The Apostles' Creed the Our Father the Hail Mary the Glory Be The Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, The Hail Mary the communion of saints, Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you; the forgiveness of sins, blessed are you among women, the resurrection of the body, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. and life everlasting.     The Holy See POPE JOHN PAUL II GENERAL AUDIENCE Wednesday, 5 November 1997 We can count on Mary’s intercession 1. Down the centuries Marian devotion has enjoyed an interrupted development. In addition to the traditional liturgical feasts dedicated to the Lord’s Mother, there has been a flowering of countless expressions of piety, often approved and encouraged by the Church’s Magisterium. Many Marian devotions and prayers are an extension of the liturgy itself and have sometimes contributed to its overall enrichment, as is the case with the Office in honour of the Blessed Virgin and other pious compositions which have become part of the Breviary. The first known Marian invocation goes back to the third century and begins with the words: "We fly to thy patronage (Sub tuum praesidium), O holy Mother of God...". However, since the 14th century the most common prayer among Christians has been the "Hail Mary". By repeating the first words the angel addressed to Mary, it leads the faithful to contemplate the mystery of the Incarnation. The Latin word "Ave" translates the Greek word "Chaire": it is an invitation to joy and could be translated "Rejoice". The Eastern hymn "Akathistos" repeatedly stresses this "rejoice". In the "Hail Mary" the Blessed Virgin is called "full of grace" and is thus recognized for the perfection and beauty of her soul. The phrase "The Lord is with thee" reveals God’s special personal relationship with Mary, which fits into the great plan for his covenant with all humanity. Next, the statement "Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus" expresses the fulfilment of the divine plan in the Daughter of Zion’s virginal body.

We know very little about the Virgin Mary, though the little we know is tantalizing. She played, of course, a crucial role in the story of Jesus and has had an enormous influence in the history of Christianity. The major creeds profess that Jesus was "conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary." Mary's impact on Christian piety has been powerful. She is the first among the saints to whom we unite our voices in prayers of praise and petition. Is there any prayer that has been said more frequently than the Hail Mary? On the affective side, Mary has come to symbolize maternal listening for countless people, becoming for them, as a modern writer puts it, "an icon of the tenderness of God."1 On the level of moral response, Christians, reflecting on the New Testament, regard Mary as the ideal disciple, the first among the saints.

Zelenka’s Ave regina coelorum Settings (ZWV 128) of 1737: A Case Study in the Transmission of Viennese Liturgico-musical Practices to Dresden Frederic Kiernan In recent decades, the music of Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) has been the object of increasing interest to scholars and performers of eighteenth-century music. Zelenka was one of a contingent of Bohemian musicians working at the Dresden court during the first half of the eighteenth century, when connections between the Province of Bohemia and the Saxon city were strong. The repertoire of sacred music accumulated and performed for Dresden’s Catholic court church during Zelenka’s career represents one of the crowning artistic achievements of that court. However, a detailed study of the complete set of Zelenka’s Ave regina coelorum settings (ZWV 128) has not yet been undertaken.1 These works were composed toward the end of Zelenka’s life, when the influence of Viennese court culture in Dresden was prominent. Throughout the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, sacred music at the Viennese court was organised into categories to ensure that liturgical occasions were celebrated with music of commensurate pomp and splendour, or conversely, of an appropriately modest nature. This process was documented by Kilian Reinhardt (c. 1653–1729), the musical administrator and later Konzertmeister there, in his 1727 Rubriche generali.2 Using this document as a basis for further study, Friedrich W. 1 Thomas Kohlhase’s edition of Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Ave Regina coelorum g-Moll (Stuttgart: Carus-Verlag, 1983) provides a brief description of each setting.
