unexpected can appear in the near future, creating the need for research and discussion on public and government responses to these events. Being aware of such challenges increases the likeliness of 1 This paper is non-refereed, as it reflects on the actual situation.

  • Mature Masculinity and the Ageing Action Hero
Meijer Rebecca Feasey Mature masculinity and the ageing action hero The ageing male action hero is a figure many are familiar with through the character of Bruce Willis in the Die Hard series. However, physical strength, speeds and agility are usually not associated with old age. Whether age makes a difference in the action hero genre is a question Rebecca Feasey deals with in this article. Introduction Much work within the field of film and gender studies has attempted to theorise, unmask and deconstruct the representation of the male action hero, paying particular attention to the spectacular body and the herculean physical performances of characters such as John McClane/Bruce Willis, Martin Riggs/Mel Gibson and Indiana Jones/Harrison Ford. And yet, at a time when these stars are returning to the action roles that made them famous, in some cases, several decades later, scholars continue to ignore and overlook the fundamental notion of age in their discussions of the hard bodied, hegemonic hero. After all, hegemonic masculinity has associations with physical prowess, sexual virility, social dominance and aggression, which are potentially at odds with the image of the ageing male. With this in mind, I propose to examine the representation of the ageing action hero in the popular and long running Die Hard (1988, 1990, 1995, 2007) franchise, and consider the ways in which the mature masculinity on offer is seen to either be confirming to or challenging the hegemonic ideal. Hegemonic masculinity and male hierarchies Although there are a myriad of masculinities in existence at any one moment, this is not to say that each one is treated equally or granted the same level of social, sexual or economic power.

‘A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO DIE: A MARTHA’S VINEYARD MYSTERY’ Cast Bios JESSE METCALFE (Jeff) – Hollywood leading man Jesse Metcalfe currently stars as Trace Riley in Hallmark Channel’s “Chesapeake Shores.” Before that, Metcalfe was seen as Christopher Ewing in the popular TNT series, “Dallas.” Born in California and raised in Waterford, Connecticut, Metcalfe played in several basketball leagues in his youth. Studying Film and Television at New York University’s famed Tisch School of the Arts, his first role on television was starring in the NBC series “Passions” as Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald. After a successful five-year stint on the show, Metcalfe took a brief break from it to pursue other opportunities. He returned to make his final appearance in January 2005. Metcalfe went on to star as the teen gardener John Rowland on ABC’s hugely popular “Desperate Housewives.” His storyline of an illicit affair with Eva Longoria’s character, a married housewife, garnered fan and media attention. During this time, Metcalfe also played the title character in the 20th Century Fox black comedy film John Tucker Must Die.
