DeMichiel was an outstanding for RIT, Apr. 11 NCAA Finals TBA leading that team to the Frozen Four as a senior. *-ECAC Games SAINT SUPPORT STAFF: Aisha Visram, a 2007 graduate of the University of Guelph, #-Best of three series is in her second season as athletic trainer for the Saint men’s hockey team. Mike Elberty, a 1979 St. Lawrence graduate is the strength and conditioning coach and Brenden McHugh is the video coordinator for the 2012-13 Saints. Wally Johnson is the sports information contact and is in his 39th year of working with the Saint program. He also works with the Saint radio broadcasts during games. THE BREAKDOWN: The 2014-15 Saint roster includes four seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores and nine freshmen. The Saints lost four of their top five scorers from last season and workhorse goaltender Matt Weninger, who played in 132 games during his four seasons including 34 of 38 last year. Of the 18 returnees, seven played in all 38 games last year, and an eighth in 37. The Saints also return junior Tommy Thompson who sat out last season and will have two years of eligibility.

THE SAINT CAPTAINS: Senior wing Gunnar Hughes will be the Saint captain this season while classmate Patrick Doherty and junior forward Brian Ward will be the assistant captains. Hughes, an assistant captain last year, follows in the footsteps of his brother George as a two-year captain for the Saints and joins Sean and Kyle Flanagan and Mike and Pete Lappin as the only brothers in SLU hockey history to both captain teams. Hughes scored five goals and had 13 assists last season and has played in 109 career games with 16 goals and 35 assists for 51 points. He has five career game winning goals for the Saints. Doherty, an excellent special teams player, has five power play goals, four shorthanded goals and five game winners among 24 career goals in 111 games. He also has 17 assists for 41 points. Ward had eight goals and nine assists for 17 points in 38 games in his first season of collegiate competition.

THE RIT SERIES: The Saints and Tigers will meet for the fourth straight season and for the second time in a row in Rochester when the two teams open their NCAA seasons at the new Polisseni Center on Friday. The two teams split last season, the Saints winning game one 5-3 before RIT took game two 6-4 and the Saints lead the overall series 9-4-0. SLU is 3-3-0 in games played in Rochester, four of them on campus (2-2-0) and two at Blue Cross Arena.

THE NIAGARA SERIES: The Saints and Purple Eagles meet for the first time since playing three times in the 2009-10 season with the Saints winning two of the three games. Overall the teams have met eight times since 1998-99 and the Saints hold a slim 4-3-1 series lead. SLU is 3-1-1 in the last five and also 3-1-1 in games played at Niagara.

BROTHER ACTS: The Saints will not have a pair of brothers on the roster for the first time in ten years with the graduation of and the departmure of for the NHL after last season. The Saints had gone nine straight seasons with a pair of brothers on the roster. Brothers George and Gunnar Hughes played together for the Saints in 2012-13 and 2011-12, Sean and Kyle Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley were teammates in 2010-11, Derek and Jared Keller played together from 2007-08 to 2009-10, and Mark and Paul Wallmann played for the Saints from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Other brother acts who have played together for the Saints have included the Lappins...Pete and Tim from 1984-85 to 1988-89 and Mike and Chris in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the Harneys, Jake and Justin from 1996-00, the Muir twins, Mike and Sean from 1998-02, plus Eric and Martin Lacroix in the 1990s, Bill and Mike Gerrie and Dean and Dick Popiel in the 1980s. In six of the brother pairings since 1987, one has been an All Ameri- ca...Greg Carey was a repeat All America and a “Hobey Hat Trick” finalist last season. Pete Lappin was a two-time All America, Mike Lappin earned All America as a senior as did Justin Harney, Sean Flanagan and George Hughes. Pete and Tim Lappin are third on the all-time scoring list for brothers who have played together with 315 points (Pete 187, Tim 128).

NHL CONNECTIONS: Former Saint Rich Peverley (), Brandon Bollig () and Mike McKenna (Columbus Bluejackets) were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a number of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues. Peverly hopes to return to action after being sidelined by an irregular heartbeat. Bollig was traded to Calgary and McKenna spent most of his season in the AHL, playing in four games for Columbus in . A host of former players hold significant positions in the NHL. Former goaltender Jacques Martin was the head coach of the Canadiens and and most recently an assistant at Pittsburgh. Ex-defenseman Randy Sexton, former GM at Ottawa and Florida, is now with Pittsburgh in player development.. Bill Torrey, who has a long history of management success in the NHL, was in charge of the search for Martin’s replacement as GM in Florida, is the Panthers’ Alternate Governor and is a member of the NHL Hall of Fame. Former Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero is a former Saint captain. Murray Cawker is Director of Hockey Operations for the , Paul Castron is Director of Amateur Scouting for the , Eric LaCroix is Director of Hockey Operations for the , Mike Barnett is Director of US Scouting for the and is a former Pheonix Coyotes GM, Mark Leach is a scout for the , and Mark Bonneau is a vice president with the Ottawa Senators. Teddy Dent is the coach of the Chicago’s top minor league club in Rockford. Former Saint player , who had a 10-year NHL career, is the color commentator and SLU graduate Dan Rousanowsky is the play-by-play announcer for the . Mike Madill retired as a player last year and was named coach of the Las Vegas team in the ECHL. became the first coach to win the Stanley Cup and the Kontinental Hockey League championship when he won the Gagarin Cup with the Metallurg Magnitorgosk team in Russia last season. Peverley became the first Saint to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup as a playing member of the championship team when the Bru- ins won the cup in June. Bollig joined him (along with Dent) in 2012-13 when the Blackhawks won the cup. PLAYER PROFILES 1 • Kyle Hayton • Fr. • Goaltender • 6-0 • 160 • Denver, CO • Sioux City (USHL): A member of two National U-18 championship teams and the NARCH Roller Hockey National Championship team, Kyle was a USHL All-Star team member in 2013. He had a 2.29 goals againsts average and a .932 save percentage for Sioux City. He attended Shattuck St. Mary’s and played soccer and lacrosse, earning high academic honors. He is the son of Lewis and Kristen Hayton.

2 • Eric Sweetman • So. • Defenseman • 5-11 • 175 • Woodbine, MD • Youngstown (USHL): Eric scored seven goals and had 11 assists for 18 points from the blue line in 63 games for the Youngstown Phantoms. He was plus-three for the season and had five special teams goals, three on the power play and two shorthanded. In two seasons at Youngstown he scored 11 goals and had 19 assists in 123 games. He attended Ursuline High School and played lacrosse, helping his team to a state championship. He is the son of Mike and Linda Sweetman. 2013-14: Made his collegiate debut in game one against Maine and assisted on Patrick Doherty’s game winning goal for his first collegiate point. Scored his first collegiate goal on the power play in game two at Ferris State. He had his first career multi-point game with assists on two of the three goals at Harvard and added an assist at Dartmouth. He finished his rookies season with three goals and 12 assists for 15 points and played in all 38 games. His first career playoff goal was the game winner in overtime in game one of the Brown series and he assisted on two other game-deciding goals. The son of Beny and Janet Masella, he attended Deerfield Academy and played hockey for the team which won the Deerfield Academy Cup. 2013-14: Made his collegiate debut in game one against Maine and had an assist. 4 • Mike Graham • So. • Defenseman • 5-11 • 185 • , ON • Kent School (US Prep): A defenseman who was MVP of the Kent team as a senior, Mike Graham was first team All New England for a team which finished as runner-up in the New England prep league. He scored five goals and had 14 assists. The son of Mike and Cathy Graham, he also played golf at Kent. 2013-14: Mike made his first collegiate appearance in game two of the Maine series. He scored his first collegiate goal against Union and it was the game winner as the Saints were the last team to beat the Dutchmen prior to their run to the national title. 7 • Gavin Bayreuther • So. • Defenseman • 6-1 • 195 • Canaan, NH • Fargo (USHL): A defenseman who was named to the USHL All Rookie team while playing for the Fargo Force, Gavin Bayreuther scored nine goals and had 24 assists while helping his team to the Western Conference championship. He earned All New England first team honors in both hockey and lacrosse while playing for the Holderness School in 2012 and also played soccer for Holderness. He is the son of John and Jessica Bayreuther. 2013-14: The ECAC Co-Rookie of the Year and a second-team All ECAC defenseman, Gavin was one of the outstanding young defensemen in the nation last year. He was third in the country in scoring by defensemen with nine goals and 27 assists, and the top-scoring rookie defense- man and fifth overall among all rookies. He had six power play goals among his nine for the season and assisted on three game win- ning goals. 2014-15: Selected as a pre-season ECAC All Star and is the only sophomore among that group...one of two sophomores selected as one of college hockey’s impact defensemen for 2014-15. He was a member of the state championship team at Detroit Catholic Central and a first- team All State selection in 2012 and a second team choice in 2011. He also played baseball. He is the son of Paul and Jill Gluchowski.

9 • Alex Hagen • Jr. • Forward • 5-11 • 185 • Bronxvville, NY • Surrey (BCHL): The first second generation Saint player since Andre Dalbec, who played in the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons, Alex is the son of former Saint forward Kevin Hagen ‘82 and his wife Caroline. Kevin was a three-year regular for the Saints. Alex scored 43 points in 57 games for the Surrey Eagles in the British Colum- bia Hockey League prior to joining the Saints The MVP at Choate-Rosemary Hall in 2009, he had 20 goals and 23 assists for Surrey. 2012-13: Made his collegiate debut at Western Michigan...he scored his first collegiate point with an assist at Northeastern...he was injured in the Colgate game returned to action against Vermont. He played in 34 of 38 as a rookie. 2013-14: Alex was named the Saints’ Most Improved Player for 2013-14 after scoring four goals and assisting on five in 32 games as a sophomore. He scored his first collegiate goal in game two of the Northeastern series and had his first multi-point game with a goal and an assist. Prior to playing for Green Bay, he was a member of the BCHL Island Division Champion Alberni Valley Bulldogs and earned that team’s Bob Fenton Trophy for sportsmanship. He also played rugby and baseball and Athol Murray College of Notre Dame and earned the Chancellor Frederick W. Hill Scholarship and was a Dean’s honor roll member for grades 9-12. 11 • Ross McMullen • Jr. • Defenseman • 6-4 • 205 • Las Vegas, NV • Camrose (AJHL) An outstanding defenseman for the Camrose Kodiaks in junior hockey, Ross scored three goals and had seven assists in 20 games. He was a high honors graduate at Advanced Technology Academy and played for the Boston Junior Bruins on an Empire JHL championship team prior to his season with Camrose. The son of Brian and Lynn McMullan, he intends to major in economics and Spanish. He is the first player in program history from Las Vegas. 2012-13: Made his collegiate debut in game two of the Western Michigan series and played in 14 games as a rookie. 2013-14: Made his first appearance of the season in game two at RIT and scored his first collegiate goal. A graduate of Taft and the hockey team MVP in 2011, he also played lacrosse in prep school. The son of Kevin and Elaine McGovern he intends to major in economics. His father played collegiate hockey against the Saints at Concordia in Montreal. 2012-13: The Saint team Rookie of the Year, Sean played in all 38 games, recording eight assists in 2012-13. He scored his first career point in a 5-2 win at Northeastern and assisted on a pair of game-winning goals including the winner in the RIT game which was the 1000th win in program history. 13 • Woody Hudson • So • Forward • 6-3 • 220 • Greece, NY • Chicago (USHL) Woody Hudson split his final junior season between the Indiana Ice and the Chicago Steel, finishing the year with 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points in a combined 65 games. He had 14 goals and six assists and was captain of the Indiana Ice. The son of Woodruff and Wanda Hudson, he attended Milton Academy and was part of the 2011 New England Championship team. He also played football and lacrosse at Milton. 2013-14: Made his collegiate debut against Maine in game one and scored his first collegiate point with the primary assist on Brian Ward’s goal. Scored his first collegiate goal in game two at Ferris State. He had his first multi-point game with two assists in game two of the Northeastern series. Scored his first ECAC goal in the first period at Yale. Scored the game winner in game two of the playoff series against Brown. Had six goals and five assists ins 37 games as a rookie. 14 • Alex Dahl • So. • Forward • 6-0 • 180 • Eau Claire, WI • Youngstown (USHL) The team captain for the Youngstown Phantoms Alex Dahl scored 11 goals and had 13 assists in 64 games in his second season in the USHL. A teammate of defenseman Eric Sweet- man, they helped the team set a franchise record for wins with 37 in 2013. The son of Kirk and CIndy Dahl, he was a Kurt Hammer Award nominee and also played baseball and football in high school. 2013-14: The winner of the Kevin Dougherty Scholarship for the class of 2017, Alex had a strong rookie season for the Saints. Recorded his first collegiate point with an assist in the Colgate game. Scored his first collegiate goal in game one of the RIT series. He had two goals and two assists in 54 games for Green Bay and had prior junior hockey stints for Wichita Falls in the NAHL and Fort McMurray in the AJHL. He played football and ran track at Merrill High School and is the son of David and Kelly Purmal.

17 • Drew Smolcynski • So. • Forward • 5-8 • 173 • Hatfield, PA• Chicago (USHL)A teammate of Woody Hudson on both the Chica- go Steel and Indiana Ice, Drew Smolcynski combined for 20 goals and 25 assists between the two teams in his final year in the USHL. An asssitant captain for the Ice, he scored 15 goals and had 28 points in 44 games in Indianapolis. He had seven power play goals, three shorthanders and two game winners in 65 games. Drew played soccer and golf and earned rookie of the year honors in hockey at the Gunnery. The son of Andrew and Patricia Smolcynski, he was an honor roll student throughout high school. 2013-14: Had a spectacular collegiate debut, scoring two goals including the game-winner in a 3-2 comeback at Ferris State. Earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors. He scored his third of the year and had his first collegiate assist in game one of the Northeastern series. A graduate of Hanover(NH) High School, he captained both his high school team and the Monarchs. He also played lacrosse in high school, helping his team to a state title. 2011-12: Patrick had a solid rookie season for the Saints, playing in 35 of 36 games and finishing his first collegiate season with six goals and five assists for 11 points. He had three power play goals and scored the game winning goals against RPI and Clarkson in the Lake Placid game. He also had an assist on the game-winner at Princeton.He earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors Oct. 18 after scoring two goals against RIT. 2012-13: Pat scored nine goals, two of them shorthanded and one on the power play in his rookie campaign. He was among five players in the ECAC to score two shorthanded goals in the season. He finished the year with a career high 13 points and had five goals and three assists in league play. He had 13 blocked shots for the Saints in his sophomore year. He had a four-game scoring streak in early Jan- uary and assisted on three game winning goals. His first goal of the year came shorthanded in a 5-0 win at Maine. 2013-14: Scored the game winner in game one against Maine for his first goal of the season. Had a big night at Dartmouth in which he scored two and set up two others including Gunnar Hughes’ eventual game winner. One of the two was shorthanded. His four-point night was the best of his career.He had two shorthanders and three game winners in his junior year. Finished the season with nine goals and eight assists for 17 points in 38 games. 20 • Joe Sullivan • Fr • Forward • 5-10 • 190 • Las Vegas, NV/Indiana (USHL): Joe had six goals and 16 assists in 58 games for the Indiana Ice last season and was a member of the Clark Cup championship team, the Silver Stick Regional Champion team and was a member of the NAHL West Division Champions in the NAHL splitting the 2012-13 season between Aberdeen and Wenachee. He attended Central High School and was a National Honor Society member. He is the son of Michael and Marie Sullivan.

21 • Tommy Thompson • Jr. • Forward • 6-1 • 185 • Londonderry, NH/New Hampshire (EJHL): Another product of the EJHL Cham- pion New Hampshire Monarchs, Tommy Thompson had 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points in 43 games. He scored three power play goals, two shorthanded and three game winners as the Monarchs went 38-4-2 to win the Northern Division and went on to win the playoff championship. He was Rookie of the Year in the AJHL in 2010. Tommy also played lacrosse for Londonderry High School and plans to major in economics at St. Lawrence. 2011-12: Tommy Thompson scored his first collegiate goal to open the scoring in the Michigan game. He scored the fifth Saint goal at Brown for his second of the year. He scored his third goal of the season and first post-season goal in game one of the Dartmouth series. 2012-13: Scored his first goal of the season in game two of the Ala- bama-Huntsville series. He finished his sophomore season with five goals and five assists in 31 games.2013-14: Tommy sat out the 2013-14 season and will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. 22 • Christian Horn • So • Forward • 5-11 • 177 • Plymouth, MN/Sioux Falls (USHL) : Christian Horn played 50 games between the Tri-City Storm and Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL last season and scored 23 goals with 24 assists for 47 points. He was on the roster at the University of Minnesota in 2012-13, but did not play in any games. He was a member of the Minnesota state champion high school team at Benilde St. Margarets and is that school’s second leading scorer and first all time in assists. He attended three- na tional development camps in hockey. Also a standout in lacrosse, he led the team in scoring in three of his four seasons on the team and was first team All State, helping the team to two state titles. He received the Athletic Director’s Award as the best male athlete. He is the son of Janice Steinhauser and Ron Horn.

23 • Patrick Steinhauser • Fr • Forward • 5-8 • 170 • Plymouth, MN/Aberdeen (NAHL) : Patrick scored six goals and had six assists for 12 points for the Aberdeen Wings last season. He was captain, MVP, leading scorer and All Conference in high school for Benilde St. Margaret’s. He also played soccer in high school and was a honor roll student. He is the son of Mike and Suzanne Steinhauser.

24 • Brian Ward • Jr. • Forward • 6-1• 202 • Haverhill, MA • Tri-City (USHL) • Assistant Captain Brian Ward began his Saint career as a sophomore after starting his collegiate career at Dartmouth. He was unable to play for the Big Green due to injury and played for the Tri-City Storm of the USHL in 2012-13. He scored 22 goals and had 32 assists in 42 games and was plus-10 in the plus/minus ratings for the Storm. He attended Governor’s Academy where he also played lacrosse and football. He is the son of Robert and Mary Ward. 2013-14: Brian Ward had an impressive debut for the Saints, scoring a goal in each game including the game-winner in Satur- day’s 5-2 victory. over Maine. Had a point in each of the first four games and started his career with a three game goal streak. Set up the game winner with his second assist against Dartmouth. He finished the year with eight goals and nine assists for 17 points which included two power play goals. He had three points, all on assists, in the playoffs and scored in four of his last five. 25 • Chris Martin • Sr. • Forward • 6-1 • 198 • Ottawa, ONT • Indiana (USHL) Chris Martin joined the Saint program after playing junior hockey for the Indiana Ice in the USHL, helping his team to a third place finish in the Eastern Division. He scored 12 goals and had 11 assists and was plus-five in 53 games, scoring three power play goals and two short handed goals along with a game winner. He had six goals and four assists in 40 games with the Ice in 2009-10. A physical player with good speed and a hard shot, he has the ability to play either forward or defense. 2011-12: The Saint nominee for ECAC Rookie of the Year, Chris Martin finished his first collegiate season with 10 goals and 16 assists for 26 points, good for third on the team in scoring. He had three power play goals among his 10 and had a pair of assists on game-winning goals, the home win over Quinnipiac and a home win against Princeton. He had nine power play points with three goals and six assists and tied for second overall among all ECAC rookies in scoring.He was ECAC Rookie of the Week Nov. 22 after scoring two goals against Harvard. 2012-13: While he did not quite reach his rookie season scoring totals, Chris Martin had a solid sophomore season for the Saints with seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points in 38 games. He scored the game winner in a 3-2 win against Brown at home and assist- ed on three others...at Harvard, against Union at home and against Colgate in the first round of the playoffs, earning his 10th career playoff point. 2013-14: Turned in a solid series against Maine to open the season, putting five shots on goal in the two games. Had his first points of the year with two assists vs. Northeastern. Had a goal and an assist at Harvard. Played both forward and defense for the Saints through much of the season and finished the year with two goals and 13 assists. 27 • Gunnar Hughes • Sr. • Forward • 6-1 • 200 • Westwood, MA • Waterloo (USHL) • Captain The brother of Saint All America defenseman George Hughes, Gunnar cameto the Saint program after spending his final junior season playing for the Waterloo Blackhawks in the USHL. Gunnar had 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points in 57 games for the Blackhawks, scoring five shorthanded goals and a pair of game winners. He was the Rookie of the Year for the Blackhawks.Gunnar attended the Salisbury School and intends to major in economics at St. Lawrence. 2011-12: Gunnar had a solid rookie campaign for the Saints, playing in 34 of 36 games and scoring four goals to go with six assists. Two of his four goals were game winners...the home victory over Harvard and in game one against Minnesota State. The Harvard goal was his first colleigate goal. He played in 32 straight after sitting out the second weekend of the year. He had a trio of two point games. 2012-13: An assistant captain for the Saints as a junior, Gunnar is coming off a strong sophomore season in which he was the sixth leading scorer with 23 points on seven goals and 16 assists. He scored two game winners and assisted on three others and had two power play goals and three assists. The Saints were 6-1-0 in the seven games in which he scored a goal and he scored points in 19 of 38 appearances. 2013-14: Gunnar earned his first point of the season with an assist on Brian Ward’s game winner in game two against Maine. He had his first multi- point game with two assists in game of the Ferris series. Had a three point night with two goals and an assist at Dartmouth and scored the eventual game winner. 29 • Kyle MacDonald • Jr. • Goaltender • 6-0 • 175 • Hanover, MA • Bay State (EJHL) The Boston Herald Goalie of the Year and a three-time Catholic Conference All Star while playing at Xaverian Brothers High School, Kyle MacDonald also played junior hockey for the Bay State Breakers in the EJHL. While he was limited to five games by injury in his final junior season, compiling a 2.59 goals against average and a .919 save percentage, he had a 2.63 goals against average, a .927 save percentage and went 10-7-1 in 20 games in 2010-11 for the Breakers. He led his high school team to three Super 8 appear- ances, the first in school history, was was captain of the Eastern Massachusetts champion baseball team as a senior. He is the son of Andy and Mary Beth MacDonald. 2012-13: Kyle MacDonald played in three games in a backup role as a rookie and will push for more playing time in his sophomore season. He had a 4.45 goals against average in 40:13 of ice time and had a .769 save percent- age. He made his debut in the second period against Vermont, allowing a goal on ten shots and also saw action in a game at RPI and against Yale in the quarterfinals. 2013-14. He was 12-9 in 24 appearances for Springfield in 2011-12 with a 2.75 goals against average. He was a 2013 NAHL Top Prospect invitee. The son of Erica Parks, he was a honors student in high school. 2013-14: Made his first collegiate appearance in relief in game two of the Ferris State game. Won his first collegiate start with a 20 save effort in game two against Northeastern. Improved to 2-0 on the season with a win in game one of the RIT series. He made 18 saves on 22 shots in the Dec. 14 game against Vermont. Played in seven games overall with a 2.99 goals against average and a .861 save percentage to go with a 2-1-0 record. 55 • Justin Bruckel • Sr. • Forward • 5-11 • 185 • Geneseo, NY • New Jersey (EJHL) Justin Bruckel scored 22 goals and had 30 assists for 52 points for the division champion New Jersey Hitmen of the EJHL in his final junior season, scoring six power play goals, two shorthanders and four game winners. A native of Geneseo, NY and an outstanding athlete, he attended Manlius-Pebble Hill School and intends to major in economics at St. Lawrence.2011-12: Justin played in 19 games for the Saints as a rookie and recorded four assists. His first collegiate point came at Michigan and he had his first collegiate multi-point game with a pair of assists in a home win over Harvard.
