PREFACE

The higher education institutions have a key role to play in the all round development of their most important stakeholder, the students, leading them to nation building. Through scientific application of educational psychology, effective class room management, proper evaluation techniques, inculcation of research aptitude and overall by a systematic educational administration this goal can be achieved to a great extent.

Since its inception in 1981, M.E.S. Keveeyam College Valanchery, satisfactorily perform its duty of providing quality education to the socially and educational backward people of and nearby districts of State. IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) of this college is playing a key role in ensuring the standards of education provided in this institution. All the members of various faculties, non teaching staff, management representatives, PTA members and all those associated with college are actively involved for the overall development of the institution.

In 2015-16 significant achievements were recorded for the college. DST-FIST funded research laboratory started its functioning. The college collaborated with Aligarh Muslim University for Academic Leadership Training Programmes. The internal quality assurance cell played a lead role in the secularism campaign organised by Muslim Educational Society. We have great pleasure to present the report of activities of 2015-16 in which there are creative involvements of the internal quality assurance cell in one form or another.

Significant Activities and contributions made by IQAC

IQAC contributed the overall developmental and academic activities of the institution. IQAC encouraged the teachers to undertake minor and major research projects. The internal examination system was strengthened. Many student centred activities were organised under the guidance of IQAC. Quality improvement programmes for faculties were organised. New programmes were introduced as per the recommendations of IQAC. Effective feedback mechanism helped teachers understand their strengths and weakness.

Report

New Courses and Programmes Ph D Programme in Chemistry The first PhD programme in our college started this year. Under the guideship of Dr.C.Rajesh four research scholors have enrolled to PhD programme in Chemistry. The following programmes were started in 2015-16 1. B Sc Psychology (Self Financing) 2. M Sc Computer Science (Self Financing) 3. M Sc Zoology (Self Financing)

Admission Admissions to UG and PG programmes were conducted by Centralised allotment process as per the guidelines of the government and University of Calicut. The total student strength of the institution last year was 922 out of which 679 are girls.

DST-FIST Funded Research Laboratory Research Laboratory of Chemistry has been set up using the instruments procured using a grant of Rs. 80 lakhs under DST-FIST scheme (Fund for Improvement of Science &Technology infrastructure in universities & higher educational institutions of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. Of ). The Research Laboratory was built using the UGC general development assistance for construction of building (Rs.30 lakhs).

National Seminars organised

Department of Zoology organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘Climate change and dwindling resources of western ghats’ on 15-16th of December 2015. Dr. P.R.Arun (Principal Scientist & HOD, EIA Division, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History, Coimbatore), Dr. A. Bijukumar (Associate Professor and Head University of Kerala) Dr.C.P.Shaji (Conservation Biologist) were the keynote speakers of the seminar.

Department of Chemistry organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar on New Vistas in Chemistry on 1-2nd December. Dr. Edamana Prasad (IIT Chennai)inaugurated the seminar. Dr. S. Muthu subrahmaniam (Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamilnadu), Dr. Kana M Sureshan (IISER, ), Dr. Ananthakumar Solaiappan (NIIST Thiruvananthapuram) and Dr.Parameswaran Pattiyil (NIT, Calicut) were the keynote speakers.

Department of Commerce organised a UGC sponsored National Seminar on Financial inclusion in the rural areas of India on 20-21st January. Mr.Thamby Paul ( Regional manager, SBT, Malappuram ) inaugurated the seminar.

Awards and recognitions  Dr. Jisha V S has been awarded the prestigious Dr. C. V Raman Fellowiship for Post Doctoral studies in USA. International Journal (Chem Y) Department of Chemistry published the second issue of the journal ChemY: Journal for Young Researchers in Chemistry in September 2015. (ISSN 2394-1324)

Rajastani Cultural Events Aksharam Literary club organised Rajastani cultural events in association with SPIC MACAY (Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture amoungst Youth). Various cultural events like Kalbania, Bavayi dance and Sufi Music was staged in the College auditorium. Campaign for Secularism Muslim Educational Society has conducted a month-long awareness campaign for secularism in all institutions emphasizing the need of communal harmony.

As part of this, various programmes have been organized at MES Keveeyam College Valanchery in line with the directives from MES central committee. (a) Secular student Chain: About 1000 students of our institution formed a human chain by joining hand to hand. (b) Philatelic exhibition was organized at Mahatma college hall, near bus stand, Valanchery. An incredible collection of postage stamps of our national leaders and famous personalities who contributed to the protection of secularism was exhibited. (c) Secular Rally: A rally was organized in connection with the secularism campaign. The rally began at the college campus and marched to Valanchery town. The rally was flagged off by Smt. Shahina Teacher (Chair Person, Valanchery Municipality).

(d) Pillars of Secularism Award

MES central committee has decided to honour those who have contributed for the upliftment of secular values by giving the ‘Pillars of Secularism Award”. Based on the recommendations of the Valanchery unit of MES, the central committee has

selected Dr. M Govindan, Sri. Manavendranath and Sri. KT Ramakrsihnan for the award. The award distribution and honouring the awardees was held in a public meeting at Valanchery town. Famous poet Sri. P K Gopi inaugurated the function and distributed the awards.

Short term course on Academic Leadership by CALEM (Aligarh Muslim University)

The Centre of Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM) of UGC-HRDC of Aligarh Muslim University under the scheme of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers And Teaching organized a short term course in Academic Leadership. Faculties from AMU and other prestigious institutions engaged various sessions in the short term course for one week.

Workshop for College Teachers

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) conducted a Two Day Faculty Development workshop on “Pedagogical Approaches and Digital Technologies for Effective Teaching- Learning”. The programme offered expert knowledge in effective class room management and pedagogical insights into efficiently transacting the syllabus with special focus on digital technologies in education relevant to a hyper connected world.

Erudite Lecture

The Internal Quality Assurance Cell in association with Kerala State Higher Education Council has organized an erudite lecture on Crash of Oil Price and Future of West Asian Politics by Dr. Prof (Dr.) A K Ramakrishnan (Head, Centre for West Asian Studies, JNU, New Delhi).

Tarang (Women Empowerment Programme)

Sakthi (Women Development Cell) of the college organized a one day work shop ‘Tarang’ on women empowerment. Mrs Afsana Perween,IAS Asst Collector, Malappuram inaugurated the programme.

Faculty workshop on Communication Skill

One day workshop on communicative skills for teachers was conducted by Mr. Gomathi Nathan. The programme was organized under the Collaborative Professional Development Programme (CPDP)

Interdepartmental Debate Competition

Department of English organized Prof. A K Hydrose Memorial inter collegiate debate competition.

Chembuds

Department of Chemistry organized a one day workshop for plus two students on innovative thoughts and practices in Chemistry.

Alumni Meet College Alumni meeting was conducted on the second Saturday of December. Mrs. Shahina Teacher (Municipal Chair Person) inaugurated the meet.

Teacher Alumni Meet In connection with the retirement of faculty members teacher alumni meet was organised.

Sports Achievements College has got tremendous achievements in sports last year. We have been awarded as the best performer in sports among all MES colleges for the second consecutive year. Our football team has reached the quarter finals of All Kerala Football Tournament (Goal 2016) organised by New Indian Express. Mr. Mohammed Jamsheer selected as the promising player of that tournament and he received a Motor Bike for his performance. College won the Runner up position in Shajahan Memorial Intercollegiate Football Tournament organized by Safa College. Mr Jishnu V V won two gold Medal and Mr. Satheesh won two Bronze Medal in inter collegiate Kalarippayattu championship. Mr. Shabeeb has won silver medal in inter collegiate weight lifting championship. Our college has won the District Power Lifting Championship.

‘Pustakam Oru Suhruthu-Vayana Namukku Vazhikatti’(Book: A Friend, Reading: A Guide)

The Youth Wing of Muslim Educational Society has handed over books worth Rs. 250000 to our college library as a part of their campaign Book: A Friend, Reading: A Guide. Dr.P A Fazal Gafoor(State President, MES) has handed over the books to Principal Dr. P Mohamedali.

Road Safety awareness programme

Road safety club conducted a one day awareness programme on road safety. Mr. M P Subhash Babu (RTO ) inaugurated the programme. Mr. P Raju IPS, Former DSP, Malappuram was the chief guest.

Nirbhaya

A programme was organized by Janamaithri Police of Valanchery on self protection of women. Training on martial arts for self defense was given.
